• Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast – Please submit the names of your volunteers to Alicia as soon as possible. She is sending out the invites on Monday. Thank you to the three teachers who already submitted their volunteers names. The invites will be placed in your box by Monday.

• Tuesday’s Staff Meeting Agenda –

1. Supply Fee Decision for 2015 and Back to School Processes.

2.  School wide Communication Plan for 15-16

3. Moving logistics and needs for end of the year.

4. Curriculum Mapping Format and clarification.

• Downtown Admin Updates – Monica Brown has accepted the position of Chief Financial Officer/Director of Support Services and will begin her new assignment on July 27th. Monica is currently working for the Oregon Department of Justice as their CFO. Before that she served as principal legislative analyst for the Legislative Fiscal Office in Salem. She has also worked in the financial offices of the Oregon State Police, Oregon Department of Administrative Services-Budget and Management and the Public Works Department. Monica is excited to be returning home to Eugene. In the 1990’s she worked for the City of Eugene.

• Not Interchangeable – Sex? Sexual Orientation? Gender Identity? Gender Expression? Knowing how these terms are distinct from one another can make a huge difference in your classroom. This may not seem like an elementary level issue, but it is something that’s come up for elementary students in our building this year. Read more in this Teaching Tolerance article.

• Mindfulness – Great Video for Children – A simple message about mindfulness and managing emotions from children, called Just Breathe that I thought was worth sharing.

• Carpooling to OABE–I imagine that some of you will want to carpool to the OABE conference. We will briefly spend time to arrange this in the staff meeting on Tuesday. Edna is working on  lodging arrangements at the nearest hotel to OABE.

It’s the last full work week of the school year! Make it a good one!

Week of May 24

May 25th, 2015

Hello Estrellas Brillantes,

I hope you all had a relaxing three day weekend that will carry you through the last two and a half weeks of schools (9 1/2 student days, but who’s counting).

Here are some important items for the week:

Speech Room 20 (Stewart)

Title room 24 & 26 as needed. (Baissac)

• Year End Checklist – With the school year winding down, I’ll be putting the end of the year checklist in mailboxes early this week. This is a list of tasks to complete before you leave for your well deserved summer vacation. It’s pretty much the same as in the past, but please let me know if you have any questions. I’ll also be posting a sign-up sheet in the office for staff sign up for checkout times.

• Staff Technology Summer Checkout – Related to the above items, if you are planning to take home any of your technology (laptop, iPads, etc.) over the summer, be sure to fill out and turn in a signed copy of the 4J Technology Equipment Checkout Contract  (PDF) to the office. Peggy will collect the forms before we leave for the Summer.

• 2015-2016 Class Lists Due Next Week – Class lists are due to the office Tuesday (That’s tomorrow.). If your grade level hasn’t done it already, please complete them and turn them into my box on Tuesday. We would like specialist to be able to review them by the end of the week.

• Physical Education Expansion K-8 (PEEK-8) Grant – Not much of an update yet, but I did want to let people know that I’ve been working with Kay Fullerton, the 4J Grant Writer, on applying for  all year PE again. ODE has yet to announce PEEK-8 grants for next year and we’re waiting to hear back from them as to what will be the timeline for applications.

• United to End Racism Events – 4J is presenting an exciting series of events this week that are going to be happening in our schools and community between May 26 – 29. Please see the attached flyers for a community event, an in-house event and a visit with Gyasi Ross. I will be there and have been involved organizing them. Come join me in the discussion.

• What Do You Do With A Student Who Fidgets? – Here’s a recent story from NPR that Rachel shared with me. It’s actually a follow up to a report they did on a small study in which students with ADHD performed better on memory tasks when they were allowed to spin and move around in a swiveling chair. Following that story, they got hundreds of comments, tweets and emails with suggestions for fidgets, including one quite clever one involving wrapping bike inner tubes around the legs of a chair, allowing kids to bounce their legs during learning.

• How has technology changed the face of learning? – Technology already has changed K-12 education forever, asserts Matthew Lynch, dean of the School of Education at Virginia Union University. In this commentary, he writes that technology has revolutionized classroom collaboration, information gathering, remote learning and teacher preparation.

• Bilingual Students Need Support in Their Native Language

Dual-language programs can help English-language learners achieve proficiency in a new language and foster confidence in their language skills, writes Joe Levitan, director of educational programming at the Sacred Valley Project in Cusco, Peru. In this commentary, he recalls two ELL students and two different approaches to language learning.

What is going on?

• Two Dual Language Articles worth reading/watching–

Children exposed to two languages are better communicators:- Here is a new study on bilingualism.

http://news.uchicago.edu/article/2015/05/11/children-exposed-multiple-languages-may-be-better-natural-communicators

Here is a great article and short video on the popularity of bilingual programs in our nation.  Bilingual schools are really exploding!

http://www.voanews.com/content/interest-bilingual-education-rises-united-states/2768371.html

• Purge Your Old Materials! – Related to the new school, I wanted to remind folks that it is time to get rid of things you no longer use or want in the new building. It is not too earl to get rid of things.  With many teachers moving rooms, it is a great time to get rid of stuff. If staff have any large non-recyclable items that won’t fit in your garbage can that you want to get rid of, let me know and Craig and can make a plan for their disposal. This is a good time to start disposing of materials you haven’t touched for a few years which will mean less to deal with when we pack up to move into the new school.

• Spring PBIS Newsletter – This is the last district PBIS Newsletter for the school year. Shasta Quigley and Kim Reinhardt took the lead on this one, which has some helpful behavior management tips and tricks for getting through the last few weeks smoothly.

