• Free Run, Jump Throw Activities for Youth – Here’s a fun free activity for kids ages 5-12 you could mention in your classroom newsletters or tell your students about. • Caring For Kids Initiative Will Be District-Wide Next Year: Did you know that the Caring For Kids Initiative is off to a great start this year?  The plan is to have the Developmental Studies Curriculum implemented in all elementary schools next Fall. Kristen still has our packet of material for teachers to use as resources and try out on a mini- pilot level.  Stop by the counseling office if you want to take a closer look at all that it entails. Also, here is a link to the outline of the Caring School Community (CSC) program.

• How Is Creativity Killed? – Here’s a very smart article from Yong Zhao, a recent addition to the UO College of Education, who thinks U.S. education risks importing China’s creativity gap by adopting test-centered curriculum, pedagogy, and policies. He’s also written a book I liked a lot on this topic, Catching Up or Leading the Way: American Education in the Age of Globalization.

Have an excellent week, everyone!

Joel

Spring UO Educational Foundations field students at Awbrey Park

A Message from Jeanne Hall:  We’re already planning for spring! The UO Educational Foundations undergraduate major is in need of at least 80 field experience placements in classrooms for the Spring term (April 1 – June 7, 2013)!

Please respond by Friday, February 15.

Our Educational Foundations field experiences include the following expectations:

1. The Ed Foundations undergraduate major fully prepares our students to apply to graduate elementary licensure programs, so it is not an undergraduate licensure program. Therefore, host teachers are not required to have a certain number of years teaching experience…just a positive learning environment!

2. The field experience student will assist in the classroom for 30 hours total (approx. 3 hr. block per week for 10 wks locally).

3. Field students are eager to assist individuals and small groups, under the direction of the host teacher. During the majority of the time, students will need to assist or observe the children during instruction versus doing paperwork. Your field student will let you know of any specific assignment or observation for a course.

4. We ask that only one university student (field experience, practicum, or student teacher) be assisting at a given time frame.  However, you may request 2 field experience students if they each have their own time slot.

5. Field students will not be designing or teaching work samples, so there is no monetary compensation for host teachers. The host teacher is only asked to initial the student’s hourly log and fill out a very brief one-page evaluation of the field student at the end of the term. We believe your classroom will benefit from having an aspiring future educator as your consistent assistant!

With their varying schedules, most of our EdF juniors could be available on any day of the week, except they will not be available on Tuesday or Thursday afternoons.

If you are interested in hosting an Educational Foundations field experience student, please email Jeanne Hall with the following information: <jmhall@uoregon.edu>

1. Your name, grade, school, and email.

2. Your preferred days and 3-hr time blocks for those days each week for the Spring term.

3. The type of classroom setting you have (general ed., Title I, ELD, etc.)

4. If you wish to have 1 or 2 field experience students.

Article Link of the Week:

7 Essential Principles of Innovative Learning– I really like this article.  It applies to much of the work we are currently undertaking.

Bobble Rules:

Teachers, please remember to review Bobble Rules with students. You should have a presentation that goes over the decided rules in the classroom. We have students who are creating alliances and not including students. This needs to be addressed beyond the rules.  Remind them that Mr. Lavin could end bobble if these non inclusive behaviors continue.
Valentine’s Day Festivities- Some guidelines.
Here is the guideline we give to parents around balloons and flowers.  We will be following these guidelines on Thursday. Please understand that they will not be delivered to classrooms as it is distracting. Parents just received this information in the newsletter. I will remind them again this weekend.

Balloon and Flower Deliveries at School

Are you considering sending something special, like flowers or balloons, to school to celebrate your child’s birthday, Valentine’s Day or another event?  These deliveries interrupt classroom instruction and student learning.  They can also, unknowingly, hurt feelings of other students less fortunate.  If you still plan on sending something, we wanted to share with you our procedure for deliveries:

  • All deliveries will be kept in the office.  The office staff will do their best to contact your student, at the end of their school day, to pick up their special deliveries.  We do need to caution you that pressing student issues will take priority over such announcements.
  • Balloons and flowers are not allowed on the bus.  Please make alternate arrangements for transportation home, if your child is a bus rider.

