Week of January 30

January 29th, 2017

Hello Shining Stars,

It was so encouraging to give tours last week of our classrooms to prospective families.  It gives me great pride to show the public what amazing work you all do each day. We provide such a warm and inviting space for students to learn.  Our work is important on so many levels.  You have much to be proud of.  I continually get feedback from current families about how  special an environment we have created: challenging, creative, bicultural, and warm. Teachers, as your students enter the classroom Monday, be ready to hold them and help them feel wanted and safe. Be ready to talk with them about whatever is on their mind.

Here are some important announcements of the week:

• Supporting Undocumented Students: For many, including myself, there has been a lot of concern about the Presidential Executive Order related to immigration and how it might effect students and families.  School District HR Associate Director, Christine Nesbitt, has drafted an informational memo regarding policies and practices designed to support students who may be undocumented.  Here is the memo titled: Supporting Undocumented Students. Please read it carefully.

•The Sun Ray Challenge: We have one more week to complete the Sun Ray Challenge.  The assembly will occur on Wednesday, February 7 in the morning before walking to class. The assembly will happen in the Gym on February 7 in the morning where we will make snow- people.  Do you want to volunteer? Please see the updated information in your boxes which Jennifer will be giving to you.

•Science Teacher Leader Shift at ECDR: Megan Murphy has passed on the Science Teacher Leader responsibilities to Jaime Jones. Nikita is also considering supporting us by co-leading in this area.  In the coming weeks we will be hearing more from them about the curriculum adoption and some details the district wants us to be informed on.

Assembly for Viaje Musicale, February 1  at 1:00 PM- This Wednesday there will be a Viaje Musicale assembly with Mr. Adee.  Please expect to leave your classroom close to 12:45 to the assembly.  The assembly will last to close to end of the day 1:35.  However,  we will leave backpacks and coats in class and will have time to return to the classroom. The assembly will be in the GYM this time where Mr. Adee will have the instruments set up.

Viaje Musical: February 2nd 6:00pm- It’s happening!  Viaje Musical is a musical extravaganza involving ALL 4th and 5th graders.  Students will sing, dance and play music from Mexico, Cuba, Peru, Chile, Spain and New York!Thursday, February 2nd at 6:00pm (in the Camino gym). One night only! The evening performance is an important part of Camino students’ education.  Please make every effort to attend. Parents are also invited to an assembly version of Viaje Musical on Wednesday, February 1st at 12:40. ¡Viva la música!

• 2017-2018 Staffing Timeline – Staffing allocations for next school year will be distributed to principals at a meeting on Wednesday, February 22nd at 4:00. Principals will also receive SSD and Title 1 allocations at this same meeting. I’ll email allocations to staff this same evening. Staffing plans will be due three weeks later on Wednesday, March 15th.

I’m planning to follow similar process for finalizing the 17/18 staffing plan. After receiving our allocations I will draw up potential staffing scenarios and will email those to staff for input. I’ll hold an optional staff meeting for people to discuss as a group the draft plans. Both PLT and the whole staff will have a say in the process. I’ll also plan to meet with grade level teams for input before my final decision. Let me know if you have questions on any of this.

• 2017-2018 Enrollment Projections – Last week, principals received enrollment projections for next year. Our current total enrollment is 327 students (though that number fluctuates weekly) and for next year we are projected for 363 students. I have already advocated with the Oscar Lauriero and Brooke Wagner about not factoring in a new building bump in enrollment. This is especially concerning when we consider staffing for a bilingual teacher. I advocated that we might be closer to 390 students upon opening in September. As many of you know, last year Howard and Roosevelt were both well over their projection.  It is very  common for new schools to surpass the projections.  I am not sure what this will mean for us, but  we hope that we get an FTE increase in teachers. However, the needs index (poverty, mobility, ELL, etc.) can change and the district is looking at some budget reductions, so we won’t officially know where we stand on staffing until Feb. 22nd. The projections by grade level are 64  (KG),  60 (1st), 66 (2nd), 79 (3rd), 41 (4th), 53 (5th). The district Title 1 budget sounds like it’s going to be reduced for next school year, though we are projected to have more students. I am hoping we stay at similar levels.

• 2017-2018 Staffing Survey – With staffing allocations coming out in three weeks, I’d like staff to complete a short survey, on this linked Google Form . I’d like to know staff members’ (including EA’s, custodians, and office staff) individual plans and preferences for the future as well as your thoughts on next year’s staffing plan and general ideas for the master schedule. Please complete the survey by Wednesday, February 15th so I can get input before drawing up potential staffing scenarios. All answers will be kept confidential and please let me know if you have any questions.

