We got through our first week of school and it was great seeing a school full of kids again!

Eight items of note for this week:

• Eugene School District 4J Online Safety Training – This past week you should have received an email from Patrick Hughes regarding a new required training of all staff regarding child abuse through SafeSchools.com. The email you most need to pay attention to is the one from Safe Schools with the subject line “Eugene School District 4J Online Safety Training”. All staff must complete the online course by December 31st. The estimated time for the two tests are 45 and 30 minutes. However, I did it this weekend and it didn’t take me that long. There’s a nice fast forward button that allows you to move the videos along more quickly if you can read the bullet points faster than the narrator reads them. Let me know if you have any questions about this mandatory training.
• Bus Safety Video – The state requires all students to receive instruction on bus safety by the end of December. To meet the requirement, we can order a bus and driver to come out one day to provide instruction to classes. Teachers can also meet the requirement by showing an approved bus safety video. Transportation has uploaded one approved video to this website: http://ns.lane.edu/?q=node/106 Let me know by the end of the week if you would like to have a bus driver led training. If you are showing a video to meet the requirement, let me know the title of the video you showed and the date you showed it. Let me know if you have any questions.
• Safety Week – Last year we did not hold a “Safety Week” due to the delays on the security fencing, but I’d like one this year the final week of September (which also overlaps with October one day, which will take care of our required monthly fire drills for both months). During this week I’d like to practice the following drills with students:

⁃ Monday, 9-27 – Fire Drill, 10:40
⁃ Tuesday, 9-28 – Lock Down, 9:00
⁃ Wednesday, 9-29 – Directed Response, 9:30 COR to gym, 9:50 YG to cafeteria
⁃ Thursday, 9-30 – Room Clear, time decided by teachers
⁃ Friday, 10-1 – Earthquake/Fire Drill, 8:40

Remember to plan with your teaching partner when you will do your Room Clear drill on Thursday, September 30th. The other drills all have set times. We’ll review the procedures at a staff meeting prior to this event, but I wanted to let folks know these dates and times to help with your lesson planning. All of these drills are listed “Emergency Procedures Manual” which is the rainbow tabbed binder that should be hanging in every classroom. Please let me know if you do not have a manual or if you have any questions.
• School Reps for EEF Gala – The evening of October 7th at LCC is year’s EEF Back-to-School Celebration with Lynn and Dave Frohnmayer and Judy Wenger, which will feature student musicians and a game show everyone can play. EEF hopes to have every school represented and has offered two free tickets (otherwise $50 each) for a staff member and a student. Please let me know if you are willing to attend this event with a student for us. Thank you!
• Walk and Bike to School Day – Since neither school has a PE specialist, this may be something we let go of, but if there is anyone interested in taking it on, there is a $200 stipend available for prizes and incentives to promote the event. Attached is a flyer on how to get the stipend.
• 4J Math Website – This link was shared with folks at the math workshop a couple weeks ago, but incase you lost it, this link will take you to Investigations, enVision and Connected Math where the math CD-ROM’s have been loaded. Some of the elementary enVision files run directly from the server. These are Flash videos and not intended to have a classroom of students accessing at the same time. Most of the other elementary information and all of the middle school information will need to be installed on to your computer. http://www.4j.lane.edu/tilt/mathserver
• Izzy’s Pizza Gift Certificate Awards – Izzy’s Pizza is offering free Academic Achievement Awards for students, similar to Pizza Hut’s Book-It-Awards, which rewards kids with a free Izzy’s Classic Buffet. Izzy’s will give you the gift certificate/awards for a projects such as reading a certain number of books, completion of difficult assignments, meeting class attendance goals, and such. If you would like to start a reward program with these awards, contact Nancy George at (541) 926-8693 or nancyg@izzyspizza.com
• Young Rembrandts – As an FYI, there will be an after school drawing club Tuesdays and Thursdays in the Corridor Library for students of both schools. It’s a fee based program, but it’s a neat looking program, is fairly inexpensive, and is another enrichment opportunity we can tell new parents that we offer.. If you’re curious, here’s their website: http://www.youngrembrandts.com/

Have a dynamite week, everyone!
