Hi Everyone,

Five items of note for this week:

• Sustainable Budget Meeting – The school district is holding regional meetings later this month regarding next year’s budget and how best to go about creating a sustainable budget, knowing that we are not going to be able to fund all programs as we have in the past. The district is allowing two staff members and two parents from each school to attend. The north region meeting will be on Monday, Oct. 25 7-9 p.m. at the Kelly Middle School library. Please let me know if you’d like to be one of the two staff reps at this meeting.
• New State OAKS Math Cut Score – The math achievement standards (cut scores), will likely change in the next couple of months to reflect the current math standards – the test has caught up with the standards change, and the new scores will be effective for all of this school year’s OAKS Math testing. The new recommended cut scores (point increases in parentheses) that will go to the State Board on 10/28 are the following:

⁃ 3rd – 212 (+7)
⁃ 4th – 219 (+7)
⁃ 5th – 225 (+7)

• IIPM Data Team Meetings to Resume – IIPM meetings will resume next week on Thursday, October 21st. See the Silver Lea Zimbra calendar for your grade level’s dates. We’ll be starting with 1st grade and work our way up the grade levels, ending with Kindergarten.
• Mini Grants Available – A local orthodontist is offering mini grants for things such as funding for fields trips, buses for field trips, supplies for special projects or units, t-shirts for events or fundraisers, books for libraries or classrooms, and so on. They don’t have a website, but did sent me a paper application, so let me know if you’d like an application.
• TED.com Video on Multiple Perspectives – After school one day, you should listen to this terrific video from TED.com. Novelist Chimamanda Adichie tells the story of how she found her authentic cultural voice – and warns that if we hear only a single story about another person or country, we risk a critical misunderstanding. Have a fab week, everyone!