• Foundations in Mathematics K-5 – Camino del Río has a grwat opportunity to beef up on Math foundations this Summer. A couple stff have attended before, and I have heard great things about it. It’s a voluntary training, but extended contract is available for teachers who attend. It would be great to have another team of Howard teachers attend this summer! See the linked flyer for information on the class. It is our goal to have  at least 5 staff in the building trained this summer.  Reid  Sheppard highly recommends the training for thos who did not take part in the Investigations trainings when adoption occurred in 2010. You can register for the Math Foundations class on the 4J Workshops webpage.

• Many Kinds of Families – With Mother’s Day behind us and Father’s Day around the corner, here are some elementary age activities from Teaching Tolerance to help your students appreciate all family structures, including those that may not include mothers or fathers. We are planning on purchasing some videos published by Groundspark.  If you have a special request from this page, let me know and I will put it on the order list.

Attendance Letter improving attendance– The attendance pilot has been helping get more students on time.  We still have a handfull of families tht struggle to get to school on time but overall student unexcused attendance is way down. Jasmine has helped us get this system working on many levels.

Financials wrapping up for the year– No more receipts can be turned in for the year.  Check in with Edna about your remaining balance by the end of next week so you have a good feel what you will be carrying over in the student body fund. She will be happy to share those balances with you.

Family School Survey– I would like to see that our school has a very high participation rate in this district wide survey. I have been thinking that we should create an incentive for families to complete it.  Could you all share with your parents via your own communication systems about the survey? Maybe every family that completes it gets a certificate or small gift of some kind. What do you all think?

http://www.4j.lane.edu/2015/05/parent-school-survey-2015/

I hope you all have a great week.

Saludos cordiales,

Joel

• Two Dual Language Articles worth reading/watching–

Teacher Georgina Georgelos recognized for dual-language classroom

Guero Loco: Bringing The Beat To Bilingualism

2015-2016 Class Lists – With only 21 student days left in the year, it’s time to start thinking about next year’s class lists. Below are the placement card sheets (Placement Card 2014-15 3rd 4th  Placement Card 2014-15 1st 2nd) to create your class lists. Here is the class list Class Placement Form. Once you have filled out your data on the placement cards creat the class lists on the form above.  Class lists will be due to the office by grading day, Friday, June 5th. You will have time to work on these cards on May 22 and also on the IIPM  Consult Day, May 21.

• Summative Evaluations Update – HR has given principals the okay to focus summative evaluations on probationary teachers, so for contract (non-probationary) teachers, unless your someone who I’ve already scheduled a date for a summative meeting or unless you let me know that you’d like to have an end-of-year summative meeting, I’ll plan to do write ups only for probationary licensed staff. On a related note, HR is also planning to cut back on some of the Effectiveness and Growth Systems requirements for next year. They’re in draft form at the moment, but generally speaking the requirements for contract staff will be on more of an every other year cycle.

• News from the Emerald Empire Reading Council – Here’s the May Newsletter from the Emerald Empire Reading Council. This month’s newsletter includes professional development opportunities (including a free online one through the Library of Congress for PDUs) and other events. If you’d like more information, visit their low tech website.

• Title 1 Newsletter – Here is the latest district level Title 1 Newsletter that went out to Title 1 Coordinators and principals. This month’s issue is again mostly coordinator specific information and tasks, but there are some links to some workshop opportunities staff may be interested in attending.

• #BlackLivesMatter to 4J – #BlackLivesMatter to 4J grassroots group that’s formed with the goal of facilitating a series of events that will offer students and community members an opportunity to engage in dialogue and education around the #BlackLivesMatter movement. Attached is a draft flyer of some planned future meetings, but I’ll keep folks updated as this group and their activities develop. The next meeting is Tuesday May 12 at 5 PM if you would like to join me.

• Teaching While White – For Molly Tansey and Melissa Katz, being white educators means taking responsibility for confronting racism, privilege and injustice. Supporting students of color in your classroom is about more than having conversations about race and privilege. It is about having high expectations for every single student that walks through your door. And when a student isn’t doing well in class or has disengaged almost entirely? It’s about working hard to figure out the root causes of the problem before ever considering discipline and punishment. Read this Teaching Tolerance article on how the authors breaks it down.

I hope you all have a great school week.  Take time for yourself and celebrate our hard work as we get closer to the end of an amazing school year.

Lila, Anna, Solomon and myself at the naming in Portland. My niece’s Hebrew name is Aleeza Yael.

Saludos cordiales,

Joel

• Smarter Balanced Opt Outs Deadline Change – Downtown emailed principals last week that the deadline for opting out of tests has changed and the district will now accept and approve forms for any student until testing concludes. If a student has already taken one test and we receive an opt-out form, then the student will not have to take the remaining test segments. The opt-out form can be found at the following link, and should to be turned in to the superintendent’s office. Note, the actual form is at the very bottom on the linked document.

•Hilliard Sidewalk Issues– Shane McRhodes sent me an email last week about the sidewalk that will lead to River Road for the new building.  Apparently, there is an issue with creating a sidewalk that leads all the way to the intersection.  There are property lines that make it hard to create a clear right of way.  The district will need to work closely with one of the property owners about creating the right of way somehow.  I will keep you all updated on this issue.

•Classroom Assignments for next year– I have been working on several scenarios for classroom placements.  I will release my final decision by the end of the week. If you would like to share your feelings about the placements, please come by to see my ideas and share your own.

•PLT Agenda-

2. HASD Data Collection and Analysis

3. CAP Revisions and approval by PLT

Oh, and happy mother’s day to all!

tu lengua? ¿Si soy viento nacido de tu roca?
