February 16th Newsletter

Dear families,

We had a wonderful Valentine’s Day party! Thanks to wonderful organizers: Mandy for the cute craft, Emily, Kate, Daisy and Vanessa for yummy snacks and Savannah for the fun BINGO and prizes.  The joy and excitement in our room was priceless.

February is a month of caring at Holt. For Bertha Holt’s birthday, we had an assemby where students learned about how one single dollar can be combined with other students’ dollars to make a difference in the lives of people.  Our class and our buddy classroom will combine our earnings to buy farm animals, water filters, vegetable gardens and other things for Holt International Agency.  Last week, students brought home a green paper with suggestions on how studens can earn those dollars.  If you would like to have your child participate, please have him/her do a chore for you to earn a dollar, write down what s/he did and return the dollar and green paper to school by Friday.

We also are supporting a local agency, First Place Family Shelter with our annual Sock Hop, Crazy Sock Day and Sock Drive.  This Friday students are encouraged to wear CRAZY SOCKS to our Sock Hop.  We will be led in all sorts of fun dances by Ms. Fox and her 5th graders.  Students are encouraged to donate new or gently used socks to a local organization called First Place Family Shelter.  Parents and guardians are welcome to join us for the Sock Hop from 8:00-8:25.  It’s super cute, fun and great exercise!

We have an amazing, clay artist, Laura Jackson Tuesday through Thursday, leading students in clay classes.  We are making two special projects that will come home in May and June.

HOMEWORK: Only Monday Mailers came home today.  I am hanging onto green folders for at least another week.  I am hoping to have some new and improved options for at-home math practice.  Stay tuned for more information.

  1. 20 mimutes at home reading and fill in your February reading calendar.
  2. Memorize Lesson 17 HFW.
  3. Spelling homework for Lesson 17.

What we’re learning this week:

MATH: We are starting a new unit on graphs where we’ll be organizing, understanding and asking/answering questions about data

READING:  Blending words with the long e (as in please, bee, me, these) as we read stories about different ways of traveling.  Our comprehension skills are comparing and contrasting and identifying dialogue.

WRITING:  Using “glue words” to turn two simple sentences into a compound sentence.  Kim rides a bike, and Shawn rides a scooter.  Using our “easy points” when writing, proofreading our work and adding details to our stories.
