Simple Problem Simple Solution: Candle Holder

Published by

Description:

Students will explore different software applications for creating a simple 3D prototype design. As a class we will brainstorm ideas for replicating and/or customizing designs for common simple objects that are used to solve routine problems. Examples might include is designing a tool to fasten materials together (wrench, hammer, screw driver), lego type building blocks, etc.

Students will use 123d Design and/or Sketchup to “solve” their problem. Objects will be imported to Meshmixer for final tweaking and prepping for 3D printing.

Reflection: This project was very fun, but also hard and time consuming. The very first step was probably the hardest, thinking of what your project was going to be. First I wanted to do a bowl made out of hexagons, but that didn’t work. So I had to start from scratch. The prototype I made is a candle holder with flowers subtracted out of the sides so that the image of those flowers will be projected onto the wall. The second thing I did to create this was bring out a sphere out and by extruding a circle I placed under it I cut off the bottom and to so that it would be able to sit on a flat surface. Next using the Ellipse tool I created circles making the shape of a flower and then extruded it. All I had to do after that was make them different sizes, move and tilt them, then finally subtract them out of the sphere. Then we did a test print and it was to thin, so I had to make it thicker. It was sort of frustrating at some points but it was  mostly fun.
