Hi Everyone,

It was great to see so many staff members turn out for each school’s respective events this past weekend. The YG Auction & Dinner and the Corridor Car Show & Carnival were both fabulous successes! YG, on Saturday, also performed with the Suzuki Strings Program at the UO, but I was unable to attend that event and was instead going between the Car Show and the Latino Families Home Visit Conference next door at North.

Six items of note for this week:

• End-of-Year Salad Themed Staff Potluck, Thursday, June 16th at 11:45 – Now that we’re back to a half-day for the last day of school, we can bring back our traditional staff luncheon and will be our opportunity to say goodbye to staff who will be leaving us and will also a chance for us to celebrate the end of another school year. So after kids leave, we’ll have a get together where staff should bring a favorite type of salad. I’ll put a sign-up in each staff room. We’ll also need some folks to bring chips and drinks too.
• Year End Check Lists – A repeat from last week, be sure you have completed everything on the attached Year End Check List before you leave for the summer. Make sure that everything in your room is boxed or stored in a manner that can easily moved into the hallway during summer cleaning.
• Fire Drill, Wednesday at 8:40 – Our final fire drill of the year will be this Wednesday at 8:40. Please plan accordingly.
• Hightened Security – If you didn’t see the news story about an attack that occurred after hours at Willagillespie last week, Risk Management asked principals to remind staff to be careful, be aware of the need for heightened security, and to report any suspicious behavior.
• Grading Day – It is the school district’s expectation that teachers will report to school on grading days. Working from home on report cards is not allowed. Sorry. : (
• Diane Ravitch Op-Ed – Here is an interesting Op-Ed from the NYTimes last week, written by Diane Ravitch, who was one of the key authors and proponents of No Child Left Behind. What’s interesting is her complete reversal when it comes to the reforms she once touted and now largely condemns. Her new book on this topic, The Death and Life of the Great American School System: How Testing and Choice Are Undermining Education, is on my summer reading list. I’ve heard her book (and it also seems true for this article) doesn’t present many solutions, but it does present an clear pictures of the challenges schools face and also a clear picture of the types of school reforms that DO NOT work.

And wow, it’s hard to believe there are only two weeks left!
