Student Classroom Participation Expectations

Here are some reminders for when you participate in class:

Participate, don’t dominate:

–       Stay on topic

–        Keep comments and questions brief (about 5 seconds or less)

–       Let other people participate (let other people answer questions first)

When you are given feedback:

–       Listen

–       Try to do what is asked

–       Take a break if you get frustrated

When problems happen:

–       When you are asked by an adult to leave a room, leave

–       Take space and get calm

–       Complete a problem solving sheet if you are asked to leave

–       Problem solve with an adult once you are finished

Student Behavior Expectations

We will update this after week one, as students will have input in what expectations we’ll have in classes.

Agreed upon in first week seminars:

RESPECT! Various great ideas during discussions first 2 weeks of Connections (see teachers for specifics for each class, as it varies for when you’re in a seminar vs out in the community).  Act maturely and as if you’re representing yourself and wanting to make it a safe & fun learning environment for you and your peers. Below were some of the identified areas on student expectation when in Connections.

Cellphone – put away and used only if asked to do so by teacher, and on breaks (this is a good habit for when you take College classes or work at jobsite).

Hand-raise: as directed by teacher (if many students in a class it may be needed, at other times not).

Breaks/downtime: please excuse yourself at any time to go use the restroom (quietly leave and get back to your seat). And when on lunch break keep voice volume down as teacher/students are often in meetings (and our walls are thin).

At connections you’re expected to be independent during downtime (e.g. in between classes). You will need to find a place/space in the community to wait between classes. Students can’t “wait around” at Connections building if not participating in classes.

Participate: Connections is voluntary program, but if you are in class you’re expected to participate the best you can. If you need extra breaks that can be arranged, but please participate when you’re in the class.

Room clear routines    Announced by teacher and staff only.

Do not try to intervene – it’s the teachers responsibility to de-escalate the situation.

If teacher  announces that “we’ll do a room clear”:

Stand up

Calm body and voice

No running but move fast

Leave belongings in the classroom – but grab your coat if you can.

Exit through the door closest (or as directed by teacher).

Keep moving to designated meet up place (parking lot). Do not stand outside and look in window.

Time- if it appears the need to stay out for a longer period of time and the weather is harsh we will walk to the market or go to another location as per teacher directive.

Additionally:  we also follow all 4J decided policies and all staff are mandatory reporters, see link below (smoking/vaping/weapons/threats/bullying etc.):

Old version:

Student Behavior Expectations

Each student will try his or her hardest to edit their comments to be constructive, positive, and refrain from negative comments.

All students will try to problem solve on their own first; if they can not come to a solution, they will remove themselves from the situation and communicate their issue with Connections Staff.

All students will genuinely treat all staff and students with respect. This includes following rules and policies (not looking for loopholes in rules). Students will be given a chance to rewind and correct his or her behavior if they do not treat others respectfully.

If students cannot remain respectful or engages in bullying behavior they will be asked to go home for the day.

Mark your planner.  Here are some important dates for the end of the school year:

Join Jasmin’s Exercise Class: Friday 9 am

IMG_2872Last week, your challenge was to get at least 150 minutes of exercise each week.  Jasmin has now begun an exercise class on Friday’s at 9 am, and it is awesome!  Meet in the green room each Friday at 9 am to get 45 minutes of exercise!  You will feel great and it will energize you for the day.  You might even notice that you don’t need that energy drink anymore!

We have a full week of school this week!  Originally, Thursday April 17 and Friday April 18 were scheduled to be no school days/furlough days.  This has changed!  Thursday, April 17 and Friday, April 18 are now school days! 4J Staff took furlough days during the heavy snowstorms in December.  All Connections’ advocates, seminars, tutorials and work crews will take place on Thursday and Friday this week.

Connections Challenge: Get Outside And Exercise!

IMG_2864Did you know that the Center for Disease Control recommends that you get at least 150 minutes of aerobic exercise per week?  You don’t have to do 150 minutes all at once… just exercise 3 times a day for 10 minutes at a time.  What is aerobic exercise you ask?  Aerobic exercise (also called cardio) is anything that can make your heart beat faster or make you breath heavier.  It could be going on a brisk walk, walking up stairs, riding your bike, dancing, etc.  The forecast is calling for nice days in Eugene… get outside and have some fun!  The forecast is also calling for rain.  Still, go outside and exercise, don’t let rain stop you!  For more information join Walk And Roll on Mondays at 12:30 pm at the New Downtown LCC.  The Center for Disease Control also has a fantastic web site: http://www.cdc.gov/physicalactivity/everyone/guidelines/adults.html

We have had a great start to our Spring Term.  Attendance has been great, enthusiasm has been off the charts!  It has been fun.  We realize your spring schedule might not be perfect, you might need to add and/or drop some classes.  If you need to add or drop, please follow the following procedure:

1. Pick up an add drop form in the student lounge

2. Write the name of the class you want to add or drop

3. Ask the class’ instructor to sign form

4. Schedule a meeting with your case manager.  You will create an action plan with your case manager.
