Student Workbooks: Grading E-Book Project this upcoming weekend & any make-up work.

Announcements: Hello, and welcome to the last full week of 6th Grade Math! This week we are all-in working on our comprehensive final project for math. Students are creating an e-book that demonstrates their learning over the course of the year by selecting from a sample of problems from each unit we have completed and showing how they exemplified the attributes of PILOTS in their work. This e-book will then be exported to Google Drive and sharable with you so that you can see what they have learned over the course of the year. This will be my last newsletter for our class. I have thoroughly enjoyed being your student’s math teacher this year, and will miss seeing them everyday next year. I have been told by our administration that I will be teaching 8th Grade Science & the 8th Grade Pilot Leadership class next year, so I won’t have the opportunity to work with your student, however, I would urge them to apply for 7th Grade AVID (I have applications currently available) as well as the 8th Grade Leadership program (applications will be available in February 2020) which is where I might have the chance to work with them again. This was a wonderful group to work with. I told them time and time again that they reminded me of why I fell in love with teaching middle school. They were constantly very positive with me and each other, worked hard, had good focus, and responded well to constructive feedback. They demonstrated excellent growth throughout the year, and I am proud of what they have been able to accomplish. They should do very well in 7th grade. Even though I will not be your child’s teacher next year (with the exception of those who have my advisory class), I will always consider them to be my students. They will always have a place to get assistance in my classroom whether it is on math, science, or anything else. In the future, please let me know if you need anything, and I will do everything I can to support you, your student, and their time here at Kelly. Thank you, and have a wonderful summer!

Next week we will be doing an e-book project using the iPads that allows the students to showcase how they have modeled PILOTS in what we have done in math class this year. They will complete a variety of problems based on the units that we have done, show how these problems have demonstrated their Perseverence, Imagination, Learning, Ownership, Teamwork, and Support. When these are done students will be able to export them to their google drive and you will be able to view them from home. It should be a fun project, and a good way to wrap up the school year. I hope you all are having a wonderful week! Let me know if you need anything.

Announcements: Hello, and welcome to another week of 6th Grade Math! This week we will be wrapping up Unit 6 and then turn our attention to the 7th grade placement test. We will spend a couple of days reviewing for the test – specifically doing a holistic review of the material that we have covered so far this year. We are completing the test as late in the window as possible so as to give students the best opportunity to be successful on it. We will split the test over two days on Monday 4/29 and Tuesday 4/30. I updated scores in the Unit 6 workbook over the weekend. Students can have until Friday 5/3 to update/fix any scores they scored low on – all they have to do is fix what is missing/incomplete and put a sticky note on the scoring sheet that indicates what lessons/pages they fixed. I hope you all have a wonderful week! Let me know if you need anything.

Announcements: Hello, and welcome to another week of 6th Grade Math! This will be our last full week of unit 6. I fully expect us to get through the rest of the unit next week, and have our unit 6 test thereafter. On Monday we had a in-depth discussion about effort, following through on what is asked of us, and why it is so important – in class, school, and beyond. It was an excellent discussion, and I am proud of how the students handled themselves. I am going to be giving students a study guide for the 7th Grade Math Placement Test later this week – effectively a review of the major concepts that we have covered this year. We will spend some time working in class on these review items after Unit 6 before we jump into Unit 7 and state testing. I do not have an exact test date for the placement test just yet; I need to talk to the other teachers in our building as the district wants these to be given at basically the same time. This meeting is going to occur at the end of the week. I will have more details for you in my next newsletter. I hope you all have a fantastic week! Let me know if you need anything.

Announcements: Hello, and welcome to another week of 6th Grade Math! This week we will get about to the halfway point of unit 6. I expect us to have another week or two to finish it out before the unit 6 test. I updated scores through lesson 6.3 today. There were several students who did not give me their workbook to grade at the end of the week – their scores show as “missing.” Please remind your student to get these to me ASAP at the start of the week so that I can update their scores. Announcements: Hello, and welcome to another week of 6th Grade Math! This week we will start our unit on decimals and doing multiple functions with them. I will give students back their tests early this week so that they have the chance to do corrections if they so choose. They can earn back points up to the 80% mark by doing corrections. The way they do corrections is that they redo a problem that they got incorrectly by using resources at their disposal. To get the credit, they take another copy of the test and staple it to their original, have to find the correct answer, and explain what they did wrong in their solution (ex.: I accidentally multiplied my fractions rather than divided them, or I put 2/3 rather than 1/2 early in the problem, and that caused my solution to be smaller/greater than the actual answer, etc.). What I tell them is that it is not enough to just end up at the right answer, but even more important to know how or why the right solution is indeed correct or how/why we messed up to begin with. The how and the why make the learning meaningful rather than simply knowing that something was right or wrong. Students will have until Friday, March 8 to get me any and all test corrections from this trimester – all can earn back up to 80% on their assessment scores by doing the test correction process.

