Hello All!

It was great to have everyone back last week and I hope everyone had an enjoyable three-day weekend!

Eight items of note for this week.

• Welcome Janelle Mak, New Part-Time Learning Center Teacher – Please welcome our new .25 Learning Center teacher, Janelle Mak! Janelle just completed her Special Education licensure and came with high marks from Marilyn Nersesian after a stint at Summer School. Janelle will be teaching in the afternoons out in the portable. Please make her feel welcome as she joins our schools!

• Roving Sub Schedule Update – I’m waiting to hear back from the district regarding when and how many roving subs we will get. Hopefully, I’ll get an answer Tuesday and can send a schedule to teachers soon after.

• easyCBM Testing Window Extended (9/14-10/2) – The district is extending the testing window to help with the time crunch. Between staff now taking over testing duties, adequate time for data entry, and time to address and any bugs around newly imaged computers, this was a good decision.

• easyCBM Training Manual, Fall 2009 Guidelines, & Video Tutorials – The easyCBM Training Manual, Fall Testing Guidelines, along with some good video tutorials on how to administer the tests can be found on the link below. http://www.4j.lane.edu/testing/easycbm

• Security Fencing Update – The fencing was supposed to be completed before student arrived, but upon receipt of the panels, Facilities discovered that the wrong panels had been shipped. The new panels will arrive on the 11th and will be installed at all the schools the following week, with the gates being fabricated and installed by the end of the month.

• EEF Grants Deadline 10/5 – October 5th is the deadline for EEF grant proposals. Click on the link below for more information. Each school is asked to send two proposals for $500 each and two proposals for $2,000 each. http://www.eef.lane.edu/grants2009/application09.htm

• Obama Education Speech – You may be aware of the controversy surrounding the president’s address to school children, airing this Tuesday, but given the controversy, I’d ask teachers, if you are showing a recording of the speech, to give families prior notification before showing it to students. I’ve already fielded several emails and phone calls regarding the speech and wanted teachers to be aware of the how some of our community is feeling about the address.

• H1N1 Prevention – Beginning on the first day of school, instruct every student on how to prevent the spread of flu and other viruses. Teach proper hand hygiene and respiratory etiquette. Talk about other ways viruses can be easily transmitted, such as sharing personal items (e.g. drinks, food, utensils). Teach students the four main ways to prevent the spread of flu:

o Wash your hands.

o Cover your cough.

o Stay home when sick.

o Get your family vaccinated.

An optional resource for teachers, the state of Oregon has developed a K-12 curriculum for flu prevention, with materials for grades K–3, 4–5, 6–8 and 9–12. http://www.flu.oregon.gov/DHS/ph/acd/flu/schoolschildcare.shtml#Fighter

The students are almost here! See you all Tuesday!
