Hi Everyone,

The sunshine looks like it’s finally here and I hope you all were able to get out and enjoy it. Five items of note for this week.

• Annual Safety Inspection – As Crystal said in her email earlier, we are having our annual safety inspection this Monday. Please make sure there are no safety rules being broken in your spaces. The most frequent violations are:

• Extension cords and/or power strips plugged into power strips
• Not having a 3 ft. entrance in the doorways and hallways being free of tripping hazards.
• Objects (chairs, boxes, crates, etc…) in front of a fire extinguishers, fire alarm pull stations or electrical panels.

• Student Computer Imaging – CIS is gearing up for student laptop imaging. Please let me know by the end of the week if there is anything that you’d like to see new or different from the current laptop image.

• 4J Blends/Mixed-Grade Planning – I wanted to let people know that I met with Marlee Litten last week about district support for schools with blended classes and best practices for teaching core areas of reading and math. There are several other schools in the same boat as us, so the Instruction Department is working on a plan for supporting schools before the new school year starts, so individual schools and teachers are left to reinvent the wheel. The plan may include extended contract time for trainings on teaching blends and possibly time for teachers to simply team plan. 4J SDSs are currently working with Salem-Kaiser staff, who have a number of elementary schools with blends, and to learn what best practices they have developed for meeting standards. More information on this to come soon.

• OAKS Ending and Spring easyCBM Benchmark Beginning 5/21 – 6/8 – As shared in earlier announcements, OAKS testing is ending this Thursday. Next Monday, easyCBM Spring Benchmark testing begins. Diane and Joanne have ordered copies of the individual reading assessment materials for teachers. Substitutes are again available for teachers who would like to have someone cover their class while you test and enter scores. Also remember if you want someone to enter scores for you, you need to have those to me by Friday, June 1st. All scores must be entered by June 8th.

• VIDEO – Change the World in 5 Minutes – Everyday at School – Here’s an inspirational video from a primary school in Australia that asks the question, “Can a bunch of school kids really change the world in five minutes a day?” This class of primary school kids demonstrate over the course of a week that it only takes five minutes a day to make a positive impact—from recycling to planting fruit and veg and telling jokes.

Nineteen and a half more days! Have a good one!