Announcements: Hello, and welcome to another week of 6th Grade Math! This week we are finishing up Unit 4. We will have our review on Thursday and our test on Friday. I updated notebook scores over the past couple of days. If your student had not turned it in to me their scores have not been updated – there were only 2 or 3 who didn’t have it turned in for me to update. I fully expected to be at school today (Wednesday), but my 4-year-old woke up with a fever after being up most of the night fussing and coughing. My apologies for the unexpected absence. We will start Unit 5 next week which covers an assortment of functions using decimals. Unit 6 we start to introduce more concepts that they will investigate further once they start working with basic algebraic equations and some basic graphing in unit 7. Using some of the unit 6-8 material we will have a fun project over the last couple weeks of the year that involve our “mascot” that went missing. Stay tuned… I hope you all have a fantastic week! Today we had our latest round of collaborative study groups, and the students seemed to grasp how to attack their problems much better than last week – we love seeing improvement and progress. I hope you all have a fantastic week! Let me know if you need anything.

Announcements: Hello, and welcome to another week of 6th Grade Math! This week we start Unit 4 as well as take care of the EasyCBM Winter Benchmark test. I have budgeted two days for it. If we finish earlier or later I will adjust the weekly schedule, but for now it is as is prescribed above. Track will be starting in a couple of weeks, and I hope that many of your students come out for it. If your student wants to participate we will have track packets ready to go by the end of the week – I will have some available in class for them. Mr. Miller, Mr. Douma, and I are the track coaches along with Mr. Longoria – who is a teacher at another school in Eugene. Mr. Miller coaches the throwing events, Douma the high jump and hurdles, Longoria the long jump and distance events, and I coach the relay teams and the sprinting events. Students need to have a doctor’s physical completed in order to participate. Doctor’s offices tend to book quickly for physicals, so if you know your student has not had one yet for the upcoming season get it scheduled soon so they can participate right away at track. Physicals are typically good for two years, so if they have one done for track this year, they typically do not need to have another one done until 8th grade.

Announcements: Hello, and welcome to another week of 6th Grade Math! This week we will be starting our new unit on Unit Rates & Percentages. Students will be given new workbooks on Monday. Unit 2 Notebooks were fully graded, and will be returned to students on Monday as well. If students have work they want/need to fix from the last portion that impacts the winter trimester (see Synergy for assignment details), they have until Friday 12/21 to turn those in to receive credit; this includes lessons IM 2.7, IM 2.10, IM 2.12, CPM 4.2.3, and any test corrections on their test that we just completed. I will be giving an optional extra credit assignment over winter break if students choose to do it. My first desire would be for students to enjoy their break, but if doing the extra work would help them it will be provided as an option. This Friday 12/14 is our STEM event with OMSI at Kelly. I hope you all can make it! It is from 5:00-8:00 at Kelly. We will be starting in the Cafeteria for dinner at 5:00, and then OMSI will be here for a Chemical Reactions large-scale demonstration, and the science festival in the Outer Gym. The event is 100% free for those who attend. Your student should be bringing a RSVP flyer home with them early this week from their advisory teacher. If you are planning on coming we just ask that the RSVP section be sent back with an indication of approximately how many from your household will be attending so that we know how much food we need to purchase to accommodate. I hope you all have a fantastic week! Let me know if you need anything.

Student Workbooks: Graded through IM 2.6 HW this last weekend. If students took their notebooks home over the extended weekend to work on material Lesson IM 2.4 HW through IM 2.6 HW were scored as “missing.” Students can turn the missing items in for full credit through Friday 11/30.

Announcements: Hello, and welcome to another week of 6th Grade Math! This week is the last of the fall trimester, and we will be continuing our work on Ratios and their wide application. The work that we do this week will not impact the fall trimester final grade, but will instead be the first assignments that I score for the winter trimester. This will allow students to concentrate on getting their make-up work in for me, and not feel overburdened. Students have until Friday 11/30 to submit any make-up work from the 2nd half of the fall trimester for re-grading if they fix items that are incomplete/missing or do test corrections from either test that we took in the fall. At the end of this week we will be about 2/3 to 3/4 the way done with the unit on Ratios. The 3rd unit is on the further application of rates & percentages. We will start building the workbook as a math department in the coming weeks. On a side note, over the last several months I have been working with OMSI on getting a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics)-related event at Kelly Middle School. I am proud to say that OMSI will be coming to Kelly on Friday 12/14 from 5:00-8:00 PM. This event would not be possible without the assistance of the KMS Title Program – which is led by Ms. Harn. We will be combining the Title Program’s Math & Engineering Night with OMSI to have a fun-filled evening of investigation & STEM-related activities. We have never had OMSI come to Kelly in all of our school’s history, so I am very excited to let you all know about it. The event is free, and dinner will be provided by the Title program. I hope you all are able to make it! More details to come over the coming weeks. I hope you all have a wonderful week! Let me know if you need anything.

