The Great Thanksgiving Listen

Caleb Interviews his Grandma, Linda

I interviewed my grandma on Sunday, November 26th in Eugene, Oregon. My grandma was the interviewee and I was the interviewer. I selected her for this interview because he thought she could have good stories. Also, I thought that she would be willing to do this because she has free time on her hands. The interview roughly lasted around 20 minutes. It had 16 questions that were asked. A lot was shared throughout the interview, one of the main points was traveling. First, Linda traveled from Eugene, Oregon to Spain. Then, she traveled back to Eugene. Her dad also was the one to teach her gardening. That was also a big topic of this interview and how she still does it today.

Gardening

This is a picture that represents gardening. It plays an important role in my grandma’s life and in the interview. Around 5 minutes of the interview was about gardening.

Excerpt from the Interview

Q3: Where did you grow up and what was your childhood like?

A3:  I grew up in Eugene. I had a happy childhood with all of my neighborhood friends. We played a lot of the classic games late at night until it got dark. Also, we did not have tv until I was 16 so there wasn’t a lot of technology back then.

Q4: Did you like going to school? What was good about it?

A4: Yes, I loved going to school because it was very fun and I worked hard to get good grades. One time I begged my PE teacher to give me a B because I was getting picked on for having straight A’s. I cried because she did not give it to me.

Q11: Tell me about your parents.

A11: My parents we older when they had me. They moved from San Diego to my birthplace, Veneta. My dad was a chicken farmer, he built our house and had a whole house just for the chickens. When I was 6 years old they sold that house and moved to a subdivision in the bethel area. My mom made him do that because of the schools. They were quiet, non-social, non-drinkers, non-smokers, and always made food. I got my love for gardening from my father who also loved it.

Summary

Overall, I enjoyed and learned a lot through this assignment. My grandma was excited that she could tell some of her stories to me. I learned stories that I never knew and that were very impactful on my life. One surprising thing I learned was that my grandma’s brother died from cancer. It was very sad and I never knew that. The interview lasted around 20 minutes, it wasn’t too short nor to long. Lastly, I think the sad memory really hit a spot in my grandma because all of a sudden her mood went down. However, I think she had a good time and I would do this again with other family members.