In  addition, I caution you about any snacks or candy given out on Valentine’s Day. Please make sure you are following Health and Wellness guidelines in classrooms that day.  Thanks,

Have a good weekend,

Joel

TAG Trainings on Video: You may recall that I asked that teachers watch the TAG Videos. Please make sure you have completed this by April 1st, the day after Spring Break. These can be found in my Teaching and Learning Page on this blog. The required videos are posted on the page. I will put a sign in sheet in the staff lounge this week for completion.

• Social Committee Meeting: Are you on the social committee? It’s time for us to plan a fun activity that we can all enjoy together. We will meet Friday afternoon at 7:30 AM in the staff lounge. If you cannot make the committee send me ideas via email or come by my office. Let’s get this party started.

• Sense-making and MultiplicationHere’s a link to the video that Raquel mentioned at Friday’s training. The goal of the lesson in the video is for students to see how 1 digit multiplication helps with 2 and 3 digits too. It’s a 13 minute video that’s worth throwing up on your classroom screen one afternoon while you’re doing some after school prep work.

• Title I Communication Blog from Suzy Price This blog contains helpful information pertaining to resources, reminders, upcoming events/deadlines, and more! It can be accessed by simply clicking on the link here. There is a February update post.

Teaching compassion and empathyHere is a video about teaching children love and compassion. It is a from a video series called Children Full of Life. The sense of community and trust this teacher has built with his 4th grade class is truly inspirational.

• Resources to teach students about African American history This blog post includes several resources to help educators address Black History Month(February). Included among the six teaching tools recommended are resources that focus on February’s theme of “At the Crossroads of Freedom and Equality: The Emancipation Proclamation and the March on Washington.” They suggest interactive resources and timelines that focus on African-American heritage, the Civil Rights movement and other topics. There’s also a good link to a Teaching Tolerance page on the “Dos and Don’ts of Teaching Black History Month.”

• Public Works Day, May 17th The City of Eugene invites classes to attend Public Works Day on Thursday, May 16th. Open house hours are 8:30 − 3:00 at the Public Works Yard, 1820 Roosevelt Boulevard. See the attached flyer and the link for further information. If you visit their website there is an online registration form, or you can fill out the old fashioned paper version here.

• 3 things that keep poor kids out of the sciences In this Scientific American post, biologist Danielle Lee describes her experience coaching poor kids in St. Louis on science fair projects — an activity that often becomes a stepping stone to a career in the sciences. But, for the kids Lee met, intelligence and a good idea aren’t enough to overcome the institutional barriers working against them. This is how discrimination happens.
Have a good week!

Here are the big items for the week:

• Staffing Timeline and Survey – The typical staffing timeline is being changed this year to more accurately project enrollment, taking into account open enrollment with out-of-district transfers. Principals were notified last Friday that we will receive staffing allocations April 12th and will need to turn in completed staffing plans to HR by April 25th. Below is a survey for staff to complete to give me there preferences and ideas for next year. This year the district is facing $21 million dollars in cuts ($10-11 million of that being offset by onetime funding sources, leaving about a $10 million hole to fill). In addition, our enrollment is currently projected lower than the 465 of 2012-2013 projection. It is likely that there will be staffing reductions given these indicators.

Click here to begin: 2013-2014 Staffing Survey at Awbrey Park

I believe in getting a lot of input from staff about planning for the next year. I’d like to hear from all staff, both classified and certified. All answers will be kept confidential. We will have more in-depth discussions as a staff regarding next year’s staffing plan, but this is a place to start that will help me create some draft plans once we do receive our staffing allocations. It is important that each employee reply to this survey so I know your perspective. Please reply to the survey on the Google Drive Survey. Please complete surveys by Monday, February 25th. I am always available to talk about this in person too. Please come by to talk over ideas or share new ones.

