Spring Break Practice Packet

Here is a copy of the spring break extra credit practice packet: Spring Break Math Practice Packet.  This assignment is 100% optional, but will help reinforce the concepts that we have covered so far this year, and will preview a couple that we are going to be working with following the break.  This is due with a final deadline of Friday, April 1 (the Friday after we return from break).  Students may do up to 16 pages for a total of 8 pts of extra credit toward their spring trimester grade.  Have a great spring break!

Friday 3/11: Class does not meet due to AM field trip (Periods 1-3)

Announcements: Welcome to another week of 6th grade math!  Believe it or not, the school year is almost 2/3 over!  This week, we will be wrapping up chapter 6.  Our math class will not meet on Friday due to the school-wide field trip.  If you have questions about the field trip be sure to ask your student, your student’s advisory teacher, or the office.  We will return to Kelly around noon, and will have periods 1-3 after an extended lunch.  The chapter 6 test will be next Tuesday.  We will use next Monday to review, will take the chapter test on Tuesday, and use Wednesday as a proficiency improvement day.  Next Wednesday is the last day of the trimester, and will also be the last day I will be able to accept any work that we have done.  Over spring break I will send home a review packet.  Just like the one I sent home over winter break, this will serve as the only extra credit assignment over the spring term.  Students will have until the end of the first week of the spring term to complete it and turn it in.  It will be worth a few homework assignments just like the first one.  Also, track practice starts TODAY!  As a result, my availability after school will be limited to Fridays.  As always, I am easily reached by email, and will return your correspondence quickly.  Let me know if you need anything, and I hope you have a fantastic week!

Announcements: Welcome to another full week of 6th grade math!  This week we will be introducing a few new concepts that lead into how we can apply some basic algebraic functions to help make some tasks easier that we’ve already covered.  The week will start with a little bit more work on using division to solve more complex problems – which the students are doing very well with.  Last week, the students were doing so well with the concepts of using division involving fractions that I gave them a good portion of Friday to complete the homework assignment for the weekend as I provided students one-on-one help if they had questions about specific problems.  Most students took advantage of this, so if your student has a full homework assignment from math over the weekend it is because they did not use their time wisely on Friday.  Looking at the calendar, we are still scheduled to finish this chapter by the beginning of spring break.  Based on student progress over the course of the chapter so far, I have no doubts that they’ll do just fine with this.  I will be spending the better part of this weekend updating Synergy, and will be sending home a grade report early this week.  It will have all homework assignments listed for the rest of the chapter as well as the tests that we will take, so that you can see exactly what your student needs to do to be successful for the rest of the unit & term.  When we come back from spring break, we will kick things off with a handful of projects and review activities before we start chapter 7.  I hope you all have a fantastic week!

Announcements:  Welcome to another week of 6th grade math!  Believe it or not the end of the trimester is quickly approaching.  We have this week, and only two full weeks before the last week of the trimester (which is a 3-day week).  Even though we just started chapter 6 this week, we will be able to finish it by the end of the term.  We will have our first pre-assessment of the chapter by the end of the week, and I will make sure to email everyone the learning targets and assignment list for the chapter.  Early returns on the chapter – the students are doing a great job with the material so far.  These announcements are a few days later than normal, but all of the students are doing really well with the material in this chapter in class.  As always, please let me know if you have any questions. I hope you all have a great week!

