Eight items of note for this week:

• Turn Off Week (Formerly TV Turn-Off Week – TV Turnoff Week has been modified to include videos and computers – hence the name change to Turnoff Week. For more information of this upcoming event, you can visit these two websites:

• April 16th, Classified Furlough Day – This is a reminder that 12, 11, and 10 month classified employees have a furlough day on Friday, April 16, 2010.
• April 16th Math Professional Development – Friday, April 16th is a no-student day and is half PD, half planning day for teachers. There will be a math workshop for teachers (classroom and SPED) held at Chavez. There are two session, one for grades K-2 from 8:00-11:30 and one session for grades 3-5 and SPED staff from 12:00-3:30. See the attachment for details.
• Earth Day Next Week, April 22 – If you’d like to acknowledge Earth Day, it’s next week on April 22nd. Many online teacher resource can be found on this website.
• Earthquake Awareness Month – April is Earthquake Awareness Month throughout the country. Attached is a flyer with information about earthquakes. The second page has some to some links to educational activities, one link is geared towards mainly elementary students and the other to teachers at most levels. Also attached are some Drop and Cover posters from FEMA in English and Japanese.
• Scholastic Summer Reading – Summer may seem a ways off (it’s closer than you think), but there is a an attempt by Scholastic to break the world record record for minutres from kids reading four or more books. There is also a live webcast to kick off the event on the scholastic website here: http://www.scholastic.com/summer
• Science Celebration and Science Fair – Lane ESD will host student science projects May 3-4 for public viewing. Projects should address the dimensions of the Oregon Scientific Inquiry scorning Guide and be self supporting for display. All projects will receive recognition and medals. Projects could also be entered into the Oregon State Fair 2010 Science Competition scheduled for May 15, 2010 in Salem. • Lane County Historical Museum School Tours – Lane County Historical Museum offers free one-hour tours to elementary age students during the school year, September through mid-June. Visit their website for details on the various tours offered.
• YouTube – Pedro Noguera on Equity in Schools – Pedro Noguera, executive director of the Metropolitan Center for Urban Education, discusses the term equity and the forces that sometimes prevent schools from providing children with equitable outcomes. “Schools are set up to be the equalizers of opportunity,” he says.
