lockdownReview by Seth C.

Who would like this book? People who like horror genres and old-fashioned super penitentiary insane jail escapes.

The goods on this book: Alex, a 15 year old, has a problem. He is in a penitentiary which is not a simple insane asylum but a mutant using asylum kids. Alex was a thief and a bully, but he never deserved what was coming to him. He and three other inmates try to escape the unbreakable prison which is miles upon miles underground. This book is insanely horrific. I give it a solid 10 on the horror factor. It is not for people who do not have a strong stomach, I would say.

Who would like this book? People who like post-apocalyptic subjects and books would love this book.

The goods on this book: Ashen Winter is the sequel to Ashfall. It starts out with Alex, the main character, and Darla. It has been about six months since the eruption. He and Darla made it to his Uncle Paul’s farm in Illinois. After six months of waiting, Alex and Darla convince his Uncle Paul to let them go back to Iowa to search for his mom and dad. On a highway Darla gets shot by cannibals called the Peckerwoods and Alex gets separated from her and he starts a journey to find her. I liked this book a lot!!! The suspense and cannibals bring it to a whole new level of horror. People who like post-apocalyptic subjects and books would love this book. I would give it 10/10 easily.

Who would like this book? People who are into post-apocalyptic books would like this one.

The goods on this book: Imagine a weekend with no parents or anything. Alex’s parents and sister went to his aunt and uncle’s farm about 100 miles away in Warren, Illinois. Alex is a kid who is based around computer games and books. Then the super volcano at Yellowstone National Park erupted, separating him from his family. Ashfall is about how Alex, a 15 year old, and a girl named Darla have to deal with death, and people who are raiding houses and are on the streets of Iowa after the eruption in Yellowstone. This book in my opinion was a good book for me. People who are into post-apocalyptic books would like this one. Even though the volcano is not due to erupt anytime soon, the volcano still could.

Who would like this book? People who like post-apocalyptic and zombie books would like this book.

The goods on this book: The Sacrifice is a book taking place in a modern London with one catch. London is overrun with zombies and the only survivors are children. Two of them are named Sam and The Kid, who are roughly ten or eleven. Sam and The Kid are searching for Sam’s sister Ella when they find a group of kids at a medieval tower. There they meet a teenager named Ed. He has a scar stretching the length of his face. Ed promises Sam that he will help him search for his sister. My thoughts on this book is that it is very excellent if you like post-apocalyptic and zombie outbreak books.

cityofbonesReview by Luna

Who would like this book? Girls and boys ages 14+ who enjoy supernatural stories mixed with biblical themes, demons, gore, romance, and humor.

The good on this book: City of Bones is the first book in the Mortal Instruments series. It follows Clary Fray, a petite redheaded girl from the East Coast who seems to live a normal life with her mother. All she knows of her father is that he died in a car crash, and that her mother still silently cries for him. When she goes to a supernatural club called Pandemonium with her best friend Simon, she sees crazy teenagers murdering a boy with blue hair. Frightened, she pursues the group, only to learn that they are Shadowhunters, people who fight demons and protect the earth from them. She learns that her mother has been lying to her about her entire existence, and that she is a Shadowhunter too. Clary falls in love with the flippant Jace, only to discover that they share something more than just being Shadowhunters. It’s funny, gripping, and action-packed, and a really great series.

Review by Kyle A.

Who would like this book? 10 year olds with A LOT of patience and both genders.

Why? The Baudelaires get to pick their guardian out of 4 towns in a pampflet that Mr. Poe has sitting on his desk. When they see the name VFD, they obviously pick that one. The entire town is obsessed with crows because there is an entire murder of crows that migrate around the entire town. They live with a man named Hector who lives under a tree that houses all of the birds in the evening, and every morning they find a couplet about where the Quagmires are hidden, which happens to be a huge golden crow fountain. More to come!

The Ersatz Elevator by Lemony Snicket

Review by Kyle A.

Who would like this book? Both genders, ages 10+.

Why?  Olaf is back and worse than ever! He has the Quagmires and is planning to get his hands on the Quagmire sapphires! Klaus and Violet Baudelaire are trying to figure out where the Quagmires are, and they get suspicious of the second elevator because it only has one button. They eventually make a rope to find out. The Baudelaires are trying to think of a plan when they Quagmires are suddenly gone, and they think Olaf took them away. He puts them in one of the things they are going to auction at the “in” auction. This book was just marvelously thrilling.

Who would like this book? Both male and female. I would say ages 10+. The genre is suspense and comedy.

Why?  The Baudelaire Orphans are being sent to Prufrock prepatory school, and there Vice Principal Nero mimics them. Their parents died in a terrible fire 6 books ago. They meet some orphans that are like them in every way. Their criminal uncle is back and still trying to steal the Baudelaire fortune.Olaf is trying to get the Baudelaire orphans expelled by making them run laps until dawn every single night. The Quagmires then intervene and try to act as the Baudelaire’s doubles so they can study for their exams in the morning, but something goes horribly wrong and the Quagmires are caught! This book was so suspenseful that I read it in one night.

The Austere Academy (Series of Unfortunate Events #5) by Lemony Snicket

Review by Matt L.

Who would like this book? People from ages 4th grade up to however long people live.

Why? This book is a terrible, funny pile of paper with two hard papers on each side. The B children go to an academy called the Austere Academy with a horrible Vice Principal named Nero who is fat and stuck up with horrible violin skills. All the children have to go through obstacle courses to survive this nightmare Academy. Luckily, the B children meet twins who are actually triplets. They are orphans and their parents died from a fire and their other sibling was in that fire and also perished. They all are suffering from a horrible time in this academy, especially with Carmelita Spats who is a student that is mean and gross and furious to be around. Count Olaf is back as a gym teacher named Coach Genguis who wears expensive athletic shoes and a turban but can’t cover up those same shiny eyes. He runs those poor orphans known as the B children to make them exhausted and then they are flunking. Read this book and find out how they get out of this nightmare.