Announcements: Welcome to a new week of 6th grade math!  We have a short week this week due to the holiday on Monday, and the early release schedule on Friday; math will only meet 3 times this week.  We will do the chapter 5 closure lesson on Tuesday, and then will do the chapter 5 test over Wednesday and Thursday.  Both days of the test we will do a couple review problems before students do the test.  The test will cover the chapter 5 learning targets.  I will not have the students test on finding the area of a trapezoid because they have only had this for one lesson.  Students will have until Friday, 3/4 to turn in any missing work from chapter 5 for credit.  I will send home another progress report at the end of the week so that you will know if your student should be working on any chapter 5 makeup work.  After Friday the 4th, no work from chapter 5 will be accepted other than make-up tests.  Looking ahead, chapter 6 is one of the longer chapters in the textbook.  We will, however, be able to finish the chapter before spring break.  I will be providing another extra credit packet for spring break just like the one I made for over the winter break.  Just like the previous one, completion of the packet will not be required, but a few extra points are always helpful.  I will pass the packet out the last week before the break.  As always, let me know if you have any questions.  I hope you all have a fantastic week!

Announcements: Welcome to the 2nd half of the winter trimester!  I hope you all had a good weekend.  I sent home a progress report with your student on Thursday with the expectation that they would talk to you about their progress in math class.  Students may still turn in any missing homework from chapter 5 for credit, but the deadline has long since passed for anything from chapter 4.  In the progress report I also included the learning target scores from the fall trimester.  While they of course can’t have their grade changed from the fall trimester they can always retake a learning target test to demonstrate their improved proficiency on the task.  Every once in a while we will have “Proficiency Improvement Days” like we had for part of the day on Thursday where students will be able to select a couple different learning targets that they can improve on, do a few practice problems, correct them with an answer key that I will provide, and re-take the learning target test.  The focus for these will always be the current trimester (because those learning target tests impact the overall grade, and the ones from past trimesters do not), but students may always retake one from a past trimester to show that they have improved.  This week we will come close to finishing chapter 5. Because the material is fairly dense this week, we will have a review activity on Friday to go over the work we do over the course of the week.  Next week we will lead off with the chapter 5 closure review activity, and then the chapter 5 test.  My goal for us is to be through chapter 6 by the end of the trimester.  Also, a reminder that I am usually available to help students with any questions they have after school until 4:30.  This availability will change as of March 7 because of track season, and I am one of the track coaches at Kelly.  As always, let me know if you have any questions, and I hope that you have a fantastic week!

Friday 2/5: No School – Mid-Trimester Grading Day

Announcements: Welcome to the last week of the 1st half of your student’s 6th grade year!  This week marks the mid-point of the school year, so I have been going over some data to see how students have been progressing on the learning targets.  Like I have said time and again, my class is all about having your student improve on their math skills – the way that I track this is by giving a pre-assessment quiz on a target shortly after introducing it, and then giving a post-assessment test on the same material or concepts at the end of a chapter.  The quizzes do not impact the grade, but are reported on Synergy; the tests do impact the grade and are also reported on Synergy.  These quizzes and tests are typically on a 4-point proficiency scale, and my goal for the class is for the class overall to improve by at least 1 proficiency point between the pre-assessment and the post-assessment.  After looking at the numbers for the first half of the year, the class has improved on the learning targets by more than 1.5 points on average.  I wanted to make sure to share this with you because your students have been working very hard!  This week we have a 4-day week, and I am planning on only assigning three assignments throughout the week.  Thursday will be another proficiency improvement day where students will identify at least two key learning targets that they can improve on, they will do some work to improve their scores, and will be able to retake a learning target test to demonstrate that they have improved.  I will be sending home a progress report on Thursday to give you a more detailed picture of the work that your student has been completing in math.  I am also planning on posting the math videos that students made soon.  They take a while to grade, but the ones that have been submitted so far are quite good.  As always, please let me know if you need anything.  I hope you all have a fantastic week!

