Hi Everyone,

Welcome back and here’s the first edition my weekly announcements for the year.

Please be sure to read my weekly announcements by the end of Tuesday each week (that is when there’s school on Monday, unlike this week). One of my goals with the weekly announcements is communicate informational items all at once, instead of taking up time at a staff meeting or flooding people with multiple emails throughout the week.

Eight items of note for this week:

• Breakfast Burrito Order & Wednesday Welcome Back Breakfast – First things first, if you haven’t already given Diane or Joanne your breakfast burrito order for Wednesday’s Welcome Back Breakfast, be sure to do so before 10:00 AM, Tuesday morning. See you all Wednesday at 8:00 in the cafeteria for our welcome back gathering!
• 4J Back-to-School Event at South Eugene High School Auditorium – The keynote speaker this year will be our new superintendent, Dr. Sheldon (Shelley) Berman, who will share his perspective on the evolving changes in teaching and learning for Eugene and schools across the country. Personally speaking, I know I haven’t always attended these, but I got a preview of Shelley’s presentation and am really excited about the direction he wants to take our school district. Every 4J employee is encouraged to attend. Breakfast and social time 7:30-8:30 and the speakers begin at 8:30 in the auditorium.
• Employee Work Year Calendars – If you have questions about your work year calendar, 4J has posted a convenient website with work year calendars for all employee groups.
• Mandatory Policy Review for all Staff – All staff must review the district policies under section 1 of the attached document and return the acknowledgment form (which you will get at the staff meeting) to me no later than September 30th.
• Lane County Audubon Society Free Grades 3-5 Curriculum – In it’s 28th year, Audubon Adventure is presenting “Feathers, Fur, Fins and You” for the 2011-2012 school year. The four topics in this program will cover Pollinators, Wild Alaska, Rivers of Life and Actions for Planet Earth – ways that young people can make a contribution to conservation in their own community. This resource will bring science to life in the classroom and can be used across the curriculum. The Audubon Adventures Classroom Resource Kit includes Nature News for Kids: 32 copies each of 4 issues, Classroom Resource Manual for Teachers, and Full-color posters and brochures. For more information, you may visit their website. If you’re interested, you can contact Joyce Trawle at jtrawle@comcast.net or (541) 515 6244.
• EEF Grants Due October 9th – If anyone wants to get a jump on EEF grants, attached is the this year’s application form. One new twist to the grants this year is that we have the option of combining grants, where we could submit one $5,000 grant instead of two $2,000 and two $500 grants. However, I’m not sure that’s a good idea, but thought I’d share this new option. If we did do this, we’d need a A++ grant idea. The grants are due to EEF October 9th, but they’ll actually need to be ready to be shared at Site Council before then, where we will rank order the grants we are submitting.
• Furlough Day, Friday, September 2nd – Friday, September 2 will be a furlough day for 4J staff. Employees should not report to work this day.
• Inservice week Schedule – With the exception of the attached Back-to-School 4J Inservice Schedule and the furlough day this Friday, below are the same dates that were in my back-to-school letter, but I thought it couldn’t hurt to send these out one more time.
