Week of February 25, 2019

February 25th, 2019

Hi everyone,

As I write this, I see a rain snow mix outside.  It is very possible that there will be a now day tomorrow since there are 5 inches expected in Eugene overnight.  We will see what the transportation department and Superintendent’s office decide to do about the weather!  This week we have many things popping, ESSA, Equity Meeting, PLCs, and North DLI Immersion observations too.  Please check the schedule below for the most up to date information.

• Classified Appreciation week is coming!  March 4 through 8th is Classified Appreciation week.  We will be celebrating the classified staff all that week with some special gifts and appreciation.  We absolutely love our classified staff and they make our school go.  Friday, March 8th bring a little less lunch as our certified staff will be bringing something special for your meal.

• Friday Early Release PD – This Friday’s Early Release PD is a Reading Progress Monitoring meeting. Principals have not been given the plan for this meeting yet, but I expect we’ll get some direction at Tuesday’s elementary principals’ meeting, so stay tuned.

• Student Teacher Celebration– 4J is doing something new this year. HR is hosting a Student Teacher CelebrationMarch 4th at the Ed Center Auditorium, 4:00-5:00. Please, share the above linked flyer with your student teachers. If you know you will have a student teacher this spring, they are also invited and you are welcome to join the event as well. Thank you in advance for helping spread the word.

• Bringing the Science of Learning Into Classrooms (it’s about relationships)– Years of research prompted a group of scientists to ask whether we should rethink the way we do school. “The science says to us that, in fact, the way the brain functions and grows, it needs safety, it needs warmth, it actually even needs hugs,” explains Stanford professor Linda Darling-Hammond. “We actually learn in a state of positive emotion much more effectively than we can learn in a state of negative emotion. That has huge implications for what we do in schools.” According to Darling-Hammond, there are a few ways school can shift to better align with these insights. See this Edutopia Article for details on the importance of building strong, long-lasting relationships with students, understanding where each student is developmentally to scaffold instruction, and integrate practices that explicitly address belonging and safety.

• Classified Evaluations Due 3/31– HR has moved up the due date for principals to finish classified evaluations from the end of the school year to to March 31st. I will be meeting with classified staff to give evaluations much earlier this year. Week of February 11, 2019

February 10th, 2019

Hello Shining Stars,

Last week it was so encouraging to see our community come together to celebrate volunteer Don Mario’s 75th birthday. I know he was especially hearted by all the birthday wishes. We are so fortunate to have such a dedicated and caring volunteer  in our community.  And the way we celebrated his birthday says a lot about our kind and caring school.

Image may contain: 1 person, smiling, standing

Here are some of the notes for the week:

• Parent Group Meeting this Week – We meet thisTuesday at 6:00 in the library will be the February Parent Group meeting, so if you’re able to volunteer your time to come, I know parents appreciating seeing staff at the meeting. Hope to see you there! Also, Jaimee Massie and Edith Gomez will be presenting on math to families and it is great to hear what parents are thinking in this type of session.

•  Site Council –Next week I will update the Site Council on the ESSA  supports and we will review some of the data in the data dive so they are aware of the process.  If you want to know more about our data, please join us in the library at 4:45 Tuesday.

• Playground Equipment – It is time to order some additional balls to replace lost and damaged balls. Recess staff and teachers will let Joel know what needs to be ordered. Joel will order new soft Frisbees for each grade level. We’ll also see if we can find a more rugged tetherball that wont’ break right away, which will hopefully give student another option at recess.  Craig will see if he can find a temporary tether ball equipment system so we can add another one for the students.

• Friday Early Release PD – This Friday’s Early Release PD was cancelled to compensate for the lost hour of prep on Grading Day, Friday, February 1st. Enjoy!