• Feb. 1st Awbrey Park PD Day, 12:30-3:30 – Math Facts Mastery Within an Investigative Framework  –  This Friday we’re teaming up with Howard for a training with Chris Castillero, the new Associate Director of Curriculum and Professional Development. We’ll be meeting at the Ed Center auditorium from 12:30-3:30. The 8:00-12:00 will be your time for planning. Classified staff are welcome to attend, but if you are not attending, be sure to connect with your primary cooperating teacher and make a plan for how you can best use this time.

• Taking It Up Group to reschedule (Febraury 5th): With the grading week and other heavy work demands there was low turnout for the CFEE Taking It up Meeting. I would like to reset this meeting for Tuesday, February 5th at 7:15 in the staff lounge. Breakfast will be provided. I have a Jon Saphier meeting that day but will meet with our equity team and interested staff at school before heading to the Ed Center. Also, there will be a CFEE Taking it up training in the last week in February. If you could not make the event  in October, then let’s get you scheduled to go to this session.

• Social Committee Dues – Please remember to turn in your social committee dues to Melinda. Participation in this committee helps us support each other in major life events and just overall to have a little fun with each other.

• Fire Drill, Monday at 1:05 – As long as it is not raining, we’ll hold our January Fire Drill this Monday at 1:05. Please plan accordingly.

• School Choice Week – Just a reminder that this week is School Choice Visitation Week #1. We have a few families already signed up for tours (mostly at the younger grades), so don’t be surprised if you see me walking visitors around the building this week. We had great reception at Saturday’s School Showcase. I truly appreciate having Melissa, Melody, and Sarah G. there to assist.  In addition, Claire and Melinda worked very hard on our new poster and our tri-fold pamphlet. Stay tuned for more upbeat marketing of our awesome school in the coming weeks.

• Will Your Black History Month Be Memorable? – Black History Month, which begins February 1st, dates back to 1926 when educator and historian Carter G. Woodson started a week-long observance in February, the birth month of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. The event was expanded to a month in 1976 by President Gerald Ford. This year’s theme for Black History Month is “At the Crossroads of Freedom and Equality: The Emancipation Proclamation and the March on Washington.” The editors of this blog offer a list of online resources for educators teaching related topics to students. The Teaching Tolerance website also offers many excellent ideas resources for educators. Scholastic and BrainPop also have some related resources and classroom activities.

• Measuring the Quality of Math Instruction – Here’s a good one-page article reporting on the “Mathematical Quality of Instruction” tool (MQI) for evaluating K-8 mathematics teaching. It’s aim is to get teachers self-assessing and bringing more mathematical substance to students. Checkout the article to learn the five key components the MQI measurements of math instruction.

Have a great week, everyone!

Joel

• Math Report Card Guidelines – Remember to look on the District Math Server for report card guidelines on how to grade student math skills (since the report card was written for the old standards and we are teaching to the new standards). This year’s report card is unchanged, but next year’s report card, on the new eSIS (Synergy), will reflect the CCSS math clusters. Be aware that you cannot access this website at home unless you’re running VPN.

TAG Blanket Testing:  TAG_Blanket_test_2013 -Here is the Letter that Kerri Sage wrote about our TAG screening that is coming up. We will be in communication with Kerri over the coming weeks about when this happens at Awbrey Park. The 2nd grade team and those that have referred students to me about testing will compile a list and verify with parents about testing soon.

• School Board Invites Public Input on Long-Range Facilities Plan, Wednesday at 7:00 PM – The School Board is seeking public input on their long range facilities plan. Input will take place at 7:00 PM this Wednesday at the Ed Center during the regular School Board Meeting. Here’s a link to the facilities proposal on the 4J website. I will be there to support other schools in the North Region and Roosevelt who badly need upgrades/ replacements to their buildings. I will also advocate for security upgrades at Awbrey Park.

• UO Track & Field Team – Reading to students – Coach Johnson and the UO Track and Field team are looking for opportunities to read to students over the next few months. We will be incorporating their enthusiasm for reading in our Read to Feed Program

• Doodle for Google Contest – Once a year, Google gives K-12 students across the U.S. the chance to display their own Google doodle on www.google.com through the Doodle 4 Google contest. The 2013 Doodle 4 Google contest launches with the theme “My Best Day Ever…” This contest gives students a blank canvas to exercise their creative imagination and doodle about their best day ever — be that in the past, present or future. Google is excited to see moments or thoughts that range from small and personal to broad and far reaching — maybe even out of this universe. Details can be found on their website for submission rules and also prizes. Every state will have one winner!

