Restructuring of CLCB Classroom postponed for 1 year and Special Education Staffing Changes:

Attached is an email  sent by Cheryl Linder explaining that we will not disband our CLCB program next fall. Also,  we received new information about our staff yesterday:

Jason Robbins will remain at Awbrey Park in our CLCB- 1.0 FTE

Andrew Gaughan will move to Edison at 1.0 FTE, 05. in LC and 0.5 in CLCB

Karrie Davis will be placed in our building at 0.5 FTE to do LC.

Jeremy Boyce will be working 6 hours in our building.

Jill Capenter will be working 4 hours in our building.

Debbie McGowan will be working 6 hours in our building.

I am extremely saddened that both Andrew and Brenda will be leaving us next Fall. Their work is so important in our building and they will be greatly missed.

Field Day Update, Tuesday, June 3rd in the AM/ Reading Train Assembly June 4th PM

– Lisa Chinn will run the Field Day for this year. She said the times work best for K-2 from 8:45-9:30 and grades 3-5 from 9:45-11:30. Lisa will email you regarding volunteers to run the stations.

Also, I switched our Reading Train Music Assembly to Tuesday, June 4th from 12:50-1:40. We will be running the assembly with some mini performances to keep the assembly shorter than 45 minutes.

Awbrey Park School Study Pilot

Suzy Price, the Title 1 and Achievement Gap Focus Administrator will be piloting a school study in our building this Thursday, May 9th.

Purpose of the Study

  • Collect data in search of trends and/or patterns that may be connected to student achievement
  • Explore factors that may influence student performance
  • Look for patterns of instruction, district wide, in relationship to Jon Saphier’s BIG ROCKS of high expertise teaching
  • Guide professional development plans
  • Seek ways to best invest our resources and focus on those areas that will have the greatest impact.
  • Deepen our professional development offerings to enhance instructional strategies, strengthen the “three critical messages” and increase student achievement.

This visit will be our very first of the study. As practitioners, we are learners in the process. We hope to gain insights into the best way to conduct the visits, utilize the tool, gather the data, report the data, etc. all in an effort to move the district forward in increasing student achievement. Part of our process will include reflecting and modifying the process. The format of data collection will likely include a summative report of the visit, a summary of the principal interview and the data collected from the district. We anticipate data being shared with Instruction Cabinet and perhaps the Equity Committee (still not sure….). I would imagine we could share the data with the principal, who could then determine if/when to share with the staff.

Visitation Team: Suzy Price,Raquel Gwynn, Marlee Litten, Kathy Luiten, Juan Cuadros

Date of Visit: May 9

Some items of note for this week:

LEL Network at Awbrey Park on Tuesday

Tuesday we will be hosting the Learning About Learning Network for Elementary (LEL) in our building. Here is a short article in the Harvard Education Magazine that explores the basic concept behind Instructional Rounds.  This particular group is called LEL B. There are more  than 7 networks in 4J. LEL B is composed of 5 teacher leaders, 5 principals, and 3 instruction dept. leaders. We are the last group to be visited this year in this network. The schools in our network include: Buena Vista Dual Immersion, Holt,  River Road Dual Immersion, Charlemagne Fox Hollow, and Awbrey Park.

The LEL B group will be broken into 5 groups. The groups of 3 or 4 will observe classrooms for 15 minute periods between 9:25 and 11:30. The group will be observing classrooms to explore the relationship of students to learning within the instructional core.  Observers will be focused on students in the classroom. LEL data is collected and composed into patterns that emerge amongst the group. Engaging discussions occur after observation and we end the day around 3:00.

I will be making last minute changes to the observation schedule on Monday and checking in with teachers who are on the schedule. Most specifically, I might ask you about your content that we could see during the visit.  I will send a finalized schedule via email on Monday evening.

Using Video in the Classroom  – This is a plug from me about a great application for helping students learn how to create simple videos for class presentations.  My daughter has a project at Edgewood this Spring in 3rd Grade on visiting Eugene landmarks. The teacher has shown students how to use a simple video creation tool called Animoto.  I tried it this weekend and have been helping her collect photos for her project.  Lila made her own video in 10 minutes! This article shows how to use Animoto and other web based video composition tools. It is fun and student centered learning! Check it out.

Maximizing a Student Teacher’s Learning – For those of you with student teachers or will in the future, here is a quick two page list on how to maximize their learning in your classroom.

LaneKids Poster Contest – LaneKids is having a poster contest for kids up to age 12 with prizes around the poster theme “I know my parents love me because…”. Although I question how inclusive that theme is for all students, I did want to share at least about LaneKids, which is a parenting education hub grant-funded through the Oregon Community Foundation. The Lane ESD is a partner and they have a really good web site that’s worth sharing.