Student Workbooks: Graded through IM 2.4 this last weekend.

Announcements: Hello, and welcome to another week of 6th Grade Math! This week is a short one as we continue our work on ratios. We will start to use number lines to describe equivalent ratios. We will be getting a lot done over the three days. The kids seemed to enjoy actually mixing different ratios of colors last week to make varying shades of green rather than simply simulate it on their iPads. The work that we do this week will be the last that I will include on the Fall Trimester grades. Every trimester I use the last week of the term as the first grades of the following trimester. This allows students to really concentrate on getting any and all make up work in before I do final grades for the trimester. I will allow students to turn in make-up work all the way until Friday 11/30. Furthermore, I am planning a proficiency improvement day for students during that last week – probably Wednesday for them to work on improving their scores on assignments they may have lost points on. This has been very beneficial to students in all classes that I have taught and offered it. I updated grades through Lesson 2.4 in our new workbooks. If your student does not have an updated score through IM 2.4, then they did not leave me their workbook when they left for the weekend. I will remind them on Monday that I need the opportunity to grade it. I hope you all have a fantastic week! Let me know if you need anything.

Announcements: Hello, and welcome to another week of 6th grade math! I hope that you had a good weekend. This week we are diving into our next unit on ratios. We started today, and the kids seemed to be getting it pretty well. I was happy with how they did with the volume problem before student-led conferences. I was hoping that they would be able to explain how to solve the problem 2-3 ways, and the kids easily found 10-15 ways to solve the problem in class – it was awesome, and really empowering for them. I will send you all the digital version of the workbook in the next few days. There was a formatting issue with the page numbers when they were printed, and I want to make sure that the digital version has them in case any student forgets their book. I hope you all have a fantastic week! Let me know if you need anything.

Announcements: Hello, and welcome to another week of 6th Grade Math! This week is an odd one as the kids only have three days of school, and I can only be there for Monday & Wednesday. I found out late on Friday that I would be required to be absent on Tuesday. Today I went over in detail with the students about how and why 1st impressions are so important as they will be making a first impression with my guest teacher on Tuesday. It just so happens that the person who is going to be my substitute is someone who was a teacher of mine from high school, and is one of a handful of people who inspired me to become a teacher. I also introduced the concept of “Math Explanations” to the kids today. Math Explanations (in AVID referred to a 3-Pi Explanations) have students find a solution to a question, go over the steps they went through to solve it, and then explain any formulas or strategies that they used or needed to solve it. These explanations have a strong connection to Scientific Explanations where students make Scientific Claims, supported by Evidence, and are explained by Reasoning – things students will learn later on with Kimball. We will spend a day or so next week after mid-Trimester grading reviewing for our mid-unit assessment, and then take it before moving further into Polygons and then area of Trapezoids. I hope you all have a great week! Let me know if you need anything.

Announcements: Hello, and welcome to another week of 6th grade math! This week we will move from talking about parallelograms to triangles. We also have completed the first Collaborative Study Group of the year. As we move forward to do more of these I will add components to them so that the students are getting into even further depth with the content. For the first couple they are essentially showing their group how to complete their problem, and going over any strategies & vocabulary terms that they needed to use or know to get to their solution. As we get more experience with them they will end up doing more and more examples, asking each other great questions to check for understanding, and will manage themselves wonderfully. We will also have a connection with Miller’s AVID class in a couple of weeks so that some of them can help facilitate conversation and work in the groups. I hope you all have a great week! Let me know if you need anything.

Announcements: Hello, and welcome to 6th Grade Math! For most of you, this is your student’s first year having a class with me, but there are a few families that have older children in high school or have already graduated who had my class in middle school. Please expect an email like this nearly every week. I like to let people know what is going on in class so that it can start a conversation about what is going on at school. Sometimes we will go a little faster than the schedule I send, sometimes a little slower – it is 100% dependent on the students, what they need in order to be successful, and how I can support them to get there. I have spent this last week getting to know my students, providing a foundation of expectations (both for them and of myself) so they know how to function in our classroom, and getting started on our first unit. Students were given a copy of the syllabus in class, but I have also attached it to the email in case that works better for you. Please look for these emails (typically) around the weekend for the following week. I might miss one or be a bit late during track season, but I will do my best to make sure they happen with regularity. I hope you all have a fantastic week! Please let me know if you need anything.