• How the Arts Intersect with the Common Core State Standards – When you hear CCSS, you don’t typically think of the arts. This short article from ASCD explores four direct connections between the arts and the Common Core State Standards, and consider how Next Generation Arts Standards focused on media arts can strengthen content-area learning.

• John Wooden, Teacher Extraordinaire – Here’s a good article on how John Wooden, the legendary UCLA basketball coach, used four key insights on teacher inquiry. He always insisted that everything he did with his highly successful teams from 1946 to 1975 he learned from teaching high-school English in the 1930s.

Have an excellent week!

Week of January 14th

Hi everyone,

I hope you had a good weekend. I had some good times with my kids and did quite a bit of reading by the fire for my winter coursework at the University. Below I have included some of the events of note for the week and a calendar of noteworthy events.

• Continuing the conversation on race and equity at Awbrey Park (Taking it Up Group)– In November, we sent three teachers to the Taking It Up Seminar to discuss equity and race in 4j SchoolsIt is now January and I’d like to continue the conversation about these important topics with a group of staff. We will be meeting on Thursday, January 24th from 3:00-4:00 in Room 13. Please join us if you would like a cup of tea and maybe a cookie and an important ongoing discussion. Taking it up trained or not, all are welcome to join in this ongoing discussion. In addition, we will be sending more teachers and classified staff to a February training.

David Nelson’s Hours, Our New TSS 2: He works M,W,F from 7:30-11:00. He will begin this schedule on Monday. Welcome to Awbrey Park David! We will have some 5 more hours of support on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from another TSS soon.

IXL Software 1st-5th Site License: We have just paid for our IXL site license. David and Melinda will be working hard to make sure everyone has access in the coming days. There are several complimentary online trainings available called IXL webinars. These webinars are free to AP staff at any time.

Elementary Culinary Contest Announcement from Julie Whittelsley of Nutritional Services:

The  Elementary Culinary Competition has been scheduled for Saturday, April 27th at SEHS. Last year, our middle schools competed. This year’s theme will be HEALTHY Sandwiches, Wraps and Salads.  We are excited here at Food Services and anticipate a great turnout.  We will again try to get the school board members and various other “celebrities” to participate as judges. Flyers and recipe entry forms should be arriving shortly.  All entries will receive a free 4J meal voucher to be used at any time.

Asian Celebration Haiku Contest: 2013.HaikuContest Each year the Asian Celebration has a haiku contest. I don’t know if you have dones this before at Awbrey Park, but I thought you might enjoy this activity with your students.

Artist in Residence Scheduling: We will begin our Artist in Residence scheduling on January 22nd. Ihave formed a rough draft for the schedule and will be checking in with staff about the compatibility of the schedule. The bilingual artist will be doing a multimedia project with our students including; sculpture, music, and learning Spanish. Her name is Jessica Mendoza. I have included the lesson here: AwbreyPark Lesson

• State school report cards being sent to families – As an FYI, the district is emailing state school report cards home to families this week. Here is  our AP Report Card 11-12, that shows how Awbrey Park did last year. I think that we have a lot to be proud of as well as some areas to focus on.

• Social Committee Dues – Please consider giving to the Social Committee Fund if you have not done so this year. The social committee fund helps us support fellow staff members in important life events and for times of fun together. The recommended amount is $20 for staff members licensed or classified. Thank you.

• Martin Luther King Jr. Day March, January 21st – Attached is a flyer with information about the Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day march happening Monday, January 21st if any of you are interested in attending. Danny Glover and other celebrities will be on hand for the event.