Less than 31 days left of school!

Week of April 22nd

Hello Everyone,

I wanted to take a moment to recognize the efforts of Jason Robbins and all of the CLCB staff this year. As you all know, the district has disbanded all CLCB classrooms in favor of mainstreaming these students into classrooms in their neighborhood schools. Jason, Jeremy, Brenda, Jill, and the students have all worked hard to make their new space, room 32 a successful new environment. Their conviction and flexibility to try new strategies and build a positive space to learn has been a gutsy effort by all. It was exciting to see students take ownership of their space and make progress towards improvement in their mainstream classrooms. Thank you Jason, Jeremy, Jill, and Brenda for all of your hard work this year. It does not go unnoticed.

Board members will be available in the back meeting room of the restaurant.

Earth Day, April 22nd – Schools across the country will be celebrating Earth Day on Monday, April 22. Teach your students how to care about their world — and how they can make it better! — throughout the year with these resources and downloads. I know that Awbrey Park has been working hard on this and we should be proud to have become an Oregon Green School this year. Take some time to celebrate our efforts to make Awbrey an eco-friendly learning environment. Thank you Andrew, Debbie, Kristen, Pat, Margie, other cafeteria staff, Larry, and our kids for making so many green “ideas” a reality.

The Common Core and Technology Integration:  Many AP classrooms have been infusing technology into the writing activities since February. Our students are learning many new ways to submit work via Edmodo and are getting very skilled at creating slide presentations and composing documents. The following link describes how the ELA CCSS are actually expecting technology integration at some levels.  It is an interesting article and I believe it lines up well with the skills our classrooms are working on k-5. In May, we will be having a broader discussion of technology in our building at a staff meeting.

Hard to believe there are only seven weeks left in the year!

Week of April 15th

Hi everyone,

I know the next couple of weeks will not be easy for staff as we form our staffing plan for 2013-2014. As we face very difficult cuts to our program, remember to be good to each other.  Our decisions will not be easy. Still, I know I can count on the knowledge, professionalism, and experience of our staff to put forward a plan that best serves Awbrey Park students. Your suggestions and input are very important to this process. Please share your ideas. Clearly, we are in hard times for education and in a tough moment for Awbrey Park,  but I cannot think of a team who I would rather work with as we get though this.

Some items of note for this week:

Staffing Allocations Distributed on Friday – Principals will receive staffing allocations this Friday, April 12th. Staffing plans will be due less than two weeks later on Thursday, April 25th. Once I get our allocations, I will email staff what we received.  Also, we will have a short standup meeting for all staff on Monday morning at 7:45 to give people a chance to ask questions and make suggestions.  Site Council will see my first plans on the 17th of April and I plan on sharing those plans and their feedback with staff at an optional meeting on April 18th at 3:00. The regular staff  meeting will occur on April 23rd and will also include time for input. Please let me know if you have any thoughts or questions around this.

Friday, Planning/Partial Furlough Day – This Friday is a non-student planning day and for certified staff it is also a four hour furlough day. For everyone else, this is a normal work day.

Title 1 April Newsletter – This month’s Title 1 blog post mostly consists of a bundle of Title Coordinator tasks and deadlines, but there are a couple good articles if you’re interested.

McTeacher’s Nite North Region Fundraiser – NERA (North Eugene Retirees Association) is holding their second annual McTeacher’s Nite on April 18, 5:00-8:00 PM at the River Avenue McDonald’s. They are looking for volunteers from each North region school to come and serve as greeters and general supporters. Let me know if you’d be able to volunteer and the approximate times you could be at McDonald’s. I went to their last fundraiser at Carl’s Jr. and really just bought some food and talked to retired teachers and administrators. I also got a chance to see some of my former Madison students.

Classroom resources to celebrate National Poetry Month – In celebration of April as National Poetry Month, Edutopia Editorial Assistant Matt Davis in this blog post suggests several resources for teachers to include poetry in classroom lessons. Among them are poets.org, a sort of “one-stop shop” for poetry, and ReadWriteThink, which includes poetry-focused lesson plans for students in all grade levels.

Planning end of the year events:  The end of the year is quickly coming upon us. This year there will not be a carnival. I am planning a field day with Lisa Chinn, our PE teacher. In addition, CABA (Chinese American Benevolent Association) will be helping us host a Dragon Boat Festival in the last week of school. This will be an early evening event that involves folklore story telling, music, and dance. If you would like to help plan this event or have other ideas please contact me. We will be careful to plan around field trips and celebrations for these events.

