The Great Thanksgiving Listen

                                       The Heartfelt Interview

This interview was taken with my mom, Bidhya in my house, Sunday night, November 28, 2017. One main reason I chose my mom was because I would really like to know how she feel about herself and her family while understanding how her life was before I was around. Even if I didn’t have family of higher generations around, the interview gave me an image of what life was like for my grandparents as she has included stories that they would have remembered too. Our 15 minute heartfelt interview was full of stories from her childhood but mostly her high achievements in life from immigrating into another country with my dad and reaching her long term goals of high education.

This image reminds me of when I was younger and my mom was working on getting her Ph.D. I would see her in the middle of the night studying while I was sleeping. My dad was in the army so he wasn’t home. When I looked over at her desk, I would see books like this. They would have sticky notes marking pages and notes on them. In this interview my mom talks about her success in education and this picture has a good reflection on that.

One of the most enlightening and inspirational part of this interview was when my mom talked about the two people who have had the most influence in her, for her to become who she is.

“I do not have just a single person, I am influenced by two people in my life. First one is my dad. He always used to say your study comes first and you have to study very hard. The rest will take care of it by itself. He also used to tell me that I have to be actively involved in extra curricular activities and learn as much as I can aside of the studies. That helped me a lot to achieve the position I have now. Except that, the other person is my husband, who also has always influenced me, telling that you have to enjoy the work you do and if you do that you’ll achieve more things in your life or you’ll get a satisfaction so don’t hesitated to work hard. Those two people have the most influence in my life.”

Overall I really enjoyed this interview and so did my mom, who enjoyed sharing her experiences. I learned about how her dreams from a young age have become a reality. I didn’t know that her career now is what she wanted from a very young age. This was surprising to me because with myself, I can never pick a career and keep that mindset. Most people my age don’t know either but for my mom it was different. After this interview, I realize that there is a deeper meaning to what my dad says about working hard and my mom explained this to me here from the sample above. I would say the interview went by in a good amount of time.  Each question took a minute or a minute and a half. I think this was a good amount of time. I loved the influence question to really understand my mom’s mindset and who helped her become that way. I really enjoyed this interview to learn more serious topics about my mom and I think what she has told me had a great impact on me.