• Feb. 1st Awbrey Park PD Day, 12:30-3:30 – Math Task Analysis –  It’s a couple weeks out, but I wanted to let staff know the plan for the Awbrey Park PD day on February 1st. The planning time will occur in the morning. We’re teaming up with Howard for a training with Chris Castillero, the new Associate Director of Curriculum and Professional Development – Mathematics. The day will focus on task analysis, looking at the complexity within a lesson and how to potentially use this as a differentiation tool. We’ll be meeting at the Ed Center auditorium from 12:30-3:30. The morning will be your time for planning. Classified staff, are welcome to attend, but if you are not attending, be sure to connect with your primary cooperating teacher and make a plan for how you can best use this time. Also, expect a Jamba Juice on this day since Allan Chinn is generously giving the AP staff a treat for our United Way contributions and participation as a staff.

Instructional Strategy of the Week: Turn and Talk or Think-Pair-Share

Strategies

Below is a great article by Lucy West on the Power of Turn and Talk, sometimes called Think, Pair, Share. Both Christina and I have spent time talking about this strategy and how to maximize it’s effectiveness in our Jon Saphier Sessions.  Below is a good article that outlines how to integrate Turn and Talk into lessons every day!

Turn and Talk by Lucy West Article

Here is another link to an English Language Learning Site that gives an excellent video and overview of how to use Turn and Talk in a classroom with ELLs present.

Have a great week everyone and stay warm!

All alarm testing will occur after school hours but there may be some contractors in the attic space during the day.

•Crisis Team:  Would you like to be involved in the Crisis Team. Kristen and I will be doing some planning work very soon. We would like to have a variety of voices give input on the plan. Contact Kristin and myself via email if you think you would like to meet to plan this for a couple hours in January.

• Schools Showcase, Saturday, January 26, 9:30 AM–12:00 PM – The School Showcase will be held again this year Jan. 26th, with some changes based on the feedback from last year. If this wasn’t on your radar before, it’s something new the district tried out for the first time last year where parents could learn about all 4J schools in one place at the same time. This year’s event is briefer, just 2.5 hours compared with last year’s 4 hours. Let me know if any of you are willing to help me promote Awbrey Park and tell interested families why they should come to our school! This year there will also be breakfast, including a vegetarian option, for staff helping at the event.

• MECCA Teacher Resource Room – MECCA (Material Exchange Center for Community Arts) here in Eugene would like to spread the word about their Teacher Resource Room. Attached is their e-flyer. If you’re not familiar with MECCA, they are a non-profit organization whose mission is to divert scrap materials from the land fill and make them available to the community for creative reuse, from artists and teachers, to children and their families. MECCA is also dedicated to providing low cost arts education and experiences.

• Tiburcio Vasquez School In California Named After Bandido Ignites Controversy – Here’s a great example of looking at an issue and having different lenses. Here’s the link.

• Community Gang Prevention Symposium – January 12, 2013 – Carmen Urbina asked principals to help get the word out about this symposium. It’s happening on the 12th if any of you are interested in attending or know of anyone else you’d like to pass this information along to.

• Recommended Children’s Books – Suzy Price’s Title 1 blog included this great information on good book selections for kids. These are the most recommended books in Reading Today’s 2012 roundup. Check them out!

Children’s Choices
Teachers’ Choices
Young Adults’ Choices

• Why read-alouds matter more in the age of the Common Core Standards – “In addition to getting kids hooked on books, narrative read-alouds are an effortless way to help students acquire the academic language they will need to comprehend informational texts,” write ASCD authors William Himmele and Pérsida Himmele. In their ASCD Express article, the Himmeles make the case for carefully chosen read-alouds in a time of Common Core State Standards, emphasizing the crucial role this activity can play in building any student’s lexicon “in contexts that are painless and meaningful.” Read on.

Have great first week back, everyone! Happy New Year!

December 16th, 2012

Week of December 17th

Hello Everyone,

With the recent tragic events that unfolded last Friday, I know this will effect people (students, families and staff) in different ways. As we return from school I’m sure some students and parents may want to talk about the shootings and parents may have new safety concerns in addition to those that came out of the incident at YG/Corridor and the shooting at Clackamas Mall. In regards to safety, you can feel free to refer parents to me.