Announcements: Welcome to a new week of 6th grade math!  I hope you all had a good weekend.  Last week we finished the winter easyCBM testing, and started filming our math tutorial videos.  The math liaison between 4J and the University of Oregon happened to visit our class on Thursday, and was very impressed with the work that students were doing with their videos.  I am planning on having Monday as our last day to work on these, and to do any final submissions of them on Tuesday at the start of class. If students need time to work on their video tutorial after this point then they have to come in on their own time – before school or after school – in order to work on it. Once I have looked over, and graded them I will be posting them to our math video page.  I will let you know once they are ready to go.  After we’re done with the video tutorials, we will begin our work on chapter 5 of our textbook.  Students should begin regular homework again on Tuesday.  We will have a preassessment on one of the chapter 5 learning targets this week, and we will spend Friday improving on our proficiency in one or two learning targets that students have been assessed on this year.  My goal for all students is to improve on standard math measures such as the learning targets and easyCBM, and so far they are doing a great job of that overall.  Mid-Trimester grades are coming up in less than two weeks.  We will be in the middle of chapter 5 when this happens.  Any missing work from chapter 5 turned in after Mid-Trimester grading will be allowed, but will not reflect on the midterm grade.  I will send home a progress report the week of midterm grades so that you know what to expect from your student’s math grade.  As always, let me know if you have any questions, and I hope you have a great week!

Announcements: Welcome to another week of 6th grade math!  We have a shorter week this week due to the holiday on Monday.  This week we will be working on the winter checkpoint EasyCBM testing.  Most likely, your student has already completed his/her testing in Language Arts.  We will begin the test on Wednesday, and finish it on Thursday.  I will not allot any more class time for the test, but if your student needs more time, there will be make-up sessions scheduled with other school staff.  Before and after this testing, students will continue working on their math tutorial videos.  The expectation for these by the end of the week is that students will have done the following:

1: Completed the example problems;
2: Corrected the example problems to check for accuracy;
3: Chosen one or two of the example problems to do a tutorial on that they feel comfortable with;
4: Written a step-by-step script that they will be able to use as a cue card when they are filming their screencast of the work.

All four of these steps must be completed, and checked off by me before a student is allowed to do his/her screencast.  We will only spend about two days on the filming portion of the tutorials.  It should take about a half class period to go over how to do them, another half class for students to familiarize themselves with the software, and then one to one and a half class periods to film them.  When we’re done with them, I would like to post them to the Kelly Math page so that they can be used as resources.  I hope you all have a great week.  Let me know if you need anything.

Friday 1/15: (Early Release, Periods 1-3): Class does not Meet

Announcements: Hello, and welcome to another week of 6th grade math!  We will begin a class project this week that involve the learning targets that we have covered so far this year in class.  Since the beginning of the school year, we have covered a total of 12 different learning targets in class.  These have all been tested, and students have received proficiency scores (Proficient, Almost Proficient, Developing Proficiency, or Beginning Proficiency) based on their performance on these assessments.  This week, students will have the opportunity to create a math tutorial video by using the screen cast software on our iPads to demonstrate how to setup and solve problems from the learning targets that they are most proficient at.  These tutorials will then be posted on my math tutorial video page so that students can use them as a resource.  Being that we are halfway through our textbook (and about halfway through the 6th grade learning targets for the school year) it makes sense to do this now.  I am planning on having the class do a similar activity for the learning targets from chapters 5-8 at the end of the year, but our ability to do so will depend on how much time we have at the end of school.  We will be working on this project for this entire week, and might spend a day or two the following week to finish it up.  As a result, homework this week will mostly entail working on some preparation materials for these tutorials.  I will upload instructions for these assignments later on this week, and will also hand them out in class.  A reminder that Thursday of this week is the final day that I will accept any work from chapter 4 as well as the extra credit packet; there will be no excpetions. Also, just an FYI – on Wednesday, January 20 and Thursday, January 21 the class will be doing the winter trimester EasyCBM checkpoint test.  My goal is for all students to be able to demonstrate growth since the fall benchmark that we took in September.  Let me know if you have any questions.  I hope you have a great week!

