Hello Staff,

Hard to believe it, but there are only 29 and a half students days left this school year.

Eight items of note for this week.

• OAKS Ends May 17th – The OAKS window closes in 3 weeks on Friday, May 17th. At this point, there is no reason that this window will be extended by ODE unless the OAKS system crashes between now and then. Please try and finish up testing prior to the last couple days of the window closing. Waiting until the last day or so often does not go well with student absences or other unforeseen circumstances that may prevent them from finishing up.

• IIPM Data Team Meeting Next Week – A repeat of sorts from last week due to the reschedule, but Thursday next week will be our final IIPM Data Team Meeting of the year. On Thursday, May 10th, subs will be coming to classroom at the times below, so plan accordingly for them. Let me know if you have any questions.

8:00-8:50 Corridor K/1

8:55-9:55 Corridor 2/3

9:55-10:10 Break

10:10-10:50 Corridor 4/5

10:55-11:45 YG 2/3

11:45-12:25 Lunch

12:30-1:20 YG K/1

1:25-2:15 YG 4/5

• Optional Upstart Crow Dance Assembly, Friday – It’s been on the calendar for months now, but when I contacted Upstart Crow last week to confirm, I have yet to hear back. I’ll everyone know once it is official and confirmed. In any case, the optional 30 minute dance assembly will be in the gym this Friday for classes who would like to attend. Corridor’s assembly will be from 8:30-9:00 and YG’s assembly will be from 9:20-9:50.

• Tsunami Preparedness Month – Last month was Tsunami Preparedness Month and the Oregon Office of Emergency Management has produced a CD Rom titled “Tsunami Teacher”. It provides training on preparing for and responding to a Tsunami. If anyone is interested in borrowing a copy, please let me know (and don’t ask me why they waited this long to send it out).

• Jane Higdon & O Heroes Fun Run for Girls and Mom on Sunday, May 13th – Rachel Farkas asked that principals share the attached flyer for the Jane Higdon & O Heroes Run For Girls and Moms on Mother’s Day, Sunday May 13th! She says it should be a great way to kick on Mother’s and Mentors Day for girls and women of all ages! Please pass on to anyone that might be interested in a fun run to both celebrate and honor girls and women!

• New TED-Ed site offers video lessons for students TED-Ed last Wednesday launched an educational website featuring lessons based on its original animated videos for grades K-12. Each lesson includes a three- to eight-minute video, multiple-choice quizzes, open-ended questions and links to related information. In addition, teachers can choose to “flip” the video and create customized lessons. TED-Ed’s Lessons Worth Sharing beta version currently features video lessons on numerous topics.

• Ideas for encouraging students to read this summer – Here’s a cool blog post from a 6th grade teacher with ideas encouraging students to read this summer. There are some cool ideas here that would work well in the older grades, like giving students lots of opportunities for students to recommend books or having students make lists of books they would like to read over the break.

• African-American children more optimistic on race than whites – A white child and a black child look at the exact same picture of two students on the playground but what they see is often very different and what they say speaks volumes about the racial divide in America. Read this fascinating article to learn more.

Have a good week, everyone!
