Replacing the Read Naturally Server

The server really crashed this time. It didn’t respond to the keyboard (no caps light), mouse, or anything. Then it was unplugged.

I was unable to restart it any way except for Safe Mode. It would not boot to an external hard drive, CD, or anything else. I ran fsck several times until it was clean. I could not repair permissions, even when booted to another computer. Disc Utility would return an error message and quit. I also reset the PMU.

To set up the new server, I swapped out for another 600/G3 with 384 SDRAM and 40 gig hard drive. I installed our 10.3.9 clone on it.
I was able to boot it in Target mode and copied the RNSE files and folders to another computer.

Here are the steps I took to setup the new RNSE server.
1. Did a fresh install from the original discs, including all the stories and license numbers. (Note: license numbers on the CD case rub off! Don’t lose the paper hard copy.) I used the same IP address as the previous installation/computer.
2. Downloaded and installed the 2.0.3a update from the Reading Naturally site.

3. Restarted the computer.
4. Followed the steps from the Read Naturally site to locate and replace our database files. with the ones that I had backed upt to the hard drive.

5. Confirmed that all permissions were set correctly and restarted the computer.

6. Plugged the computer into the same port as the original server.
7. Registered the new computer as a server.

8. Went to System Preferences/Network/Built-in Ethernet/Configure. Changed TCP/IP Configure iPv4 to “Using DHCP” ad clicked on “Renew DHCP Lease.” The correct IP address appeared.
9. In System Preferences/Energy, changed the Sleep settings to “never”, the display settings to “15 min” and checked the box marked “Put the hard disc(s) to sleep when possible.

10. The server is now up and running with all of our records intact.
