Reading

Whole Group Instruction:

  • We use Journeys for our reading curriculum. The anchor texts that we read each week are an equal amount of fiction and informational texts. During our whole group time we will read the anchor texts and focus on the target skill and target strategy for the week.

Small Group Instruction:

  • Focuses on individual reading skills needed – fluency and comprehension with higher level phonics instruction. I will be meeting with each group at least twice per week.
  • Some groups will also meet with a parent volunteer to read novels during this time.

Independent Work:

  • Provides meaningful work while small groups meet. Independent work includes a variety of word work choices to practice spelling, vocabulary, writing, and grammar. The goal of this time is for students to learn how to manage their time. Work that is not completed during independent work time will be sent home for homework the following week.
