Hi Everyone,

There have been some baby announcements made at each school this past week, but I’m not sure news has fully traveled between staffs, so I wanted to congratulate Ashley and Angie on their forthcoming bundles of joy (and that’s bundles plural for Ashley who is expecting twins). I can now speak from experience and say it’s challenging and wonderful all at the same time.

Seven items of note for this week:

• Allan on Paternity Leave this Week (plus a Gracie visit) – After much vacillation, I’ve decide to take just this week off for my paternity leave and will be back on Monday the 16th. Carolynne Hopkins has ended up not being available to sub for me this week, but a friend of mine, Shadiin Garicia, the assistant principal at ATA (formerly Jefferson Middle School), will be here for me Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday. Carolynne will be in for me on Friday. And most importantly, I’ll be stopping by school on Tuesday around 11:15 with Gracie for anyone needing a baby-fix.
• Technology Help Requests – With CIS re-imaging some of our computers, the MacBook 1.1 and 2.1 machines, keep in mind that Marvin will not be working on image related issues on these machines since they will soon be wiped clean. However, Marvin will still be troubleshooting and providing support for all other laptops (newer MacBooks and all iBooks). Remember to post your requests on Marvin’s clipboard here: http://www.ultraguest.com/sign/1251488737
Parent Teacher Conference Tips from NEA – I just found this website with some good tips for teachers on conducting successful parent teacher conferences. Follow the link if you are so inclined http://www.nea.org/tools/36079.htm
• EPA SunWise 2010 Poster Contest – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is inviting Oregon schools to participate to win prizes and recognition in the 2010 SunWise with SHADE Poster Contest to help raise kids awareness about sun safety. The attached flyer has detailed instructions and more information is available at http://www.epa.gov/sunwise/.
• Papers: The Movie – Lane ESD, 4j, Bethel, and the UO are partnering to bring a special movie to the Ed Center Auditorium on Thursday, November 19, 2009 at 6:30 PM. The word on this movie from other school districts around the state is that it is powerful and moving. “Papers” is the story of undocumented youth and the challenges they face as they turn 18 without legal status. See the attachment for details. Also, here is a link to the film’s website http://papersthemovie.com/
• Veteran’s Day – The Secretary of Veterans Affairs has sent us a CD-ROM of suggested activities to teach students about Veteran’s Day. Rather than everyone share one CD-ROM, I’ve posted a link on my blog to a ZIP file I created that contains of all the information on the CD.
• Building Master Calendar in Your iCal – If anyone uses iCal and would like the Google Building Master Calendar to also show up in your iCal, let me know. All you need to do is create a Google account here https://www.google.com/accounts/NewAccount and then I can give you access to the building calendar, which you can then sync with your iCal. Marvin or myself can help you with the synching of the calendars. It’s pretty simple and you only need to set it up the one time.

Have a great week, everyone!

Allan
