Elie is sent to Gleiwitz after being forced to march for days through the snow. They were kept there for three days without food or water and in horrible conditions. Gleiwitz was in southern Poland and a subcamp of Auschwitz. Founded in 1944, over 100 prisoners died from mistreatment while there. By 1945 when the camp was evacuated, there were 1,336 prisoners. At least five were shot trying to escape.
