Reading

FUNdations, Geodes decodables, and Wit and Wisdom literature are the main Language Arts curricula the district uses for primary grades. More information will be forthcoming in newsletters and homework. We also engage in school libary time, the SMART reading mentorship program, fourth grade reading buddies, Scholastic News, reading across subjects, and of course, with our huge collection of classroom books for read aloud/story time and quiet independent book time.

Tips for reading with your child daily  This is the most important support you can provide to your 1st grade student.

  • Read to them to build vocabulary, comprehension, as a fluency model – and for fun!
  • Have them read to you. Ask them about the 5-finger strategy for picking a “just right” book.
  • Have them read words they know, work on letter sounds they can try to sound out/decode and blend. Have them re-read a sentence fluently a few times after doing the hard work of decoding the words. Model or provide more difficult words they cannot yet read.
  • Have your student read with siblings, friends, pets, stuffed animals, and dolls!
  • Keep flashcards in a special spot at home or in the car, if you drive.
  • Have them attempt to read anywhere – recipes, correspondence, signs, menus, products.
  • Keep it positive and fun!

Reading Rockets has some helpful info pages about phonemes (video), phonological and phonemic awareness, and phonics:

The Eugene Public Library Kids’ page has some good resources for families, book lists and recommendations, reading tips, accessible e-books and audio books, and app recommendations – plus all the great printed books in the library! The youth division staff are very helpful!