Announcements:  Hello everyone, and welcome to the last week before winter break!  I hope that you and your students have some relaxing planned over the two and a half week hiatus from school.  We have a jam-packed week.  It’s hard to believe that we just started chapter 4 only about a week ago, and here we are having the chapter 4 test on Thursday.  As a reminder, students have until Friday, January 8 to turn in the winter break practice packet that I will be sending home this week as well as any lingering assignments from chapter 4.  After this date, they will not be accepted, period.  We will spend those few days after break reviewing and getting back into the curriculum after the layoff.  I will email you a digital copy of the practice packet as well as post it on the website in the week at a glance above when I have it completed.  I expect to have it ready in a couple of days.  The new math interactive notebooks arrived this week.  Those students who wanted one have been given one.  Please have your student let me know if they would like one or if you would like them to have one.  The notebooks cover chapters 4-6.  I hope you all have a fantastic week!  As always, let me know if you need anything.

Math Interactive Notebooks

Over the course of the past several months, the other 6th grade math teachers and I have been creating an interactive notebook for chapters 4, 5, and 6 to coincide with the CPM textbook.  I sent home a letter about this towards the middle of last week.  I will send home the letter electronically later today as well as the weekly email.  This interactive notebook has a place for students to do their classwork, write down questions, a place for their homework, and even includes any math notes and resource pages needed to do assignments.  This resource is NOT required for my math class, however, it is encouraged that students use it.  These will be available for purchase this upcoming week, and will just cost $3.50 per student.  This just covers the cost of printing the books.  If you would like your student to have one, please let me know.  I can collect any payments for these books beginning Tuesday.  If you would also like to sponsor another student as well I am completely fine with that.  Let me know if you need anything.

Announcements: Welcome to a new chapter, and a new trimester!  We only have nine school days left before winter break, and believe it or not, we are going to finish this new chapter before we leave for the two and a half week long break.  As a reminder, I will be providing a winter break math packet to the students.  It is NOT a class requirement that this be completed, but it will serve as extra practice in some of the key concepts from chapters 1-4 that we will have covered through that point for those who want it.  Students will be able to earn a few extra credit points for completing the packet.  As a rule, I almost never offer extra credit opportunities, so I encourage all students to complete the packet to start the winter trimester off on a positive note.  This packet along with any and all work from chapter 4 will have a hard deadline of the Friday after winter break, January 8.  No work from chapter 4 will be accepted after this date.  Just to let you know, I will be sending home a second email in supplement to this week at a glance.  The second email is an information form regarding the interactive notebooks that myself and the other 6th grade math teachers have created for chapters 4-6.  These cost $3.50 apiece, but by no means are required.  However, I feel that the notebook can serve as a great tool for students as it has places to complete classwork, homework, notes, includes resource pages, and a place to track progress on learning targets.  These will be available starting later this week.  As always, please let me know if you need anything.  Have a great week!

Chapter 4 Assignment List

Here is the assignment list for chapter 4.  The first assignment was already assigned and is due on Tuesday 12/8 of the upcoming week.  Just like the last three chapters, this list is what I expect to assign, but depending on what the class needs I will alter it as necessary.  Look at the weekly agendas for any and all updates.  I fully expect us to get through the entirety of the chapter and be able to test on it before winter break starts.  This will allow us to start a brand new chapter with the new year.

Welcome to the winter trimester!

We have two weeks of school until the winter break.  I fully expect us to get through most of chapter 4 by the time we leave for the break.  Just a reminder that if you’re looking for any of the posts from the first trimester that you need to go to the main page of my blog, click in the archive on the right-side of the screen for posts in December 2015, and then open the archive post for 6th grade math.  Everything that was on our main math page was transferred there so we can keep all information organized by trimesters.  Let me know if you have any questions.

Learning Targets for Chapter 4

Here are the learning targets for chapter 4.  I believe that we will be able to cover all of chapter 4 and assess student’s learning on these targets prior to the winter break.

6.4.1 I recognize the role of, and can use variables in mathematical equations.

6.4.2 I can use ratios to describe relationships between similar shapes and enlarge and reduce figures while keeping their shape.

6.4.M I can add and subtract mixed numbers.
