Elie is sent to Gleiwitz after being forced to march for days through the snow. They were kept there for three days without food or water and in horrible conditions. Gleiwitz was in southern Poland and a subcamp of Auschwitz. Founded in 1944, over 100 prisoners died from mistreatment while there. By 1945 when the camp was evacuated, there were 1,336 prisoners. At least five were shot trying to escape.Image result for gleiwitz

Buchenwald

Elie arrived at camp Buchenwald in January 1945. Buchenwald, being one of the largest concentration camps established within the German borders. I would assume it was one of the hardest camps Elie suffered through because thats where he lost his father. The camp was built in 1937 in a forested area on the northern slopes of the Ettersberg. The camp held prisoners from all over Europe and the Soviet Union, such as Jews, Poles, slavs, mentally ill and homosexulas. The insufficient food and poor conditions led to  at least 56,000 deaths at camp Buchenwald. From 1945 to 1950, the camp was used by the Soviet occupation authorities as an internment camp. Today the remains of Buchenwald serve as a memorial and permanent exhibition and museum. In 1944 Elie Wiesel and his family where taken to Auschwitz. Auschwitz was called a labor camp but quickly turned into one of the most deadly death camps. Elie was able to stay with his father in Auschwitz and then throughout the transitions to other camps but he was separated from his mother and sisters immediately upon entry to Auschwitz in the first selection. Auschwitz was a complex of 40 death camps, including one of Nazi headquarters. Auschwitz was liberated January 27, 1945. Over 1.1 million people were killed.