 • Staffing Information Day is February 19th. – I will hold a small stand up meeting on February 20 in the morning so staff are aware of the staffing allocations the morning of February 20th.  I will hold this in the library so you can stop by and be well informed.  Please come to be informed.  Also, I appreciated all the feedback on staffing next year.  We received 23 responses which is the most information I have collected at our school.  There is still time to respond if you want to.  2019-2020 Staffing Survey- El Camino del RíoStaffing Survey Link

Teacher Observations of the Kelly and North Program is 2/27 and More. – Earlier this week Juan sent out the invitation to the Immersion Task force teachers to sign up for a full day of observation of the North El Camino Program.  This is coming up.  Get your sub today. February 27th is the date. Use the code Immersion Task Force.   Also, you will need a half day for the Curriculum Mapping day on February 20th to work on this project for our school strand k-12 curriculum alignment.

Here are some important dates and times to be aware of:

Week of February 4, 2019

February 3rd, 2019

Dear Shining Stars,

This weekend I was fortunate to go to the OALA conference to learn and celebrate 15 years of the OALA organization.  Oregon Association of Latinx Administrators has been a round long enough to celebrate it’s quinceñera! This event featured several Latinx leaders who I look up to.  In fact, Carmen Urbina, a champion of equity in Oregon was honored for her work at various levels across the state.  It was so encouraging to see her recognized for the work she has done for all students across the state, but especially for our students in 4j.

Here are some of the major events of the week and resources:

• Skillful Teaching Module PD Offering– Teachers, I put this PD opportunity at the top of my announcements because it’s one that I’ll personally vouch for. As one of the eight schools 4J is working with on ESSA improvement, El Camino del Río has been given sub days for interested teachers to attend the linked Skillful Teaching Modules(AKA RBT and Jon Saphier) at the LaneESD. Some sessions start as soon as next week and other don’t start until May. Please take a look at the offerings and let me know if you’re interested in any of modules or if you have any questions.

• Hazardous Weather Conditions Reminder & Change – Downtown already sent everyone the updated 2018–19 Hazardous Weather Conditions Information, but I wanted to make sure everyone noted this information since SNOW!is in the forecast. Also note a change from last year, that if there is a 2-hour delay it will not alter dismissal times, even if it happens on an early release Friday.

• Friday Early Release PD– For classroom teachers, this Friday is designated for Math PLC. I’ll do a quick review of the process for teams to record their work, but a majority of the time will be dedicated for teams to work together. For licensed interventionists (Title and SPED), this is a virtual PLC meeting date, so watch for details that should come from Marlee Litten.

• Second Step Check-In – Downtown asked principals to check in with teachers if you have any needs regarding Second Step posters or materials. Also remember that videos, picture cards (the images, not the lessons) are available on the Second Step Teacher Dashboard. Let me know if you need any additional materials or if you’d like me to scan your grade level materials.

• Report Card Reminders– Hopefully teachers are liking the New Shorter Report Card. Three report card notes:

• No Report Cards Needed for Cumulative  files–  I just found that if teachers were wondering, you DO NOT need to print a copy of winter report cards to go into Cumulative files. MariCarmen will do this for any students who move, but a copy will need to go into Cumulative files at the end of the school year.

• Report Cards Send Home Friday– All of 4J is sending report cards home this Friday, so make sure they are ready to go home this Friday. Inform your families via ClassDojo that they are coming or newsletter.

• OSAS Science Resources– Heidi Rebar, our district science TOSA, shared this OSAS Science Google Drivethat has some OSAS Science Scavenger Hunt resources for teachers. Anyone with the link should be able to view.

• February is Black History Month– We know that black history didn’t begin or end with slavery. Yet the arrival of the first Africans in the colonies is the first most students learn of black history. Teach the full range of black humanity and experiences year-round. Look for opportunities across all areas of curricula, including math, science, social studies and English language arts. Follow these links to Teaching Tolerance, Readworks, WeAreTeachers, and NEAto learn more about how you can take a comprehensive approach to history. It is ok to use these beyond February too!

And do not forget the great resource that Erin Reckers sent out earlier this week.  Black Lives Matter at School. There are so many great resources in this link.  Please check it out here and use it.  Remember that we should be repeating our  Racism Free Zone lessons this month in since we see ourselves as an RFZ school.