Have a Great Week!

Joel

Read To Feed Update— We are doing great! Click here to read Melissa’s email on the Read to Feed Program. We continue to get more sponsors and have more than 1300 dollars in donations so far.

PRIDE Awards– Oh My!-  Thank you so much for pumping up our students last week.  The Pride Award Assembly was especially powerful in many ways. It made me feel very proud of our students and I will admit that I got a little teary eyed too.

Finances for the year- How are we doing?  This year I have tried to be very conservative with supplies and focused on using back stock. I know that can be frustrating at times when you are working on important projects such as the Art Show, but it makes a difference.   With less of a supply budget, we need to be more cautious on what to purchase and sometimes we need to be less customized in paper colors or other variations.

This year our printing budget is less and we are slightly over budget for this stage in the year.  We are doing well in our savings otherwise but please be cautious about how much you are printing. If you are using technology more, then I encourage you to think about how to use less paper in your classroom. All of this effects our bottom line and means more money for technology and savings for field trip scholarships and more important things we value in our building.

Below is a report from Melinda about where we are at in key financial areas:

Supplies are:  All size envelopes, cardboard, postage charge slips, print order forms, laminating film, 20# and 90# paper, railroad board, Delp awards, staff shirts and workroom supplies.

In 2010-11 our supply costs were:  $24,834 (full year)
In 2011-12 our supply costs were:  $19,728 (full year)
In 2012-13 we have spent to date:  $9533  (Through March 15th)

If we keep up with the same spending, we are predicting a $5400 savings from last year supply costs.

Insta Print:  All school print orders (classroom and office needs)

In 2010-11 our Insta Print costs were:  $11, 010 (Full year)
In 2011-12 our Insta Print costs were:  $8,964  (Full year)
In 2012-13 we have spent to date:  $6,133  (Through March 15th)

If we keep up with the same spending, we are predicting going over by $235 ($9199) from last years costs.

Websites for students to share their reading lives – In this article from The Reading Teacher, the authors recommend websites that allow students to share and archive their reading lives, create online reading histories, and place books on digital bookshelves for future reading. I was personally familiar with Good Reads, but they all look like good programs. These could be a fun way to get kids excited about reading and writing about what they’re reading, perhaps in place of reading logs.

Good Reads
Shelfari
Library Thing
BiblioNasium

Restorative Justice Approach to Behavior – This document is pretty concise but is also quite helpful . Imagine you have a student who habitually tilts his chair back and drums annoyingly on his desk with a pencil. This morning, he was doing it – again – while you were trying to teach. What do you do? Read this short article on the punitive vs. responsive teacher reactions to this and similar situations. Teacher and principal behaviors have a huge impact on the trajectory some students of color and students in poverty face. This article has great tips on changing those trajectories.

A New Cultural Activity for Awbrey Park:

Last Wednesday, I attended an Asian Council Meeting and did a little outreach. I am considering adding an evening event that promotes parent involvement and literacy in May.  There is a Chinese tradition in May called the Dragon Boat Festival which we may promote in our building. If you have interest in these programs, please let me know if you would like to get involved. We may even plan an event for Fall called the Harvest Moon Festival or other activities.

Taking It Up Meeting Postponed: I have reset the Taking it UP Meeting for 7:30 AM on April 2nd. I will provide breakfast. The focus of that meeting will be outreach to incoming families.  I would like input on ways to encourage kinder registration and family outreach in the neighborhood community centers of Santa Clara. We will also discuss a parent survey(non-title 1) and how to reach ALL parents. Please come and share ideas.  Our flowers should be up next week! They are pretty cute!

Have a fabulous week, everyone!

Joel

ESY at Awbrey Park this Year – Thought I’d let everyone know that the Extended School Year (ESY) program will be at Awbrey Park this year. We had a one year of rest from this program but this year we will be hosting them again. I will give you more information later this Spring.

Read To Feed Donations- We are now up to $925 thanks to Melissa’s hard work.

TED Talk Presenter, Chimamanda Adichie at UO, April 1st – It’s a few years old, but if you have time, here is a wonderful video on multiple perspectives from TED.com. Novelist Chimamanda Adichie tells the story of how she found her authentic cultural voice — and warns that if we hear only a single story about another person or country, we risk a critical misunderstanding. One reason I share this now is that she will be giving a free lecture at the UO the evening of Monday, April 1st. See the flyer for details.

Have a sunny week!