Last Friday, I  shared information on grief and dealing with strong emotional reactions. (Managing Strong Emotional Reactions and Talking to Children About Violence) They contain some excellent advice on how to responds to kids or adults who may come to you with questions or concerns. Donna Somerville, the counselor leader from Instruction, also shared three related documents that might be useful for staff to review; A Guide for Teachers about Grieving StudentsSelf Nurturing Activities, and What We Need During Grief. It is important we maintain a normal routine, but it is also important we reassure students that they are safe here at school.

When we return from break, I will be introducing new safety routines for lock down procedures. We will be practicing this in the first week of January. For now, I am asking Larry to keep classroom doors locked in the morning. It is my goal to increase traffic flow through the front door of the building. There are two things I need all staff to do beginning next week:

  • 1. Please wear your badge so it is visible to parents.
  • 2. Please keep your classroom key on you at all times.

I will be adding on other safety measures methodically and carefully with staff input as they are suggested and evaluated. Remember, we must balance security and a sense of community within our building. Most importantly, I want to add that all of the safety measures that we put in place are a good deterrent. Still, our strongest defense comes from caring and knowing our kids and community.

This time of year is always very stressful for kids and adults for a variety of reasons, but this week will likely be even more so. Be prepared for uncharacteristic behaviors and handle situations calmly and reassuringly as they come up.

Take care of our students and families, but also remember to take care of yourself, your family and each other as well.

Schedule of Events for the Week
Dec. 17 (M)
12:00-1:00, Joel at district office in Equity sub-committe meeting. (Ed Center)
2:00-3:30, Joel and Melissa to Principal and Title 1 Coordinator’s Meeting (Ed Center)
3:45-5:00, Joel to All Admin Meeting (Ed Center)

Dec. 21 (F)
9:00-11:20 Ultimate Bulldog Recess

We will have all students’ transition back to their classrooms at 11:20. DO NOT dismiss students to return to their homeroom until 11:20!!!!

Hazardous Weather and School Closures Memo – Please read over the Hazardous Weather Information for this school year. The short version for building staff is, if there is a snow day, no staff members need to come to school except for lead custodians. And to find out if school is cancelled, besides making announcements via local media and email, downtown is now also announcing school closures over their Facebook and Twitter accounts.

Education Without Representation – Although Hispanic students represent a quarter of the nation’s public school enrollment and are the fastest-growing segment of the school population, non-white Latino children seldom see themselves in books for young readers, reports The New York Times. Education experts and teachers who work with Latino populations say the lack of familiar images could be an obstacle as young readers work to build stamina and deepen their understanding of story elements like character motivation. The Cooperative Children’s Book Center, which compiles statistics about the race of authors and characters in children’s books published each year, found that in 2011, only 3 percent of the 3,400 books reviewed were written by or about Latinos, a proportion unchanged in a decade. As schools across the country implement the Common Core State Standards, many are questioning whether nonwhite students are seeing themselves reflected in the required reading.

BRING Green School Presentations

Brett Jacobs will be giving presentations on Tuesday, February 5th, Thursday, February 7th and Friday, February, 8th.  There is a sign up sheet in the staff room.  Lessons will be about 30 minutes for the older grades and shorter for the primary grades. Since Awbrey Park will be an entry level green school, we thought that it would be a good idea for every teacher to sign up for this opportunity. Brett’s email  is below so that you can contact him if you would like his presentation to tie in with what you are teaching in your class.  Otherwise it will probably be about recycling and conservation. Here is his email: brettj@bringrecycling.org

Receiving the big red book I will be giving each teacher a copy of the ” big red book.”This is the large Jon Saphier book called, The Skillful Teacher. I have had two teachers approach me about getting paper copies. My plan is to buy all paper copies unless you prefer an electronic version. Please let me know if you would like it in another format. As we progress into 2013 I will be promoting discussions school-wide about some “big rocks” to practice such as summarizing, giving effective feedback to students, and visual thinking. This book will be a great resource to try new strategies from and to get a better picture of what Jon Saphier’s  comprehensive work is all about.

