Hi Everyone,

My parental leave has come to an end and I’ll be back to school this week. A big thank you to everyone and especially to Carolynne for filling in for me during my absence. I’m really glad I took these three weeks off since it’s a time that I could never get back, but I want to again thank everyone for being so understanding while I took this time off.

Five items of note for this week.

• Summer School Title 1 Teaching Positions – The principal of the Title 1 summer school has asked principals to pass along to teachers that there will be 5 openings for Summer School teaching positions posted on EdZapp this Wednesday.

• IIPM Data Team Meeting Next Week – Not this week, but next week will be our final IIPM Data Team Meeting of the year. On Thursday, May 3rd, subs will be coming to classroom at the times below, so plan accordingly for them. I’ll be sending an email to grade levels later this week about the students you are monitoring and what to bring to the meeting. Let me know if you have any questions.

• 2012 Public Works Day, May 17th – I’ve sent this out before, but the city of Eugene is sending out one final call for teachers to register for this event. See the attached letter for details and if your interested, the attached is the registration form. You can also register online.

• Earth Day Resources – It may be a bit late to send this out since Earth Day is on Monday, but here are a couple links to earth day actives from NEA and also from Scholastic. And if you want a quick cool Earth Day video to show your class, here is a NASA video that features a series of time lapse sequences photographed from the International Space Station where you can see auroras and amazing lightning displays from across the globe.

• Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day, Thursday, April 26th – As much as I’m not a fan of Take Your Daughter and Sons to Work Day being in the middle of the school year, I though I’d give everyone a reminder that this is happening on Thursday and not to be surprised is more students than usual are absent. I’m not sure if you want to announce it to your class or not, but if you do, here’s a link to some activities you can have the kids do while they are out of school.

• How to survive and thrive during the last days of the school year – Dr. Danielle Moss Lee, president and CEO at Harlem Educational Activities Fund, in this blog post offers some practical tips for teachers on navigating the last 40 days of the school year. She suggests teachers work to support each other and rely on the experience of their veteran colleagues, take time to pursue interests that inspire them outside of the classroom, encourage deeper learning for students and choose creative field trips to breathe new life into lessons.

Have a great week, everyone!
