• Year End Checklist – With the school year winding down, I’ll be putting the end of the year checklist in mailboxes early this week. This is a list of tasks to complete before you leave for your well deserved summer vacation. It’s pretty much the same as in the past, but please let me know if you have any questions. I’ll also be posting a sign-up sheet in the office for staff sign up for checkout times.

• Staff Technology Summer Checkout – Related to the above items, if you are planning to take home any of your technology (laptop, iPads, etc.) over the summer, be sure to fill out and turn in a signed copy of the 4J Technology Equipment Checkout Contract  (PDF) to the office. Peggy will collect the forms before we leave for the Summer.

• 2015-2016 Class Lists Due Next Week – Class lists are due to the office Tuesday (That’s tomorrow.). If your grade level hasn’t done it already, please complete them and turn them into my box on Tuesday. We would like specialist to be able to review them by the end of the week.

• Physical Education Expansion K-8 (PEEK-8) Grant – Not much of an update yet, but I did want to let people know that I’ve been working with Kay Fullerton, the 4J Grant Writer, on applying for  all year PE again. ODE has yet to announce PEEK-8 grants for next year and we’re waiting to hear back from them as to what will be the timeline for applications.

• United to End Racism Events – 4J is presenting an exciting series of events this week that are going to be happening in our schools and community between May 26 – 29. Please see the attached flyers for a community event, an in-house event and a visit with Gyasi Ross. I will be there and have been involved organizing them. Come join me in the discussion.

• What Do You Do With A Student Who Fidgets? – Here’s a recent story from NPR that Rachel shared with me. It’s actually a follow up to a report they did on a small study in which students with ADHD performed better on memory tasks when they were allowed to spin and move around in a swiveling chair. Following that story, they got hundreds of comments, tweets and emails with suggestions for fidgets, including one quite clever one involving wrapping bike inner tubes around the legs of a chair, allowing kids to bounce their legs during learning.

• How has technology changed the face of learning? – Technology already has changed K-12 education forever, asserts Matthew Lynch, dean of the School of Education at Virginia Union University. In this commentary, he writes that technology has revolutionized classroom collaboration, information gathering, remote learning and teacher preparation.

• Bilingual Students Need Support in Their Native Language

Dual-language programs can help English-language learners achieve proficiency in a new language and foster confidence in their language skills, writes Joe Levitan, director of educational programming at the Sacred Valley Project in Cusco, Peru. In this commentary, he recalls two ELL students and two different approaches to language learning.
