•DAPA and DACA Event this week at Springfield HS- Beatriz Hernandez, the current Immigration Outreach and Education Specialist at Centro Latino Americano has begun to share events with us.  She  provided us with with information regarding an event happening next week geared towards the Latino community in Lane County. On Thursday, December 17th, from 6:30pm-7:30pm, Centro Latino Americano  will be holding an educational workshop regarding the topics of DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) and DAPA (Deferred Action for Parents of Americans) at Springfield High School. The Centro mission is to inform the community of these immigration processes while providing accurate information from a central location.  Springfield Workshop Flyer

• 5th Annual 4J Digital Learning Day –Technology Dept is  looking for student presenters! Click Here to reserve a space for your school! The 4J Digital Learning Day Student Showcase  is coming in February. It will be Wednesday, February 17th, 2016 from 4:00-6:00 p.m. at the Ed Center Auditorium (200 N. Monroe St., Eugene, OR) Sign up to Present at this year’s Digital Learning Day!
• 2016-2017 EEF Grant Application Changes – This is quite a ways off, but principals and secretaries received and email from EEF saying they are changing their application process for next school year. Instead of having staff write grants at the start of the year, when staff are especially busy, EEF is going to begin accepting applications in the spring for the following school year. On a related note, the email also stated they will be announcing this year’s grants recipients this week.
• Smarter Balanced Classroom Activity Requirement Removed for 2015-2016 – I’m on an ODE Communications email list and got an email saying that for this school year the multi-state Smarter Balanced Consortium has voted to remove the Classroom Activity as a required precursor of the Smarter Balanced performance tasks for math and ELA. I’m sure there will be further details on this coming from 4J, but if you’d like more details, see the above linked email from ODE.
 • Latina/o/x – Here is an article about how student groups are beginning to change their names to Latinx. It is worthwhile for institutions to think about how this might effect student identity and gender identity. “Many student groups are changing their names to use “Latinx” instead of “Latino” and “Latina.” By Josh Logue    Inside Education Article    December 8, 2015

• Safety Reminders – 4J’s Risk Manager, Randi Bowers-Payne, sent an email reminder to principals about the annual Building Safety inspections, saying there are consistently several areas needing improvement across buildings. These areas include maintaining a clear path to electrical panels, shelves needing to store the heaviest objects lowest to the ground, and remembering to lock COWs to help prevent theft. See the above email for Randi’s complete list.

• News from the Emerald Empire Reading Council – Here’s the November Newsletter from the Emerald Empire Reading Council. This month’s newsletter includes a number of workshops and information on a $100 grant for reading and writing activities (small grants are usually easier to win). If you’d like more information, visit their 90’s-esque website.

• Parenting Group at the Child and Family Center – A therapist at the Child and Family Center (CFC) is offering a reasonably priced, mindfulness-based parenting group for parents of children ages 2-8 years old who are experiencing behavior concerns. They will start the group in Mid-January and offer free childcare and a light dinner at each group. See the email we received and the flyer for details and contact information if there are any families you’d like to share this with.

• District Admin Updates – Linda O’Shea is the new half-time principal at Family School Elementary. Linda served and continues at half-time as the assistant principal at ATA. This mid-year modification is due to Kathy Owen’s shift in responsibilities, leaving an opening at Family School. Kathy was split between Family School and Twin Oaks, but is now full-time at Twin Oaks, though taking on additional responsibilities. The last Twin Oaks principal was the district 504 Coordinator.

• Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) – With the passage of ESSA, replacing No Child Left Behind, the work in many ways is just beginning, because the new law does away with so many federal mandates and shifts control to states regarding assessment, accountability and evaluation, state legislatures will be playing a decisive role in determining how ESSA is implemented. If you want all the nitty gritty details, see this EdWeek article which offers a pretty comprehensive summary of the new legislation. And here’s an OregonLive article that includes reactions from Oregon lawmakers, which gives hints at the changes we might see in our state.

Have a great last week of 2015, everyone!

Joel

Here is a powerful poem on the subject of poverty. How does is speak to you?

Hi Everyone,

The Viaje Musicale was such a great performance. The students and staff involved were filled with a tremendous pride and school spirit.  As I watched both evening events my heart warmed with all the families, staff, and community who came to attend. Dr. Balderas told me he was very impressed with the kids on Thursday night. Mr. Adee does such a masterful job with his students. His time and effort brings so much to our school. We are very fortunate to have him work with our students.  Thank you Mr. Adee for bringing us together in such a beautiful performance.

What is happening?

• Family Resource Center Shoes for Camino Kids Project We have all the shoes (50 pairs) in.  Alicia will be fitting the the children on Tuesday. She needs to fit them on the children because it’s been a while since they were ordered and kids grow! If the shoes do not fit Alicia will have to submit a reorder form to Shoes That Fit by the 18th. The office will be calling students from classrooms  on Tuesday through out the day. Please expect them to leave for 5 to ten minutes. Alicia has provided us with a list. Please let me know if you have any questions.

• MCCBD 2016 Classroom Reading Challenge!– Teachers! Multicultural Kids wants to help you build your classroom library with diverse, inclusive and multicultural books! Here’s how to get a free book through Multicultural Children’s Book Day on January 27th. You can also win a Skype author visit with a children’s book author! They will draw a winner from the teachers who signed up. This year the Skype author visit is with (to be announced).

MCCBD Classroom Reading Challenge

• When Grit isn’t Enough – Here is an article which hit deep for me.  Much work in our district and across the nation has focused on changing student thinking from a fixed to a growth mindset. I myself have read Carol Dweck’s work and studied Angela Duckworth. Somehow, parts of it did not sit well with me. This article adequately describes some of the shortfalls of growth mindset thinking. It is worth the read. Tyrone Howard, the associate dean of UCLA delivered this powerful presentation.

• District Title 1 Newsletter – Here is the latest district level Title 1 Newsletter that went out to Title 1 Coordinators and principals. As usual, this month’s newsletter is mostly coordinator specific information and tasks, but there is a nice video titled Dear Teacher: Heartfelt Advice for Teachers from Students. The video features kids with a formal diagnosis, such as autism, Asperger’s, ADHD, learning disabilities, Sensory Processing Disorder, and Central Auditory Processing Disorder — along those who just need to move while learning – and how they find it challenging to shine in a traditional classroom. They wanted to share with educators how their brain works and offer simple ways teachers can help.

• Christmas at School –  Please have a balanced approach to putting up Christmas items around the building.  I was reminded how this would feel to students, families and staff who do not celebrate the holiday. While staff do have a certain level of academic freedom in what they teach, we do want to balance that with being inclusive. Adding multiple decorations for Hannukah, Kwaanza, and Eid al-Fitr, and Winter Solstice make a big difference for students of different backgrounds.  Please be mindful in your class activities and displays as we enter the holiday season.

• Math and Science Lesson Videos from Seven Countries – In this article, educators Douglas Lyons and Andrew Niblock recommend the videos on the TIMSS (Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study) website. These classroom videos from seven countries show how the same subject matter is taught in dramatically different ways in other countries – and get teachers thinking about unconsciously held cultural assumptions about teaching and learning. The videos show seventh- and eight-grade math and science lessons in Australia, the Czech Republic, Hong Kong SAR, Japan, the Netherlands, and Switzerland. To access the videos, go to the TIMSS website (free registration), click on the subject, then the country, and then choose one of the lessons.

That is all for the week.
