Buchenwald

Elie arrived at camp Buchenwald in January 1945. Buchenwald, being one of the largest concentration camps established within the German borders. I would assume it was one of the hardest camps Elie suffered through because thats where he lost his father. The camp was built in 1937 in a forested area on the northern slopes of the Ettersberg. The camp held prisoners from all over Europe and the Soviet Union, such as Jews, Poles, slavs, mentally ill and homosexulas. The insufficient food and poor conditions led to  at least 56,000 deaths at camp Buchenwald. From 1945 to 1950, the camp was used by the Soviet occupation authorities as an internment camp. Today the remains of Buchenwald serve as a memorial and permanent exhibition and museum.
