Wit and Wisdom

PLEASE do not help your student with Lalilo, RAZ Reading, or Dreambox Math. Struggle is part of the growth process, and they progress through the programs as they show their own skill proficiency. The programs help build skills, promote engagement through some level of choice, and offer incentives/rewards. It’s important that they work on their own in this  work, to gain the benefit of growth and confidence, plus teachers use the info on the data side, so please do not do the work for them, nor provide answers. We continue to encourage each student to grow their brain through struggle and practice!

Lalilo is a foundational reading program for primary grades provided the District, which we use routinely during some independent reading time, and which students can use on their own time. It covers, phonemic awareness, letter recognition, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Students’ initial entry will prompt a placement test, or a series of tests, to help set their level. Lalilo is a responsive program that “levels up” within its environment, based on a student’s proficiency of reading skill sets. Do not help them with this program!

RAZ-Plus/RAZ Kids (via Clever) provides practice listening to and reading choice fiction and non-fiction pieces, both with comprehension questions. Reading level access is set by the teacher, based on assessments, and will be changed as needed. Do not help them with this program!

Epic! is a choice reading program with fiction, nonfiction, read-to-me books, audio books, and some story videos. Students can browse, set collections, and teacher can assign or suggest titles or collections.

MATH

Learn Zillion

Dreambox is a leveled, responsive game-based math site the school district is using that involves math concept comprehension and fluency via skill work. It starts out a bit easy and increases as students show mastery in skills. Do not help them with this program!

ART

We will cover the basic art elements (line, shape, form, texture, value, space, color), through integrated projects, a bit of art history/artists, and explore various media. National Arts Standards of creating, performing/presenting/producing, responding, and connecting are woven throughout. Art for art’s sake art is fun – and art helps with learning through all other subjects, and it helps develop creativity, fine motor skills, focus, communication, appreciation, and confidence.

OPTIONAL

Scholastic News for First Grade provides a digital version of the reading magazine and related thematic vocabulary, short videos, and brief skill activities. Click on Back Issues for previous editions, or use the search box for specific topics. The website is accessible for families to explore at home under our class login, adams10.

StarFall is a kid-friendly learning site that targets specific academic skills. The free K/1 components are good supports, especially the “Learn to Read” mouse tab.

XtraMath is a fact/drill site that supports math fact fluency. School use is pending… There is a free laptop/desktop option and a $5 tablet/smart phone option.

GoNoodle  is a movement and learning site. It has free and subscription levels. There isn’t a class login. You can sign up for your own free account or search for some of their videos on YT.
