Posted by ligon_r in Apple Software, How To's

To help a student listen to text on a computer, here’s what he/she needs to do:

1. Choose Apple menu > System Preferences. Click Dictation & Speech then click Text to Speech.
2. Select the “Speak selected text when the key is pressed” checkbox. (Alex is the clearest voice.)
3. Highlight the text that you want read aloud.
4. Hold down the Option key and then press the ESC key to begin text to speech. To stop it, hold down Option and then press the ESC key again.

If you want a student to use the Dictation feature, here’s what you do:
1. Choose Apple menu > System Preferences. Click Dictation & Speech then click Dictation.
2. To start dictating, the student will need to be in a document or wherever you can type text. (Google Docs, Pages, etc.)
3. Click on the FN key twice and then begin speaking. A microphone icon will appear. Click on the done button on the microphone icon to stop dictating.
4. You must speak slowly and clearly for the microphone to do an accurate job of translating your dictation to text.
