School Store - Harford Technical High School

Welcome to the School Store! In this class, you will experience running a small business. We practice using a real cash register, making real transactions, keeping inventory, checking inventory, all the while being polite to our customers and keeping a positive attitude.

Friday, March 4

Let’s count the money in the register today. Let’s make that a priority! We only have two classes left, and this class will not be offered in the Spring. Let’s begin counting our cash, and see if we’ve made a profit! Unfortunately, we have to take a loss on those chips. 😉

Valentines Day Chocolate free with purchase! This will last the whole week of Valentines Day.

Let’s make a sign advertising a free yummy Valentines Day chocolate with every purchase from the Bailey Cove School Store.

Discussion Topics for today:

What does “First Impression” mean? How important is it for your customers to have a good first impression? How do they feel when they enter the store? Is the store clean? Is it bright? Dark? What does it smell like? All of these things can make a customer decide to come back, or to NEVER come back! Loss of customers = loss of business = store closed.

How can music encourage customers, or make their experience in the store worse? Would you play something upbeat? Something that puts a smile on your customers face? Would you play heavy metal? Opera? What sort of music do you like when you are shopping?

Greeting your customers! Why is this important? If you greet your customers with a smile and welcome them in, how do you think this makes them feel? What if your customer is completely ignored? Examples: Cashier is not busy, but on their phone. You walk in, and are completely ignored. Remember: Your customer is there to BUY items and give you business!

Make small talk. When your customer comes to you to pay, should you talk to them? “Hey! How’s your day going?” “It sure is a nice day outside, do you have any plans for the rest of your day?”  This shows the customer that you care that they are there.

Body language. Not every customer will want to talk. Use your instincts. If a customer is chatty, feel free to chat back. If you try to talk to a customer, but are largely ignored, don’t try to force a conversation.

Eye contact. What does good eye contact look like? Discuss eye contact upon entering the store, and while checking out. Remember, it does not feel good to be ignored. There are LOTS of other places a customer could go if they don’t feel they are treated well when in your store.

Open the store.

Practice! Remember positive attitude.

Friday, February 4

This is our first class! We had the last two Fridays off. We have some inventory left from the Fall term. Today, we will talk about what to do with it. Is it expired? Should we toss it? Should we start fresh?

What items do we want to sell for Winter term? Keep in mind the type of weather we have right now and what might be enticing to customers during the cold weather!

Brainstorm ideas for what products we want to sell.

Look up products. Explore different brands and prices and consider what food items have a long shelf life. Bananas didn’t work out too well Fall term!

Open the store and physically inspect old inventory.

Practice with the cash register!
