How To Wash Dishes By Hand

Washing all dishes, glassware, pots, pans, etc is very important.  We do not want to spread germs, bacteria, and other harmful microbes in a community kitchen.  We want to leave clean dishes for the next cooking classes.

Please follow the following tips to properly clean dishes by hand.

Tools Needed:

  • Dish detergent
  • Dishpan or clean sink
  • Sponge or Towel

Steps:

  • Put detergent in a clean sink or dishpan.  Note: You do not need very much detergent.  Use about a tablespoon.

  • Add Hot Water to the clean sink or dishpan (fill to halfway).  Use water as hot as you can stand it.  You can move your hand around to make suds.

  • Scrape food off your dirty dishes, pans, etc into trash before putting dishes in the dishpan
  • Using a clean dishrag or sponge, wash each piece on both sides.  Wash one at a time in this order:
    • Glasses
    • Silverware
    • Plates and Small Dishes
    • Pots and Pans
  • When washing an item, first emerge the item in the soapy water and wash with the dishrag or sponge.  Make sure you wash both sides of the item and the rim of the item

  • If you have a lot of dishes and pans, you might have to change your water.  Dirty cold water will not clean dishes.
