Density Quiz Monday 10.14

Density Song Mr. Edwards

The Density Quiz on Monday October 14th will cover everything we have learned about density and matter so far. The in-class inquiries/labs as well as the homework readings are all covered on the quiz. Here is a list of the topics students should be familiar with or should study. Here is a link to the review sheet!

Definitions to know: Matter (p. 1), Phases of matter (p. 5), mass, weight,(p. 6 & 11) volume (p. 6), density, characteristic property (p. 11)

Properties of phases of matter: solids have a definite shape and volume, liquids have a definite volume but no shape and gas can easily change its shape and volume Reading p. 8-9

Units  1ml=1cm3  Mass=grams Volume = cm3 and ml Density = g/ml or g/cm

Volume  in cm3 of a regular solid = length (cm) x width (cm) x height (cm)

Mass of solids is determined by placing the object on a balance and determining the # of grams

Volume of an irregular solid  using water displacement= (volume of water + object )- volume of water

Mass of a liquid = (mass of liquid  (g) + container (g) – mass of empty container (g)

Volume of a liquid = measurement in ml determined by graduated cylinder (ml)

Mass of air = (mass of bottle + air) – mass of bottle without air

Volume of the air in the bottle = determined by how many ml of water fit in the bottle using graduated cylinder

Density of any substance (g/ml or g/cm3) = Mass(grams) / (divided by) Volume (ml or cm3)

Other Concepts:

  • How can density be used to identify a substance? (p. 10)
  • How did Archimedes convince himself that the king’s crown was not made of pure gold (p. 12)
  • What is the relationship between the density of an object and whether it sinks or floats in a liquid
  • How did you use density to predict where the nylon spacer would end up in your density column (p. 14 & 15)
  • How does a boat (eg: the Titanic) made of steel with a density of almost  8 g/cm3 float in water with a density of around 1 g/cm3?
  • How did Ms. Hohenemser demonstrate that air takes up space?
  • What role did density play in the use of poisonous gas during World War I?
  • What are some of the gases found in air and what are some of their characteristic properties?
