Hi Everyone,

Welcome to the last five day week of the school year.

Eight items of note for this week.

• Building Use Team Meeting, Wednesday, May 23rd at 7:30– We’ll be holding a Building Use Team Meeting this Wednesday at 7:30 in the Corridor library to work towards a decision around gym and cafeteria times for next year. We’re primarily deciding if we want to keep the current year’s agreement, which was a change from the past, or if we want to go back to how we’ve split the spaces in prior years. I also want to remind both staffs to do your best to use the gym and cafeteria during each schools agreed scheduled times.

• String Academy Future at YG/Corridor and Assembly June 4th, 8:45 – The Arts Umbrella Strings Academy is in danger of ending because of low enrollment this year, with 8 kids instead of the usual 15. Like most agencies, they too are making budget cuts, but I’ve managed to convince them to wait and see what our numbers look like in the Fall, so please help us promote our program to kids for next year. Even though we it’s a small group, it’s nice to be able to tell incoming families that this is an enrichment program that we offer. In the meantime, as they have done in the past, they would and would like to hold an end of the year assembly for 3rd, 4th and 5th graders on Monday, June 4th at 8:45 in the cafeteria.

• easyCBM Spring Benchmark Testing Begins This Week – Just a quick reminder that Spring Benchmark testing begins this week. Substitutes are available for teachers who would like to have someone cover their class while you test and enter scores. Also remember, if you want someone to enter scores for you, you need to have those to me by Friday, June 1st. All scores must be entered by June 8th.

• You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown Assembly – Just a reminder that North will be coming over to our school on Tuesday to give us a mini-verison of their current play, “You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown”. The assembly will be in the cafeteria from 8:45-9:10 for Corridor and 9:20-9:45 for YG. However, only 1st and 3rd grade at YG said they would like to attend, so I think we’ll combine the assemblies into one assembly at 8:45 unless I hear from more YG classes by the end of Monday.

• Fire Drill, Thursday, May 24th – We’ll be holding our May fire drill this week on Thursday, May 24th at 1:00. Only one more drill to go before the summer!

• Oregon Reading Council Workshops – Karen Antikajian (A former 4J reading guru) asked principals to share some workshops being offered by the Oregon Reading Council this summer and next school year. Please see the attached email and flyer for details.

• How teachers can use “The Hunger Games” in science lessons – Probably only for older grades, but the writers of this article post suggest a lesson in which students use “The Hunger Games” to learn about genetically engineered organisms. To begin, students should discuss the hybrid bird — the jabberjay — featured in the popular book series and film. Students then should work in groups to study and present their research on “do it yourself” biology and other topics. Could be a fun lesson if there are a lot of kids in your class familiar with the books or movie.

• Video: Sir Ken Robinson, what’s in the school of your dreams? – Watch as four student reporters hand Sir Ken Robinson a “blank check” and say: Design a learning place of your dreams. It’s a three-part video series — and definitely do watch through to Part 3, where things get a little bit silly.

Fourteen and a half more kid days! Have a great week, everyone!
