There will be a test on Properties of Matter lessons 2-8 on Friday February 19th. The review sheet can be found here as a PDF POM 2-8 Review.16 and here as a word document POM 2-8 Review.16. The Edmodo test is on Friday and the hands-on lab test is on Monday. To study for the lab test you need to review the different techniques and calculations we have used and make sure you know how to do them physically.
CER on the Nylon Spacer in the Density Column: This will the third opportunity for students to turn in a formal color coded paragraph using the process of Claim, Evidence and Reasoning to provide a scientific explanation for something they observe in class. Students built a density column made out of corn syrup, water and oil. They added a copper cylinder and nylon spacer to the layers that formed in the graduated cylinder. They will use evidence from their investigations in lesson 2 & 3 to provide a reasoned explanation to answer the question: Why does the nylon spacer go to a specific place in the density column? The answer to this question will be their claim. The evidence to support the claim should focus on observations and results from lesson 2 and 3. The reasoning should describe the relationship between the evidence and claim using scientific vocabulary and principles learned in class. After completing the template/worksheet, students will convert their Claim, Evidence and Reasoning into a color coded paragraph using the pages app on the iPad and then turn it in as a PDF to Edmodo (saving it to the backpack first and then attaching it to the assignment.)
Density Quiz on Wednesday 1/27: Students will have some time in class to complete the review sheet for the density quiz which will be given on Edmodo on Wednesday in class. I will be available for extra help before school on Monday Tuesday and Wednesday.
Our new unit is called Properties of Matter or POM. It is a chemistry unit in which we will explore characteristic properties of matter. (those are properties that are evident no matter how much of a substance you have) These include, color, crystal shape, density, solubility, melting point, malleability, conductivity etc. We will also be exploring the whether mass is conserved in different situations and determining the difference between physical and chemical change. As part of this unit we will take a detour into the periodic table and atomic structure (these are items included on the Science OAKS test, but not included in the unit) Students will be given a science notebook and a textbook to take and leave at home. There are links to the science notebook SN and the text book on the SN tab above in case students need to access either item when they don’t have paper copies. SNs will be turned in on most Fridays for evaluation. Homework is included in the science notebook and must be completed on time to receive full credit. (a stamp denotes that an assignment was completed on time). Quizzes will be given using Edmodo and unit tests that include hands on assessments will be given three times throughout the unit. If you miss class or get behind or confused please check my office hours and come in for help. These hours change weekly due to my meeting schedule and it is important to check before planning to come in.
This quiz will cover lessons 5 & 6. Here is the Review Sheet 5&6. The quiz will cover a lot of vocabulary and concepts so make sure you complete this review sheer on pages 88 and 89 in your SN and study. Quizzes account for 40% of your grade in science so doing well will help you continue to have a great start to the term. If you will not be at school Friday please check my office hours to pick a time to make it up AFTER you have completed the review sheet and studied your C-note summaries and review sheet. Here are most of the answers to the Review Sheet 6 & 7w. answers

Here is the inspiration mind map that I made comparing and contrasting Transverse and Longitudinal Waves. If you didn’t get a chance to make changes and additions to your mind map in class you can use mine. If you have good suggestions of things to add send me an email!
Using Claims, Evidence Reasoning to answer a scientific question is a process we will be practicing throughout the year. This is the second opportunity for students to turn in a formal color coded paragraph using the process of Claim, Evidence and Reasoning to provide a scientific explanation for something they observe in class. Students built a spinning coil motor on Friday, November 13th. They will use evidence from their investigations to provide a reasoned explanation to answer the question: Where does the kinetic energy in the spinning coil motor come from? The answer to this question will be their claim. The evidence to support the claim should focus on observations and results from lesson 4.

Here are the plans for Friday November 6, 2015
- Use your iPad to read and mark the text for “Conservation of Energy” from the Reflections.EWIT.3.0 (if you don’t have a charged iPad, read page 58 in Student Textbook).
- On page 54 in your SN write the heading: EWIT 3.0 Reflections. Then write a paragraph demonstrating your understanding of the “Law of Conservation of Energy”. Be sure to give several examples to support your description. Then draw a colored and labeled diagram of a “system” that illustrates your understanding of the concept. This example could include an electric device or a circuit that we have built in class.
- Open “Extending your knowledge Energy Star- A Bright Idea” in notability on your iPad. Mark the text by circling key words and highlighting main ideas.
- Write C-notes for Energy Star- A Bright Idea” on page 55 of your SN: Circle Key terms, underline or highlight main ideas and then write a question on the left for each main idea. Before you write your summary, collaborate with a partner to see whether you missed anything important: Write your summary in class if you have time. The Essential Question: Describe the energy star program and how it can be used by consumers to reduce the amount of energy they/we use.
- All SNs are due Monday: Make sure yours is complete pages 42-55!
Get ready for our second quiz on MONDAY NOVEMBER 2 (date changed) The quiz will cover all the concepts and readings from EWIT lessons 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, and 2.4. Review your Science notebook, study C-notes, and complete the review sheet EWIT.Rev.Les.2 by writing answers on page 46 and 47 of your SN to prepare.
We will frequently be using a reading strategy called marking the text where students will open a reading in the app called Notability on the student iPad. In notability, students can select different tools, (highlighters, pencils, text boxes, erasers etc) in order to mark the text in the ways assigned by the teacher. The default markings are to circle key words and vocabulary and to highlight main ideas. Since the students will be prompted to open the article/reading in Notability during class, all students should be able to access the readings at home even of they don’t have wireless. I will make a few paper copies available of each reading for students who do not have permission to take the iPad home.
