In 1944 Elie Wiesel and his family where taken to Auschwitz. Auschwitz was called a labor camp but quickly turned into one of the most deadly death camps. Elie was able to stay with his father in Auschwitz and then throughout the transitions to other camps but he was separated from his mother and sisters immediately upon entry to Auschwitz in the first selection. Auschwitz was a complex of 40 death camps, including one of Nazi headquarters. Auschwitz was liberated January 27, 1945. Over 1.1 million people were killed.
