Scat by Carl Hiassen

Scat is the excrement left behind by animals, in this story by a panther. For Hiassen, it is also what is left after a wild area in Florida has been exploited for its resources. I think Hiassen loves Florida, and is saddened by the destruction of its environment. It is interesting that Hiaasen is using young adult novels to explore this theme. Hoot, Flush, and Scat are all tales of the destruction of Florida’s environment by dishonest people.

If you enjoyed Hoot and Flush you will love Scat. The story contains great characters, my favorite being the substitute teacher who takes over the Science teacher’s classroom after she disappears. Scat references one of my favorite books by one of my favorite authors, The Monkey Wrench Gang by Edward Abbey. I hope Hiaasen continues to carry on the tradition.
