I Funny: A Middle School Story by James Patterson and Chris Grabenstein

by on Feb.09, 2014, under Bullying, Humorous, Illustrated, Real life, Sam's Reviews

funnyWho would like tho book? Boys or girls, grades 4 to 7, who like puns and jokes that make you laugh in spite of yourself.

The goods on this book: Jamie Grimm has a tough life. He’s in middle school, he’s in a wheelchair, he lives with a new family in a new city, and his new brother is the biggest and meanest bully in his middle school. How does he handle it all? By telling jokes. Really lame jokes, such as the one about what the teacher said during roll call one day:
“Are you chewing gum, young man?”
“No, I’m Jamie Grimm.”
Jamie, it turns out, has a talent for telling jokes and an obsession with learning everything having to do with comedy. He also has two geeky friends, an uncle who combines yo-yoing with cooking, and a couple of girls who show an interest in him. When Jamie secretly enters a local comedy contest, the pressure is on to be funny. Throughout this book, the jokes come fast and furiously, both in the text and in the entertaining drawings. It is very difficult to argue with Jamie’s self-assessment: “I funny.”

smekdayReview by Silas L.

Who would like this book? Anyone above the age of about 8, only because of the long story and somewhat-complex words. It is sort of a sci-fi plot but you don’t need to like sci-fi to like this book.

The good on this book: The True Meaning of Smekday is the story of a young girl writing a story for a time capsule. She is recounting the Alien Invasion that happened in 2013 for future people. She starts with the story of her beloved mother, who was stolen by the Alien force, the Boov. When they make themselves present with their superior weapons, they force every human into one part of their country. On the way to find her mom she meets a Boov, who isn’t as bad as he looks. Follow Gratuity; her cat, Pig; and the Boov, J.Lo, as they travel across the country and back, visit Happy Mouse Kingdom in Orlando, and meet a new Alien Presence who are the most feared in the universe…

Who would like this book? Anyone who has read the rest of the books of Diary of a Wimpy Kid and loves to read about Greg’s failures and triumphs!

The goods on this book: This book is hilarious! Greg starts out alone with no friends, not even Rowley, who now has a girlfriend and has no time for Greg! Greg struggles to find friends and has to start at square one: Fregley! He tries to turn him into shape, like Rowley, and ends up making Fregley “Most Popular” in the yearbook! This book has a lot to offer, plus a few laughs and fist bumps (possibly) and, especially, an awesome ending! Read more to find out how it ends!

Wonkenstein: The Creature From My Closet Book 1 by Obert Skye

by on Jan.13, 2014, under Humorous, Real life, Student Reviews, Supernatural

wonkReview by Spencer D.

Who would like this book? Anyone who would like to read about supernatural things coming from your closet, or things that happen to kids that change their lives!

The goods on this book:  The main setting is in a cul-de-sac where all of Robert’s friends live and play together, either at one of their houses, or the island, or next to Robert’s house in an empty lot. As you heard, the main character’s name is Robert (his mom calls him Ribert) and the conflict is his closet! When he was little, his closet didn’t have a door. His dad, a playground “seller” (I think) goes to a garage sale and gets him a closet door (which is quite heavy and hard to open) with a golden handle, with some bearded man’s face on it. (Robert calls him Beardy.) Robert wanted to turn his closet into a chemical lab, but his parents said “No.” He had to make his own chemicals with random things around the house. When he grew older, he would make his room messy, like a lot of people. He would stuff everything into it, and the “chemicals” with the books, toys, and everything would mix together to bring weird creatures into his world that change his life forever!

brotherReview by Spencer D.

Who would like this book: Anyone who loves mischief, and wants to read the rest of the series of Middle School: The Worst Years Of My Life!

The goods on this book: This book, different than the other two before, is told by Rafe Katchadorian’s SISTER, and she tells us her story, which is quite sad, because everyone thinks she is JUST LIKE RAFE! The story progresses, and she learns that the Battle Of The Bands is up, but thinks her band, The Awesomes, aren’t ready. Of course, Rafe thinks differently, but he put their name down as We Stink! Things get crazy, and it involves a garage sale, and lots more. A group at her school called The Princesses are kind of RICH, so they treat everyone ELSE like they’re poor, or have horrible clothing. Read on, in this exciting, fast-paced book, about Middle School!
