Databases: Select Oregon Countries Population

Students use Google Search with the search terms Oregon Counties, to find the population of the following Oregon Counties: Douglas, Lincoln, Jackson, Lake, Lane, Linn, and Marion. Students need to set up a database in Excel using the category headers “County” and “Population”, add the data, then choose which type of chart they think best shows the data in chart form (column, pie, etc.). Students must show data value by using the “labels” option from their “Toolbox”.

They then copy and paste the chart to an MS Word file (shown in the example). They need to use standard reporting page set-up with a header, title and indented paragraphs with 1.5-2 line spacing. They must write an introductory paragraph, show the data table, and write a summary paragraph that extrapolates and describes at least 2 pieces of data shown in the table.

The finished piece is saved as a MS Word .docx file and a .pdf file – the .pdf file is uploaded to their Tech Lit page on their ePortfolio and displayed in the standard format of naming the assignment (title), giving the assignment description (can be copied from above here), showing the assignment (link to the .pdf file with an accurate link name), and a reflection statement (restate the assignment task (WHAT), tell steps taken to complete the assignment (HOW), and what the student thinks of their effort and work quality (SELF-EVALUATION).

Oregon Counties Populations

Reflection:

We created a chart that shows the population of 7 Oregon populations. How we did it was we went to sheets and created two columns, one said counties the other said population. The counties I did was Douglas, Lincoln, Jackson, Lake, Linn, and Marion. I made a column chart because I thought that it explained and it looked the best for it. We went to Google docs and I created a doc that had two sentences to ay what the chart is and two sentences below the image of the chart to explain some data. I saved the doc as a PDF, put it on my ePortfolio, and here we are! I liked this database but it got kind of boring after the first three.