Here are some items of note for the week:
Visible Thinking Focus at Awbrey Park:  As mentioned in our staff meeting in February, The Harvard Project Zero Website has many valuable thinking routines to try to improve your visible thinking strategies. I encourage you to explore them here. These would be great tools to try out in your collaborative practice time in April, May and June.
Come to meet with me: I’d like to have one on one short conversations about staffing and how your year has been for you.  This meeting is an informal meeting to share your feelings about the year, a face to face conversation about staffing, and give me feedback on any changes that you have noticed this year in our school.  I have set face to face meetings at 3:00 and 7:45 on several days this week. These are tentative. If you have another time you’d like to check in approach me and I will see if I can make that time work! Thanks.
April 1st and 12th PD & Planning Days: It’s hard to believe Spring Break is only three weeks away, but to remind staff how these days will work, here is the schedule for April 1st and April 12th. It’s a regular work day for classified staff, but will be the following for licensed staff. For April 1, the schedule is as follows:3.5 hours — professional development

2.0  hours — individual, contractually guaranteed planning
2.0 hours — budget reduction time
For April 12, the schedule is as follows:4.0 hours — planning time
4.0 hours — budget reduction timeTaking It Up Meeting in March and the Flower Project: I received the last of the photos for the flower project on Friday. I have seen some of the beautiful flowers being created by students in Mrs. Justice class. We are going to have a vibrant display very soon. I have set a Taking It Up Equity Meeting for March 19th at 7:30 AM. If you like to join us all are welcome. Also, I will provide breakfast to anyone who comes. This time we will have cereal and gluten free options available for all who come.OAKS Testing Schedule coming out soon: Melissa and Kristen met on Friday to work on the OAKs schedule. This week expect a schedule to be distributed by Kristen and posted in briefcase by Melinda.

Collaborative schedule being completed this week: Joel, Kristen and Melissa also met to make sure the OAKs schedule does not conflict with our Music and PE schedule. This will be posted via email and briefcase in the next week.

Essay contest on interviewing an older adult: The Legacy Project’s national “Listen to a Life” Contest is inviting students to submit a 300-word essay by March 22nd. The prize is a new computer. It’s for students 8-18, but the rules state the judges will take into account the age of the entrant in evaluating entries.

Sharing our Read to Feed Project: Read2Feed I have inserted the Read To Feed Presentation for you to use with your classrooms. It is posted here as a PDF.  A few days ago Melissa sent it as a Keynote. Reading is already underway for this project and we have received our first contributions as well!

CFEE Taking It Up Graduates: Congrats to Pam Reynolds and Sabrina Gordon for completing the Taking It Up Training.  Thank you for stepping up to help us address issues of racism and inequity in our building.

Highlighting our students in the office project: The Flower project is building up steam! Have you turned in your pictures yet?  I will be printing photos this week at Costco with your help.

Data Meeting Switch due to OAKS Training: Due to OAKS testing we need to get our training in as soon as possible as 5th grade science will start on March 11. Our data meeting will be an OAKS training.
The March 6 data meeting is now going to be 3rd-5th and k-2 will be March 13.
March 6-  3-5th data meeting at 3:00 in room 13
March 13-  K-2 data meeting at 3:00 in room 13

Radios- The New “Bulldog” Channel: In order to improve communication about student safety, I have changed our radio communications system. We now have one main channel to communicate on called the “Bulldog Channel.” This will improve communication for CLC staff to office and increase response time to safety issues and emergencies. One thing to note; Be mindful about how you communicate about students. I encourage you to use first names of students and communicate the most important safety information necessary. Since we will all be sharing the same airwaves, we should be more conservative about radio use on the Bulldog Channel. If you use the radios in the afternoon for 1-2 recess, consider this as well.

John Boita now in Room 27: With the transition of the CLC-B complete to Room 32, I have asked John Boita to use Room 27 and it’s accompanying office. John will be moving to this room this week.

Sharing our Read to Feed Project:Read2Feed I have inserted the Read To Feed Presentation for you to use with your classrooms. It is posted here as a PDF.  A few days ago Melissa sent it as a Keynote.

• Robert Marzano on Four Levels of Classroom Questioning – Here’s an interesting article summary that lines up fairly well with our work with Jon Saphier.

• Smithsonian goes online with activities for students – The Smithsonian Center for Education and Museum Studies has started a program to encourage research, discovery and creative collaboration with project-based learning. Called Smithsonian Quests, the online resource awards digital badges to students upon completion of their activities. The projects are aimed at students of various grade levels, and can be done as part of classroom lessons or independently. It’s a quality  site.
Have a great week, everyone!
