No Connections on Thursday, December 12, 2013

All 4J Schools are closed on Thursday, December 12, 2013.  The snow is melting during the day then it is freezing at night, which is leading to dangerous road conditions.

4J is hopeful the weather will start to take a turn for the better, and we will be open tomorrow.  Hopefully we will be.

Woo Hoo! We Are Back!

IMG_2659I hope everyone had a happy and restful Thanksgiving Break.  I had a great Thanksgiving and now I am excited and ready to be back in Connections this week!  We have 3 more weeks to finish out the Fall Term, and they are going to be electrifying!  Good news!  We almost have a full week of Connections this week.  All seminars, advocates, tutorials and work crews will take place as scheduled on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday afternoon and Friday.  Connections activities and events are canceled between 9 am and 12:30 pm on Thursday, December 5, 2013 due to Staff Professional Development.  Let’s have a strong finish to the fall term!

You know what they say about Oregon… If you don’t like the weather, wait 5 minutes.  Rumor has it that there are some weather reports that are predicting snow.  In case of snow: Connections is part of the Eugene 4J school district.  If 4J is open, Connections is open.  If 4J is closed, Connections is closed.  The 4J web site (www.4j.lane.edu) will have the latest information on school closures.  I will post a message on this website if we are delayed or closed for the day.

In case of a 1 hour delay: All 9 am seminars and advocates will be canceled.  We will have a regular schedule starting at 10 am.

In case of a 2 hour delay: All 9 am and 10 am seminars and advocates will be canceled.  We will have a regular schedule starting at 11 am.

Sometimes Lane Community College will be closed and 4J will be open.  In that case, Connections will be open. If you have classes or advocates that take place at LCC, please talk to your teacher about what to do if LCC is closed.

And, if you have any questions, you can always call me at (541) 912-3618.  If you choose to text me, please leave your name and a phone number where I can call you.  My red phone will not allow me to respond to texts in a timely manner  (the Red phone will allow me to read them).

There’s Good News and Bad News

IMG_2646I would like to thank everyone who participated with software website testing last week.  The software manufactures enjoyed meeting you and said you had valuable feedback that will help their programs.  You made strong first impressions and they were impressed.

The good news: We have a normal week this week (November 18 to November 22).  All seminars, advocates, tutorials and work experience will take place as usual.  Your attendance is very important.  Always attend class on time.  Sometimes the unexpected happens and you will be late or absent.  Always remember to call or text your teacher when absent or late!

The bad news: All 4J schools are closed next week (November 25 to November 29).  The Register Guard has called it “No School November.”  4J schools are closed from on November 25, 26 and 27 for Furlough Days.  4J schools are closed on November 28 and 29 for Thanksgiving holiday.  Please keep in mind that Lane Community College is not a 4J school.  Lane Community College is open on November 25, 26 and 27.  If you attend LCC, you don’t want to miss your classes!

Speaking of Lane Community College…  LCC’s winter term registration is currently open.  If you are thinking of taking a LCC Winter Term credit class, you can now register for winter term classes.  I would like to encourage you to attend LCC while you have Connections Support.  We can be great advocates for you as you make the transition to College Credit Classes. If you have not yet taken the LCC placement exam, please make an appointment with LCC Disability Resources (Building 1) and see if you are eligible for any accommodations.  Talk to your advocate if you have any questions!

Do You Know When It Is Appropriate To Stay Home From School and/or Work?

IMG_2649Being reliable is important.  You need to follow through on your commitments.  In a perfect world, everyone would always attend school each day.  And, in a perfect world, no one would ever miss a day of work.  In the real world, people do have to miss school or work from time to time.  The students of Is It A Medical Emergency?  generated a list of times you should stay home from school or word due to illness.  Here is their list (in no particular order):

1. If you are vomiting or having diarrhea

2. If you have a fever over 100 degrees

3. If you have head lice

4. If you have pink eye

5. If you have bronchitis

6. If you have pneumonia

7. If you have a medical condition that requires you to be in the hospital

Can you add to this list?  Please join Is It A Medical Emergency? each Monday at 11 am or Wednesdays at 1:30 pm.  The above reasons are all outstanding reasons to miss school or work.  But remember, no matter how sick you are, you still need to contact your teacher or supervisor to let them know that you are not coming.

I would like to thank everyone that attended Alumni Afternoon!  It was an electrifyingevent, and a good time was had by all!  Please look for the next Alumni Event coming winter term!
