4th Grade Play “Annie” Presented in Spanish

Hi Everyone,

We’ve all survived another school year! Last week was an incredibly busy one with the 4th grade play, the PBIS Recess, finishing testing, the assemblies,  and so on and so forth. I have to say that I am so proud of all the hard work that you do each day and what you have done for our students all year long.

I also wanted to take a moment to recognize Cathy for her amazing dedication to our school. Cathy does so much for our students each and every day. Her care, and attention to detail has made a difference for our kids for many many years. I know she doesn’t like much fanfare but please do take a little time this week to offer your gratitude. Thank you for your service Cathy and may you have an enjoyable retirement.

What is happening?

• Field Trip Planning– I had Megan create a field trip organizer for the school. I asked her to do this so we can predict when big trips happen in the school. Please take the time fill it out.

• Year End Checklist & Safety Reminders – If you haven’t already, remember to sign up for a checkout time with Edna. Here’s a link to a Checklist for Closing 2015. And as staff and students clean out classroom spaces, Risk Management sent the following reminder:

To walk where you look and look where you walk;
Lift with legs not backs;
Ask for help when it’s needed;
Keep exits, doorways, and hallways clear

And I encourage you to continue to get rid of things.  Please remember that when we move in two years that there will be much les room in your classroom.  Really take a hard look at your materials.  If you have not used it for three years, you probably don’t need it to teach!

• Class Lists to Specialists – On Monday I’ll run next year’s class lists by specialists to have another set of eyes on next year’s combinations of students. Bryan and Jennifer have already looked over them. I’ll let classroom teachers know if specialists see any issues myself or others may have missed.

• Staff Last Day of School Ice Cream Celebration – Wednesday @11:30 – It’s been on the calendar, but I wanted to make sure everyone knows our last day of school celebration will be this Wednesday at 11:30 in the cafeteria. I’ll have ice cream, sundae toppings and root beer float fixings for a delicious way to close out the year. See you all there! And on a related note, don’t forget about our Staff End of Year Celebration at on Thursday at 3:00!

•Lunches on Wednesday

Rene wanted to clarify that she and Maja will deliver your lunches the last day of school to your classrooms starting at 10:00am. You do not need to worry about picking them up from the cafeteria. Thank you so much to everyone that has already got their class orders in.  Please get yours in if you have not yet.

• Free Opportunity for Students and Families – Linked here is information on an opportunity for students and a chaperone to attend the NCAA Track and Field Championships. Youth in grades K-8 are invited to attend a special Olympic Day presentation on June 13th, as part of the final day of the NCAA Track and Field Championships. Youth will hear from Olympians as they share the importance of dedication, commitment to school, hard work and how to achieve your personal best in whatever interests you. And then, they get to see the meet.

• Why nonacademic skills matter – Educators and experts agree about the importance of nonacademic skills in education. This article explores the various terms used to describe this “stuff,” including character education, grit and soft skills.

• How To Tackle Digital Citizenship During The First 5 Days Of School – Here’s an article to think about for next fall. Digital citizenship is not a one time discussion. It is an ongoing process that needs to be taught to all grade levels. The problem is that things are changing so rapidly that it is difficult for everyone to keep up to date with the trends. Everyone has to be educated and develop an understanding of the role digital citizenship plays in our everyday lives. There is so much that goes into being a digital citizen. See this short article for more details.

Once again,  thank you all for such hard work this year.  It has been an amazing ride and I look forward to a restful Summer and a new school year with you in 2015-2016.

Saludos cordiales, Joel
