Unit Essential Question: Are there planets outside our solar system that could support life? How can we locate them and determine their habitability?

Daily Essential Question: What might other planets in our galaxy be like, and what might life be like on that planet?

Conditions Necessary for Life

  • Quick Write: What are the conditions necessary for supporting life? (alt.: “What does life need in order to survive?”) What characteristics would a planet need to support life?
    • Discussion Group 1. Share your ideas. Number off 1-3.
  • Focus Note Format in SNB
  • Show “Conditions that Support Life:  https://learn.genetics.utah.edu/content/astrobiology/conditions/  (20 min)
    • Student’s take notes in SNB
    • Focus Note Format in SNB
      • Students copy Essential Question into SNB
      • Slide 4 – Allows transport and chemical reactions of materials. Water liquid medium of Earth
      • Slide 5 –  Just right temperature range, Too hot water evaporates, Too cold and it freezes solid, Chemical reactions can’t happen if not liquid;
      • Slide 6 – Atmospheric pressure  necessary to retain water and keep it from boiling away
      • Slide 7 – Speculation of different liquid mediums

  • Discussion Team 1
