Monday, 5/18 – POW: “New Beginnings”
For this assignment I would like to see the new beginnings around you. Maybe you are developing new habits, like keeping a journal, daily card games with a sibling, learning to play a new instrument, starting a garden and watching the new little plants burst through the ground. Go forth and see the “new beginnings” that spring has brought your way. Pay attention to angles, point of view, lighting and shadows of your photos. Always take more than one, so you can get just the right shot.
Thursday, 5/14 – Create/Choice: Mandalas; Watercolor Techniques #2; 7 Pencil Drawing Techniques
*Mandalas For Beginners – You can make circles easily with any round object (lids, plates, cups, etc.)
*Easy Dot Art Madala Rock Painting – You can always use the techniques on paper or any surface (bottle, can, frisbee)

Monday 5/4 – Photos of the Week: Shape & Texture
Directions: This week we will be focusing on two of the four Elements of Photography: Shape and Texture.
Shape: Isolating a subject’s unique shape is an effective way to create an image with dramatic impact. Try shooting directly upwards and finding unusual shapes outlined against the sky. Don’t forget — negative space counts, too! The “blank” areas in a photograph can be just as important to the composition of your final product.
Texture (how something looks like it might feel): It can be found on every object or surface. Zoom in closely enough on almost anything and it will start to look really interesting. The trick is to decide exactly what level of magnification creates the most effective image. Remind yourself to point the camera at subjects you wouldn’t ordinarily pay attention to: even surfaces that from a distance appear ugly or dirty can be revealed as startling, and even beautiful.
Look at the sample photos I’ve taken. I tried to get up close, use different lighting, and find different textures and shape in the things that were right here at my desk. Do you see shapes and textures you’d never noticed before?
Your Task: Take a look around you looking for interesting shapes and textures in your own world. Take several photos from different angels; up close, eye-level, from below, and lighting; from above to create shadows, from behind for a silhouette. Turn in your best examples of Shape and Texture (one of each; more if you want to share).
Reflection: Tell me about the photos you are submitting. What angles and lighting techniques did you try? Where did you find examples of shape and texture around you? What are you sharing with me, do the things you are photographing have special meaning to you?
Friday 5/1 – Drawing Choices
Monday 4/27 – Photos of the Week: Lines & Pattern
Directions: You’ve been drawing using lines. Lines and patterns can be seen everywhere we look from the fluorescent lights in a classroom, to sidewalks we walk on, to the brickwork of the buildings around us. This week we will be focusing on two of the four Elements of Photography: Line and Pattern (Shape and Texture are coming soon).
Line: Diagonal lines create a sense of motion and energy. Converging lines or Leading lines draw the eye toward a point.
Pattern: Repeated lines, geometric shapes, forms and colors everywhere around us.
Look at the sample photos I’ve taken while on a walk. You may have seen the images before while you were out and about, but now I want you to SEE the images with a new eye. Do you see leading lines? Repeated patterns and shapes?
Your Task: Take a look around you looking for patterns and line in your own world. Take several photos from different angels. lighting, up close and far away. Turn in your best examples of Line and Pattern (one of each; more if you want to share).
Reflection: Tell me about the photos you are submitting. What angles did you try? Where did you find examples of line and pattern around you? Did you get to take a walk? Are you seeing objects differently now?

Photo of the Day – Monday, 4/20: Primary Color
Watch Video First: https://youtu.be/7ZVyNjKSr0M
Every painting or photograph that stops us in our tracks with its layers of beauty and brilliant colors can be broken down into three simple elements: red, yellow, and blue. These primary colors can combine to make secondary colors, and black and white can be added to make an incredible number of tertiary mixtures, but red, yellow, and blue are colors in their purest form. For this assignment I want to see photographs that celebrate these three colors. There are no specific rules as far as how much of the color should fill the frame, and I will not be using an eyedropper to test the purity of the color, but when someone looks at the photo, his or her first thought should be of the color. I would avoid having secondary or complementary colors in the photo, but as long as the red, yellow, or blue is dominant, that is fine.
Reflection: Describe your photo and tell me how primary color is the focus of your photo.
Paper Plane Design
Students will use the links and worksheet provided below for a preliminary exposure to working with 3D Design. The purpose is to learn how different design elements effect product design outcomes. The objective is to build 3 distinct paper airplanes from the templates provided in the linked websites, make measurable observations, adjust and/or modify the designs based on those measures, in order to achieve better flight results.
Students may choose any design to meet the 3 plane requirements, and will complete 3 trial flights for each. Trials are recorded with a final report being completed using the Trial’s Template from the link below.
Reports are to be saved as PDFs and uploaded to student’s ePortfolios for grading.

3D Hand
1) Watch Video Link and Look at my examples
2) Draw 3D Hand – you can use any medium (pencil, crayon, pens, etc.)
3) Take Photo & Upload with explanation of medium you chose and how you thought it went. Would you do something different if you did it again?
Extension: Try using the 3D technique on another object, like I did with the heart
