Health Unit~Parent Letter

Dear Parents,
This letter is to inform you that beginning on June 2, science students will receive
a few days of instruction in the areas of HIV/AIDS and human growth and development.
The HIV/AIDS lessons focus on AIDS as a communicable disease and its
prevention. Abstinence from sex and avoidance of IV drugs are both strongly stressed.
The human growth and development lessons explain the stages of human development
from conception to adolescence. Refusal skills (how to say no) will be discussed in
conjunction with these lessons. At the 6th grade and 7th grade level, birth control and
means of protection against sexually transmitted diseases such as HIV/AIDS will not be
directly addressed although they may come up in the course of discussions.
Many parents have strong opinions about these topics. Our curriculum is available
in room 35 at ATA if you would like to preview it.
Please return this letter only if you do NOT want your child to participate in
the classroom health lessons. If you choose to not have your child attend class during
the lessons on AIDS and human development, your child will be placed on independent
study and will complete lessons from a different section of the health textbook.
Sincerely,
Kathleen Taylor and Daniel Morphis,
ATA science teachers