• Free Book Set Loans from Eugene Public Library – The Eugene Public Library has provided picture book collections to kindergarten classrooms at Howard and Spanish language collections at El Camino del Río, and they are now ready to expand this service, providing picture book collections for primary grades and fiction and nonfiction collections for older grades (typically 50 books per classroom). They want to make it easy for you and can deliver boxes of books to the office. Teachers can use them this year and have the option of keeping them another year. If you’re interested, let me know by the end of the week and I’ll sign you up.

• Friday’s EA Extravaganza and Grading Day – A repeat from last week, but this Friday EAs are supposed to attend the annual EA Extravaganza at the Ed Center, 7:45-2:30. Teachers, HR did email grading day expectations this past week to principals, which is the same as in the past (Notify me if you’re working from home, make plans if you need to collaborate with colleagues, and do make sure you are working and not running errands around town, in which case we’ll lose this flexibility in the future.). Report cards will go home Friday, Feb. 10th.

•Taking it Up is Back!– This year, the district has decided to ensure that Taking It Up will return as a two day Professional Development.  The district has hired a 4j employee named Maria Donnatell Shaad, daughter of Maria Shaad (counselor and Spanish teacher), to organize the experience.  If you are a new employee to the building, I will probably ask you to go to this PD experience on racial conversations.  It is May 1st and 2nd this year.

Teaching and Learning for Emerging Bilinguals

I hope you all enjoyed the work with  Audrey and Edward last Friday.  It was  so fulfilling to see our teachers engaged in such a rich conversation  about biliteracy.  Below is a video that shows the essential elements of “The Bridge.” This is a great video from a kindergarten class that I think you will all enjoy.

We will be going more in depth to this concept in our session in March.

Week of January 23

January 22nd, 2017

Hello Shining Stars,

It is actually a pleasure to see the last of the snow finally disappear.  I also noticed that the days are getting a little longer though it is still pretty dark getting to work. It will get better. February is around the corner.

Also of note,  I really appreciated the support from Jennifer this weekend at the showcase. She took over for me when I had many family responsibilities.  We had many prospective parents sign up for tours and she did a great job explaining to them the structure of our dual language program. Thanks Jennifer.

Here is a list of the news items for the week:

Fire Drill Redo – The last fire drill was too noisy.  We need to work on quiet lines and waiting patiently for an all clear signal.  It was rainy and there were rainbows in the sky but it was also difficult to give a clear direction to students.  Also,  some staff that were subs were not well prepared for the drill. Please make sure that all subs know what to do. In addition, if you have a volunteer, they should be with the staff by the wall ball court.  It makes it easier to count all that need to be accounted for in one spot. We will redo the drill in the last week of January. I will run the drill on the 31st in the morning around 10:30.

Moving and Packing for the New Building-Last week I met with facilities to discuss packing and moving in to the new building.  I will be having facilities come to share with you some instructions about packing and I will also be putting some instructions in your box. The most important thing you can do now is to begin to get rid of things. THIN OUT THE AMOUNT OF STUFF IN YOUR ROOMS. THERE IS LESS ROOM IN THE NEW BUILDING FOR MATERIALS. I will be ordering several recycling bins this week to help you get rid of paper.  They will pick these up often. We will also order a dumpster in February for non recyclable items.  We will be making aware the recycling organizations of Eugene  about our school.

Boxes will also be ordered this week. There are some instructions I will share with you on packing once we begin that process. When you finish a unit or project, consider packing it up or putting it away in a box this year. That way, you can box it up as you go.

In addition, there will be a salvage day once staff have left the building before demolition begins.  Working on getting rid of things now is VERY IMPORTANT. After a certain date in late June, no one will be allowed to be in the building due to abatement and demolition.

New Building Update- The building is coming a long well. Many have asked how the weather has effected the construction timeline.  Chambers is doing a great job keeping up with the overall schedule.  The roof system is being put in place and the metal framing of classrooms is more than 1/2 complete.  Very soon, the building will start to get covered with exterior materials.  Many of the trades are already on site doing plumbing, and other trades.  Last week I shared a video of a drone flight through the building. Expect another one of those in early February.  I am speaking with Pivot Architecture about lessons that the architects can do with a class or two. email me if you have interest in having a class with an architect.  I will include you in the planning of the lesson.  It may include PR and news crews involvement as well.

Technology PD- Next week Misty will be back to work on with you for more technology learning customized to your needs. Let Erin Skoubo know if there are areas of growth you want to work on.  There will be a primary session on Tuesday morning and a Wednesday PLC time session for intermediate. In addition,  I have asked Misty to explain a little about the new building technology.

