Week of 10/26-30

This will be an exciting week for the 6th graders as our salmon eggs are dropped off this week! Constant monitoring of water pH, ammonia levels, and temperature will be done with students taking turns performing each task.

7th and 8th graders will be looking at Newton’s Laws of Motion with the 2nd law introduced this week. We will take a detour in the middle of the week and look at the rain shadow effect with precipitation levels on each side of the Cascades. Geography will be integrated into this as students will be plotting eight cities around Oregon and calculating average rainfall amounts for cities on the East and West side of the Cascades.image016

We have started a new cycle in the grading period.

This means that no missing work from the previous 4.5 weeks will be accepted, as grades have been turned in and given to students. I will have extra credit opportunities available, and we actually had one in class yesterday for our water cycle inspiration project. Making sure you are turning in the work you completed is crucial for success in middle and high school! Many students do the work but fail to turn it in. I see several pieces of unfinished work in students binders on a regular basis, and this leads to failing grades. Parents can check students’ binders to see if there is any work that should have been turned in.

Week of 10/19-10/23

This week brings a change for the classes. 7th and 8th period will begin a unit on rivers, with a focus on salmon. We will have salmon eggs delivered next Tuesday, which we will raise in our classroom and release on our field trip November 19th at Whitaker Creek in the Coast Range. pH levels, ammonia levels, and water temperature will be constantly measured to ensure an adequate habitat for our salmon to hatch and grow.

4th period will delve into the physical sciences with a unit on gravity. Velocity, distance, and time are the addressed in this week’s home work packet, which is of course due Thursday. Wednesday we will build our center of gravity people and next week we will conduct an egg drop experiment!

Funnel Clouds Possible?!

The Weather Channel is forecasting the following:

...STRONG THUNDERSTORMS EXPECTED THIS MORNING AND EARLY AFTERNOON...

SCATTERED THUNDERS STORMS ARE EXPECTED OVER THE NORTHWEST PORTION OF
OREGON AND SOUTHWEST WASHINGTON THIS MORNING AND EARLY AFTERNOON
AS A COLD FRONT MOVES ACROSS THE AREA. THESE STORMS ARE MOVING
VERY FAST AND YOU CAN EXPECT BRIEF HEAVY RAIN WITH THE STORMS. SOME
OF THESE THUNDERSTORMS COULD BE PRODUCE GUSTY WINDS UP TO 50 MPH.
THERE IS ALSO A POSSIBILITY OF ROTATION WITH THESE STORMS AND A
FUNNEL CLOUD IS NOT OUT OF THE QUESTION.

AFTER THE INITIAL COLD FRONT MOVES THROUGH SOME THUNDERSTORMS MAY
DEVELOP LATER THIS AFTERNOON AS COLDER AIR MOVES IN ALOFT.

HOMEWORK PACKET #3: 9/30

There was some confusion about the homework packet #3. This is to clarify this confusion:

4th period: 7th/8th graders: IT IS DUE MONDAY

7th/8th periods: 6th graders: IT IS DUE TOMORROW.

The 4th period class did not get the packet until today due to the Jog-a-thon yesterday.
