A boy who runs away from home and finds himself living in a tree. He has survival skills with food, shelter and water and has a pet hawk. He eats acorn pancakes and berries. He goes to the library often and is 12 years old.

This book is about a juvenile delinquent named Cole who bashes Peter’s head into the curb and gets sent to an island for his punishment. He burns down his shelter and rebuilds it. He gets another chance.

Uprising by Margaret Haddix

The main characters are Bella, Letta and Jane. The plot is about how three young girls deal with the difficult life of being on their own and fighting against their boss. The bosses of factories take total advantage of them and a small group fights back. In the end, only one survives from the fire.

Gary Paulsen writes a book about his experience about the wilderness.. He trains his dogs to run the Iditarod. A lot of weird things happen along the way. In the end, he doesn’t win but finishes the race.

World Made by Hand by James Kunstler

This story takes place in the near future after nuclear bombs have devastated Los Angeles and Washington, DC. The story details the ways life changes for the residents of a small town in Upstate New York, after the explosions curtail the use of machines. The story is both disturbing and inspirational as people learn to live in a world made by hand.

Brian’s Winter by Gary Paulsen

The characters are Brian and the wild, life-like animals. The plot was that he got stranded after a plane crash in the woods. He had to find out how to live and survive. The conflict is he is trying to find people or somebody that can take him home to his family.