Friday PD Focus with Audrey Lucero and Edward Olivos- This upcoming Friday is a no student day.    We will be covering Chapters 5,6, and 7.  Please skim your biliteracy text to prepare for a conversation on this topic.

All EA’s are invited to join us for the teaching for biliteracy session. EA’s, if you want to make other arrangements on this day, contact me in the office for permission to use compensation time.  Come see me if you have questions.

The schedule will go as follows:

8:00-10:00 Morning session breakfast and coffee provided.

10:00-10:15 Break

10:00-12:30 2nd session

12:30-1:30 Lunch and farewell to Myka. (Lunch will be provided, please bring a beverage) Gluten free items will be available. If you have other restrictions, please let me know. We will attempt to accommodate your dietary restrictions.

1:30-4:00 Prep time for staff.

Focus of the January 31  Reading/Literacy Inclusion Conversation in PLT- We are working on the idea of how to deliver literacy in our building.  We are considering options to reduce the amount of pull out time in the school. Pull out from classrooms can be very damaging to a child’s self esteem.  It is also very challenging to schedule and makes specials and other programs more difficult to deliver. Take a look at this presentation on student focused coaching. We want to explore separated interventions versus classroom support.  Another consideration we will discuss is the walk to read model for core instruction. Finally,  we will also evaluate how the language of instruction for ELA /SLA is going.   Currently, we have a simultaneous literacy model of instruction, meaning we teach Spanish and English literacy to students at the same time.  We want to look at our results in kinder and 1st grade especially to determine how those levels are fairing in this model.

PE  Breakdown day this Friday- I asked Rachel Farkas to break down the PE materials on January 27 for her move out day.  This will mean no lapse in service for teachers on Friday, February 2. Thank you Rachel! The PE/ Music Schedule is still being revised. I will get it to staff this week.

No-School Days Make Up: Stand By- Cydney Vandercar shared that Eugene School District 4J already has had an unprecedented number of no-school days due to an unusual amount of severe winter weather—6 full days plus one 2-hour delay so far—and winter is not over yet. We do expect to restore at least 3 school days in June. However, the district is looking at possible alternatives for recovering lost instruction time.  All options for meeting state instructional time requirements will be considered in collaboration with the employee associations, including possibilities such as adjusting daily schedules or making up school days before the end of the year. When these decisions are made and an adjusted calendar is approved by the school board, you will be notified and the plan will be widely communicated to parents and the public.

Skillful Teacher Rescheduled-The new date is Monday, January 23 from 8:30-3:30 at Lane ESD. Please re-register for the event on the Lane ESD website. http://www.lesd.k12.or.us/workshops/index.html

United Way Campaign-You should have received your pledge sheet in your school mailboxes this week. The campaign runs through Friday, February 3rd. Completed pledge sheets should be sent to Lupe Mercado/Ed Center. Lupe will collect, and then get them to Eric.  Our new 4J Schools United Way Representative, MacCionnaith, is happy to answer any questions or find somebody to come to your building to speak to your staff about United Way.  For more information on how United Way of Lane County is assisting in Eugene, please visit United Way website here.

Week of January 16

January 15th, 2017

MLK-Charcter

Hello Shining Stars,

This week we celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King and our country’s path towards a more perfect union and his goal to end racial discrimination in the United States.  I am especially impressed with the lessons I have observed in the social justice club and the 3rd grade classroom.  It is so encouraging to see students school wide attempting to make their school a place that recognizes the need for diversity, justice, and positive learning spaces. Social justice is the view that everyone deserves to enjoy the same economic, political and social rights, regardless of race, socioeconomic status, gender or other characteristics. Teaching social justice in the classroom is crucial for preparing young people to become responsible global citizens in the 21st century.  I commend you as a staff for living this dream and teaching it for all of our students.

Some important announcements for the week:

• Investigations Workbook Purge – Downtown is collecting any and all unused/unwanted Investigations workbooks. There are some workbooks in storage that I am planning to send downtown on Thursday if I don’t hear from any teachers before then saying you want them before then. Teachers should also let me know if you have any unused/unwanted workbooks in your classroom that I can collect before Thursday as well.

• School Showcase & School Choice Info – School Choice season has begun and the School Showcase (see Kerry Delf’s email for details) will be held this Saturday at the Ed Center, 9:00-12:00 if any staff members are interested/willing to help to talk about our school. This event is for families to learn about all 4J schools in one place at the same time. Last year they provided breakfast for staff helping at the event, including a vegetarian option. Let me know if any of you are interested/willing to help promote El Camino del Rio and tell families why they should come to our school!