iPads, iPads, iPods!– Some of you may know about the district’s exciting iT3 project. The idea is that we will be receiving 90 iPad minis  for 4th Grade and 90 iPad mini’s for 5th grade in January. In addition, both our learning center teacher, and our CLCB will also be receiving training and iPads in their classrooms, though I do not know the exact amount they will receive at this time.  Professional development will be coming very soon for these teachers.  Our iPad 2 fleet will be moving to Madison Middle School in January to increase the amount of students with personal devices there.  Many of the 6th grade learned on these tablets last year. In addition, Tami Brittenham will be receiving 10 iPods  and PD as part of an EEF Grant for increasing iPod use in 3rd grade. The TLT team will be working on plans to increase access to technology in all grades over the year. Several discussions need to occur on how to teach typing skills, how to use existing software we have licenses for in the building, how to assist primary grades with technology access, and more.

Instructional Strategies Resource– Last Wednesday, Christina shared effectiveness of summarizing as a tool in the classroom.  The following website called Focus on Effectiveness outlines each skill studied of in the Robert Marzano meta-analysis. There is a section on summarizing and there are practical examples of primary, intermediate, middle level, and high school practices. This site is created by the Northwest Regional Lab in Portland. Another layer they add to the site is the integration of technology in conjunction with these powerful techniques. I highly recommend this site as a resource for new ideas on improving instruction in your classroom.

IXL Purchasing – We are purchasing the IXL Math Software for 1st through 5th grade very soon. Melinda and I are in contact with the retailer to finalize a price. Ixl works on the iOS and OSX platform. This makes it useful for all the devices we currently have deployed in our building.

Teaching about the Holidays –  There are many approaches to celebrating the holidays at this time of year.  Some approaches are inclusive of our students and sometimes the impact on our students is not so inclusive, even if our intention was to share different traditions.  This is an article titled, Avoiding the Holiday ‘Balance Traps’ , from Tolerance.org which explains the pitfalls some teachers face when balancing holidays in their curriculum.

Books to Match Diverse Young Readers – Related to the above item, here’s a nice resource Carmen shared recently that I wanted to pass along. On this site, you can click on quality titles that feature main characters who are black, Latino, Asian, American Indian or Alaska Native and read the beginning of each book. In response to concerns by the Southern Poverty Law Center and others, the architects of the Common Core are now developing a more diverse supplemental list.

Fire Drill, Wednesday at 9:15 – Our December fire drill will be this Wednesday at 9:15, weather permitting. If it’s raining, we’ll try for a dry day next week.

Have an great week, everyone!

Joel

Taking It Up: Next Steps

Congratulations to Andrew, Arwen, and Beth for completing the Takling It Up Conversations on Race Training. We now have at least 6 members of our staff that have been trained in this area. There are many others who are interested as well ( Let me know if you want to be trained in February). We will have some time during the January 7th PD day to discuss next steps as a staff on equity issues in our building.

Personal Device Project Pilot is a go!

Peter Tromba and Kim Ketterer presented James and myself with some exciting news about a new project to bring personal devices to each 4th and 5th grader at Awbrey Park. All 4th and 5th grade teachers will be using tablets in our building by the end of the year. This project is developing very rapidly and we should see devices from this project in our building sometime in January. In addition, the CLCB and Awbrey LC will also be receiving devices and training through this project.  This is being funded by a $1.2 million portion of the 2011 bond. Spring Creek, and Madison are also involved in our region.

District Using Fleet Funds to pay for new positions in 12-13

The district made a decision to use building fleet funds to pay for 17 new positions in the 12-13 school year. We had a 28.3% cut from our fleet fund. Read the rationale below posted by Simone Sangster our CFO.  Fleet Fund Talking Points I am happy to talk to you about the details of this if you would like more information about the finances at Awbrey Park.

Science Vocabulary – The Edgewood Principal, Larry Williams, asked the rest of our group if anyone had done work in the area of science vocabulary. The science TOSA, Angie Ruzicka, responded by sharing the following link to the complete glossary of terms for the science kits and also shared the test specifications for the Science OAKS assessment. I don’t expect this to be a major focus of ours anytime soon, but I did want to pass these resources along to teachers.

Have a great week brave educators!

Joel
