Hello Everyone,

Six items of note for this week:

• Friday Math Spring Extravaganza – This Friday, the school district is holding math a workshop for teachers at Chavez Elementary School in the morning (K-2 & SPED from 8:00-11:00) and afternoon (3-5 from 12:15-3:30). Originally, this was going to be a training on the new math adoption, but since that is not happening, I believe this day will be spent addressing how we can meet the new math standards using the current math curriculums. REMEMBER to bring your teachers guide and two different color highlighters. See Janis’ email for details.
• Technology Links – On my blog are all of the links (plus a couple more) that were shared at last Monday’s Technology Sharing Session. http://blogs.4j.lane.edu/chinn/2009/03/30/links-and-passwords/
• TILT Workshop – The TILT Center is offering a wide variety of workshops for all levels. Click on the link below for the full list of offerings, details, and registration. http://www.4j.lane.edu/workshops/
• Free Equity Presentations to Educators – James Lowen, author of “Lies My Teacher Told Me: Everything Your High School History Textbook Got Wrong”, is giving a free presentation to educators on Wednesday, April 29th, thanks to Pacific University and Eugene 4J’s Equity Committee. Attached (loewen09-final-flier.pdf)is a flyer with details. I’ve read his book and found it fascinating. I’m hopping to attend myself.
• Poetry Contest – A poetry contest for students grades 3-12, with prizes, including a $500 US Savings Bond, is happening through April 30th. Details can be found at this website: http://www.libraryofpoetry.com/
• Free Weather Presentation by Dave Sweeney – Dave Sweeney, the former chief meteorologist at KOIN-TV and KEZI-TV in the 80s (and now chief meteorologist at OregonLive.com), is offering a free presentation to classroom on the “Wild World of Weather”. The presentation cover the basics of clouds (formation and types), the water cycle and weather forecasting but also highlight severe weather safety, some wonderful weather photos and a peek behind the green screen into the “magic of TV weather”. He’s a former Junior High school science teacher with a masters degree in science education. If you are interested in a presentation, let me know and I will forward his contact information.

Have a good week everyone!