Another related items: One, the first School Choice Visitation Week is next week, January 23-27, so be prepared for families to visit classrooms over the course of the week. There will also be one evening event at our school in February.

• Oregon Battle of the Books Regional Competition, March 18th – If you’d like to root on El Camino del Rio’s OBOB team, the Elementary OBOB Regionals will be Saturday, March 18th at North Eugene High School. More details to come soon.

•Reminder about PLC Time:  With the short month of November and the bumpy month of December many of us have gotten out of sync a bit on Wednesdays.  Please remember that PLC Time runs from 1:45 (or the end of dismissal duty) to 2:45. Then, at 2:45, teachers have their scheduled protected 1 hour of individual prep time.  Please show up to your PLC time on time to work on formative assessment, planning, and instruction.  I have noticed that some have chosen to go back to classrooms to plan. This is OK if you are following the PLC expectations.  Please support your team and do the important work to improve formative assessments in these groups.  That is the main focus of this time.

Teaching and Learning Emerging Bilinguals:

Five Things Teachers Can Do to Improve Learning for ELLs in the New Year, by Kristina Robertson:

It is resolution season! Of course, we all know that resolutions are hard to keep and can often be unrealistic. Teachers are always looking for ways to improve in the classroom; to assist with any of your New Year’s resolutions that relate to instruction, Kristina recommends five specific and measurable actions you can implement to assist ELLs in the classroom – but suggests that you pick just one to try! Take a look at her article to learn a good ELL technique.

Here is the First Lady of the United States describing the assets of immigrants and bilinguals in our society today. She makes some great points in this minute clip.

Week of January 9

January 8th, 2017

Hello Shining Stars,

I hope you’ve all stayed safe during the snowy and icy weather. It was nice to see all of the teachers and kids again on Friday in the shortest school week ever.  I hope to get to a state of normalcy next week.

Important School Announcements:

• Adventures of the Tartar Patrol PreK-3 Assembly Cancelled – Due to the number of days we have missed I am trying to be more judicious about the disruptions we have at school. We have cancelled the Tartar Patrol assembly this year.

• Teacher Observations – I’m going to try to get some formal and informal observations finished this week. If you’re someone who is on the formal observation cycle, let me know a date and time for me to come by. For informal, I’ll simply drop by for 10-20 minutes. I will also work with many of you to reschedule our formals we had planned in December.

• January Care Team Referrals – The January Student Care Team meeting is in a couple weeks, which means that referrals to the team are due a week from this Friday. Please let me know soon if you have any student and/or family situations you’d like to bring to the team. It’s best if you can get a release form signed (PDF or DOC), but we can also bring “hypothetical” student situations if you cannot get a release form signed. Let me know if you have questions about the team or any potential referrals.

• Staffing Updates – It is with sadness and joy that I bring you the following news.  Myka has accepted a job as the Bilingual Program Coordinator/Case Manager Personal Agent for The Mentor Network. Her job will be to case manage 39 customers in the Lane County area by assessing, planning, creating ISP’s, reaching out to service providers and helping intellectually and developmentally disabled individuals become self-sufficient. Some of her clients will be Spanish speakers. This is a dream job for Myka and fits many of her skills and interests. I could not be happier for her. However, we will greatly miss Myka. She has done an excellent job supporting our families, students, teachers and myself.  She has handled complex our financial transactions including Title 1 and Priority school funds with great skill. Her last day will be January 27.  I have posted a requisition to the district HR website this weekend and hope to have interviews in the 4th week of January or sooner.

• 4J Radio Training Video – If you are someone who uses one of the district radios, the Facilities Department has asked that you watch this linked 4-minute 4J Radio Training Video.

• Martin Luther King Jr. Day Resources and Opportunities – Martin Luther King Jr. Day is next Monday, so here are a few resources that may be worth checking out: Scholastic, National Education Association (NEA), and Education World.  Also, please join me  on MLK day to march together.   see this day as a “day on” not a day off. See the poster above and details for further information.

“The 2017 MLK Jr. March is posed to be the biggest to date. Come together! Show your support for social justice and inclusive communities. Using centers to differentiate for English Learners: Centers are used in multiple grade levels and in various subject areas as a way to provide small group instruction to a group of students while keeping the rest of the students in the class engaged in meaningful and productive practice. When working with English learners, centers can provide opportunities to deliver specific lessons to help students improve language skills, preview upcoming content or review previously presented content.
